Hello This is my first post to this list. Although I have been researching the family history since 1985, this line has always had me stumped. My grandfather was still alive when I started looking into our family and he told me all he could about his grandmother whom he knew as Annie Rice nee Talbot who lived in Gateshead but was known to come from somewhere near Birmingham. I eventually found her birth certificate and she was registered as Ann Eliza Talbot born 6 Feb 1861 in Kingswinford Brierley Hill Staffordshire. i found her on the 1861 census at Forge Row Buildings Kingswinford with her parents Thomas Talbot born Kingswinford and Sarah Sophia Bate(s) born Birmingham and elder sister also called Sarah. No matter how long I have spent looking, I can not find the family in the 1871 census nor can I find a marriage for Thomas Talbot and Sarah Bate. The next time Annie turns up in any record is in the 1881 census when she is living with her father, a widower, in County Durham. Thomas dies in 1888. I can not find any death record for Sarah Sophia Bate orTalbot. Annie's elder sister Sarah Sophia dies in 1865 aged ten. The informant is neither of her parents but a Susannah Bate. I'm hoping someone here can help, not being able to find one record is annoying but not being able to find Annie's parents' marriage certificate nor her mother's death certificate nor the family in 1871 is so frustrating. I found a possible record of Thomas in the 1851 census, the age, place of birth and occupation fits but a search on Ancestry shows that someone else has claimed this Thomas and his parents as their own. I have no proof either way that this Thomas in the 1851 census is mine. Without his marriage certificate I can not go any further back. I have tried different spellings of Talbot but there are no possible marriage. I have not found any baptism records for either Annie or her sister either. Everyone has an elusive family in their tree and this one is certainly mine! E Clarke. Sent from my iPad
It's certainly difficult. But you're missing what might be vital clues like ages and birthplaces of Thomas and Sarah and their first daughter Sarah. From census data, Thomas was born c1831 in Kingswinford and Sarah c1832 in Birmingham. Daughter Sarah was born c1855 in Kingswinford. So I'd expect any marriage between 1848 - 1856 possibly in the bride's parish. I can find nothing, so perhaps they didn't marry. It would be worthwhile finding them both in 1841 and 1851 census. Did Sarah move from Birmingham? Who is Susannah Bate? Is this a sister or sister in law of Sarah? Could it even be an alias of Sarah? I think you should be able to find some possibilities for their births in Family Search and then verify that using 1841 and 1851 census data. I'd also suggest trying Find My Past for 1871 census in case of error on Ancestry. As for somebody claiming one or the other in an Ancestry tree, they could have had the same problems as you. It doesn't make them right. Peter
There are possibilities for the births of Thomas and Sarah. Thomas was an iron roller or Iron puddler and on the 1851 census there is a 19 year old Thomas living with a brother and his parents in Kingswinford who is an iron roller( he states he is 29 on the 1861 census) so I was fairly certain this was my man but someone else has this family attached to their tree in Ancestry with a completely different wife and children. As I'm not able to prove he's mine I can go no further. I haven't tried find my past yet, however when I started to look for him it was well before Ancestry. Co.uk. Remember those micro films we used? I couldn't even find him trawling through those. I joined Talbotania which is a one name society for Talbot family research but no one there could help. I thought Sarah may have been a widow when she married Thomas but still no luck using just her first name. No baptisms for Annie or her sister could also suggest no marriage for the parents. Every now and then I look for possibilities for Susannah Bate in census records. A grandmother, a maternal aunt? Nothing jumps out!
