Hello Lilian, The only earlier census record I can find in Shropshire or Staffordshire with a father Thomas and sons William, John & George all together is this 1841 census in Shrewsbury, Shropshire: HO107/927/10, folio 10, page 12 St Michael's Street, Shrewsbury Thomas HUMPHREYS 35 Works at Factory Ann do 30 Thomas do 13 William do 11 John do 9 James do 7 Richard do 3 George do 6 months All born in the county except Ann. The ages are slightly out but then the ages of your George, William & John do seem to vary in the latter census records. However, I then seem to lose this family in subsequent census records until your William, John and George, who may be the children, turn up in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. William's birthplace also varies: in the 1861 of Hanley, it is shown as either the parish of Tedingham or Ledingham, Shropshire neither of which I can find and in the 1881 census it looks like Bronington V, Salop. I have found a Bronington, Salop on my atlas which is shown as about 7 miles SW of Whitchurch on the A495, so Whitchurch or nearby does seem to be relevant to William & John at least. Whitchurch also includes a hamlet of Dodington, so I wonder if perhaps the enumerator misheard William's place of birth in the 1861 census. I have found a George HUMPHREYS born c1836 in the 1861 census of Sheffield, Yorkshire (RG9/3489, folio 7, page 9) who is unmarried, a Draper's Assistant, born Sandford Shropshire (which is near Whitchurch) who could perhaps be your George. Not too sure that this helps much, except to reinforce Whitchurch as a possible starting point in your quest for the birthplaces of your family. He was born in Shropshire c1840 - He is recorded on 1871 census living with his brother William and family at 21 Swan Street, Stoke on Trent and his brother John and his family are recorded as living Alcocks Court, Bagnall Square, Hanley, George died 1875 at Cottage Square, Tinkersclough, Shelton Stoke on Trent AGED 35yrs and the informant was his sister in law Ellen (john's widow as John died in 1873.) His father was Thomas - This is recorded on William and John's Marriage Certificates.

Remember the ages 9n 1841 census were not exact but rounded for all above the age of 15 I think. Mind you, some "real" ages were in there, as the census taker ignored or maybe did not understand or explain well enough to the families.. so, 34 became 30 as an age, 35 was right, 36 came 35 and so on. Round down to the nearest five years, was the rule. I don't think they knew then much about birth control and probably the man would not care either! Sort of gap there from the regular reproduction otherwise.
