Doesn't anybody see the "Glass half full"? What about the 95% of records that are correct and freely available thanks to the efforts of many wonderful volunteers. Sure there will be errors. Even primary sources have errors. Like the minister who put the bride and the groom in the wrong columns. But the overwhelming percentage of data is correct and there for use of researchers. Peter
And don't forget people lied! I have a great aunt, who was illegitimate and made up 3 different fathers on her 3 marriage certificates. But why is it that the incorrect data you find is usually built into your brick wall? ;-) Seriously though, the examples I gave earlier no longer exist, because I reported them to the relevant people and they have corrected them. As I always do with any transcriptions or indexes that I use, and I add alternatives where the transcription is fully accurate, but the original information was mis-recorded. My MAGGS ancestors in the Northeast are recorded as Meggs or Muggs in different censuses and I have added the alternative to make it easier for those few others searching for them. I don't think that we are complaining, more giving a heads up regarding the frailty of data recording.
