    3. Hi Bill, I have been looking for the death of John James born 1836 even though his age varies on different census. In the 1901 census he is at Tipton Staffordshire. aged 55 even though he should have been 65. Looking at the BDM for Staffordshire. He doesn't seem to be there. I did look at West Midlands but Tipton seems to only go up to 1894. Is that right? Would Tipton be under the Dudley area if I was looking for his death. His wife Sarah James I think died 1906 at Dudley I got this info off Ancestry Because of the common name John James I thought I might be better going through the Council rather than GRO as they supposedly do a 5 year search. Is that right? Many thanks for your advice Cheers Marilyn from Western Australia At 06:28 PM 20/04/2012, you wrote: >Hi All > >The Staffs BMD has been updated with the following records .... > >Births: > >1,500 for Stone, registers at Newcastle-Under-Lyme (1883-1888) > >4,219 for Tutbury, registers at East Staffordshire (1935-1975) > >regards > >Bill > >======================================================================== >The Staffordshire BMD can be found at http://www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk >and the West Midlands BMD at http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk > > >****************************** >ATTENTION TO ALL:- When replying please remove the details that do not >apply to your mail and change the SUBJECT LINE for best useage of ARCHIVED >MATERIALS. >------------------------------- > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >STAFFORDSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the >quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. John, It's still there, of sorts. When you go to the new site, down the bottom to the left of the world map, click on British Isles collection and follow the prompts to census 1881. You still get the transcription for free, but the format is different. When you get your search results, you need to click on the name in blue above the camera icon. That will open up the transcription. To get individual relationships, occupations and birthplaces you need to click on each person. I agree it's not as good as it was, but it's still there. And what they tried to do was link though the indexes to sources and images of original data. The idea is laudable, but not sure if it's a success. I can still do what I used to do. It's just a case of learning a few new tricks. Peter

Hi Andy, Great I now think, thanks to Althea, that Diana was the child of John James 2nd marriage to Sara Tomlinson. Althea pointed out what I missed that Diana in the 1891 census says she was a sister of William Tomlinson whose house they were staying at in Derby. I did find a marriage of a Diana James to Frederick Bate in 1900 at Runcorn Cheshire the rest of the marriages were in Wales but as yet haven't found them on the 1901 census Many thanks for all your help. 3. Hi Andy, Tried that on exact but no Dinah or Diana comes up being born at Langley Mill Derbyshire drat Just tells me there is none. Looks like Dinah probably had another name just to confuse me I did find a birth for Diana James 1873 at Basford which apparently is between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. No Dinah that struck a chord though Is Basford near Langley Mill at all? She uses Diana in the 1891 census at Derby while with her stepmother Sarah Many thanks for your input. 3. It seems we have lost the longstanding free transcription of the UK 1881 Census on Family Search where you could see the entire household details in full (with the option of previous and next households). If you go to their old home page it will now redirect you to their new version, unless you click on the link to the old version. However when you elect to go to the old website page and search for the census it takes you to their new census page: which only results in minimal detail of the individual and prospective links to the other individuals in the household. Not bad I suppose for free but not as useable, in my opinion, as the old way. Unless you go down the pay per view route to see the original via a link. I have found a free index search on Ancestry to this specific census but again you have to pay to see the original. The long-standing Family Search old version was a good tool which looks to be no longer available - unless anyone know differently?

I can't seem to find her after that though. Her stepmother Sarah was only visiting as in the 1901 census she is back at Tipton with her husband John James Many thanks for your help Cheers Marilyn from Western Australia
