Hello, I am trying to work on a reasonably unusual surname in a fairly localised area. I have found many marriages where no baptismal record appears to exist for adults with this surname. From the names of their subsequent children there appears to be a strong link with known families in the area. Has anyone come across families where some baptisms are recorded and others not? If you had lots of children would you baptise them all or miss a few? As far as I can tell all the local potential venues for baptism either have their records on line or can be seen at the Records Office and I have looked as thoroughly as I can. The time period that I am looking at is primarily 1700 to 1780. Clues or advice would be gratefully received. Helen
Helen If you give us a clue as to SURNAME and AREA we will no doubt look for you .... Hello, It's Bould or sometimes Bold and I'm particularly interested in Matthew Bould who married Mary Mellor in Ipstones in 1792 but I can't find a baptism for him in the area at all. Any help would be much appreciated. Hi again Helen, there are quite a few BOLDs and BOULDs in the Lichfield Record Office probate index: http://www.staffsnameindexes.org.uk/StartPage.aspx?Mode=Details&Index=C. This only goes up to 1750 (though that's a recent extension of 20 years!) but there's a Thomas BOULD of Ipstones there, probate date 1734 which might mean the family were there a generation or two further back - and you might find later Wills for them at Lichfield too, if you enquire. If you're lucky, one of these Wills might name your Matthew and tell you his parentage. Hi Helen, when this sort of thing happens in the lines I'm chasing, it often means the families were non-conformists - have you tried looking among the various dissenter records in your locations of interest?
