Is there anyone who can help here? Are any American censuses searchable online? I think I have found a distant cousin arriving at Ellis Island in 1892, can anyone recommend ways of tracing the rest of his life in America? TIA Fay, in a damp and drizzling Queensland

Hi Fay Greetings from Torrance, Ca. I have access to ancestry.com for the US and would be glad to search the US records for her. Just post name, state, approximate age and anything else that might help me pinpoint. There was a census taken every 10 years and is available on-line thru the 1930 census. The 1940 census will be available to search in April of this year. The 1890 census did burn but the others are available. Thank you Jan and Ruth, for solving this problem, now I need to try and establish if William was the father of the children. Ruth you are correct Charlottes surname is Locken - I was busy trying to work out tally, I didn't read it properly. According to the Oxford English Dictionary: *b.* to live (on) tally , to live in concubinage, to cohabit without marriage. *slang*.But I rather prefer the preceding definition! *a.* Each of the two corresponding halves or parts of anything; a thing, or part, that exactly fits or agrees with another thing or corresponding part; a counterpart; *fig.* an agreement, correspondence.By the way, I think Charlotte's surname could be Locker. However I have used a family search baptism record dated 7 Apr 1786 Lichfield as his birth record so that would make him 29. Also the 1861 census indicates a birth year of 1786 for John and a birth year of 1792 for Ann making her 23 at marriage. I plan to look at the actual records someday but I don't have easy access. Does it make sense for a 29 year old and a 23 year old to have parent consent? Thanks John Bruin Albuquerque New Mexico Sent from my iPhone >>

The Copestake surname is spelt Copestick also. Jan -----Original Message----- From: Jan Rockett Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2012 9:34 AM To: STAFFORDSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [STAFFORDSHIRE] marriage cert Colclough/Thornton nee Copestake I have found a marriage certificate in the deeds for my mums house. It is a copy done for solicitors and the purchase and sale of the property many years ago. It is between William Colclough aged 34 of Norton in the Moors and Gertrude Julia Thornton, nee Copestake, Widow, aged 48. This took place at Christ Church Cobridge in 1945. I cannot let you have the document as it may be needed in the future by solicitors but I don't mind scanning/copying it if anyone is following this couple or their families. Dawn, There are thousands of sites depending on the type of information you want, the location and the timeframe. There are separate sites for parish and civil BMD records pre and post 1837. Then there are different sites for census, newspapers, directories, maps, archives, court records, probate etc etc. Some are at national level, some county and some localised. While Ancestry and Find My Past have large collections, they don't have everything. A good site for seeing what's available in UK is Genuki. I teach people to Google what they want. It often brings up a lot of unexpected possibilities. So Google Genuki, UK BMD, UK Newspaper Archives, Staffordshire Burials etc and see what turns up. Peter
Sites which are particularly good for Staffordshire research also include: Staffordshire Name Indexes (Staffordshire & Stoke on Trent Archive Service) http://www.staffsnameindexes.org.uk/StartPage.aspx Wolverhampton Parish Register Transcripts (available as PDFs for Wolverhampton area) http://www.wolverhamptonhistory.org.uk/resources/indexes FreeREG (which currently has over 900,000 Staffordshire baptisms, marriage and burials - new transcription volunteers welcome!) http://www.freereg.org.uk/ See this page for current Staffordshire coverage: http://www.freereg.org.uk/parishes/sts/a.shtml#1 On 9 March 2012 21:27, dawn ullmann <dullmannfamily@yahoo.com> wrote: > Any recommendations for sites other than Ancestry.com?? > Thanks- > Dawn >

Depends where you are researching. Find My Past for England is I think better than Ancestry. I have subbed for some years now - just got Ancestry almost right on Christmas. The free ones, freebmd etc, are good too. HI, I subscribe to both ancestry and findmypast and have done for some time. The indexing on fmp is far superior to ancestry but each have databases which the other does not. Transcription errors on fmp are usually corrected within a few days whereas ancestry takes weeks if at all. For BMD and census data findmy past is my first choice NUala On 09/03/2012 22:34, Mike in Droitwich wrote: > Hi Dawn > > What sort of thing are you looking for and what time period ? > Seeing another reply, for my research in England Ancestry is better than > Findmypast. > > Mike Fisher in Droitwich >
This site probably has the most comprehensive list of genealogical websites available ................ http://www.cyndislist.com/ "Cyndi's List has been a trusted genealogy research site for more than 15 years. Cyndi's List is free for everyone to use and it is meant to be your starting point when researching online. * What exactly is Cyndi's List? * A categorized & cross-referenced index to genealogical resources on the Internet. * A list of links that point you to genealogical research sites online. * A free jumping-off point for you to use in your online research. * A "card catalog" to the genealogical collection in the immense library that is the Internet. * Your genealogical research portal onto the Internet."
