Thank you Graham for the reply. Yes I have since found out from Joan, that I am different branch. Of course, we could very well intertwine somewhere. Appreciate your replay. A big thank you to Bill, Dawn, Laurie and Diana for looking at this for me. I've now reported - again - to Find My Past that the page is faulty, adding that two of my correspondents agree with me. Now I know he's there on Ancestry, I've tried searching for William PAINTON, and lo and behold, there he is, described as a "sugar maker" (should be "saggar maker" - but I'll accept "sagar" from someone who wouldn't know what a saggar was). This is my tenuous connexion to the 'Titanic' - that some of my family travelled with the same captain earlier in the century. Diana - William and Emma's parents were another William, and Edna née Cartwright, so I think your family must be a different one. Graham, I have a question on your William Pointon b. about 1877 & his sister Emma b. about 1876. I could be wrong on their dates of births also. I have a brother & sister along with 6 other siblings belonging to Aaron Pointon & Rebekkah Simcock. Aaron b, 1850 Tamelly, South Wales Rebekkah Simcock b. 1847 Staffordshire Married 18 Aug, 1822 Norton in the Moors, Staffordshire. My grt-grt-grt grandmother was Matilday Plant married to John Simcock. they were my William & Emma & others, grandparents. Do you know if this is possibly the same brother & sister I have? Diana > >
I'm trying to find William POINTON (born 1876) travelling to the US in 1901-1910. His father, also William, went in May 1902, on the 'Majestic', captained by Edward Smith, and according to the Ellis Island Arrivals site, William junior arrived on 10 January 1903 on the 'Germanic', also captained by Edward Smith, travelling with his sister Emma, and her husband Tom WHITE. But Find My Past has no William POINTON on that sailing, and the relevant page of the manifest looks like a piece of hessian cloth, and so is illegible, although Find My Past tells me there's nothing wrong with it. Tom and Emma White are shown as being on the ship on that date (it left Liverpool on 31 December 1902). Can someone else who has a subscription to Find My Past have a look, please, in case it's my computer that's at fault? If he's there, what is the spelling? Thanks in advance, Graham
Laurie, My grandfather was a ships' carpenter, he signed on and that was in 1910. Got here to Australia. He told me by the time they had been at sea a few days the meat had maggots in it. I said, what did you do? He said, we ate it, there was nothing else. Maybe picked out the maggots first one hopes? He built a house here and when it was finished sent for grandma. My mother was born 9 months after she landed in Brisbane. Guess the second thing he took off was his hat? Robyn Shaw. Graham on Ancestry it clear and the spelling is as you have it, but the "t" is not crossed so could be confused as a "b" or maybe an "l". Hope this helps. Kemal Ataturk:- "Those heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives, you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Tommies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side in this country of ours. You, the mothers who sent your sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears, your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they become our sons as well." Inscribed on the Gallipoli Memorial put up by Turkey in 1934, also on the Ataturk Memorial at Tarakina Bay, Wellington. http://www.allaboutturkey.com/gelibolu.htm Winston Churchill:- "In War: Resolution. In Defeat: Defiance. In Victory: Magnanimity. In Peace: Goodwill. " The Gallipoli campaign was thought up by Churchill as a lightning strike, to catch the Turks by surprise. Whistle up the Dardanelles to Istanbul, and so open a second front to relieve pressure on the Flanders battlefields. By the time the Military had developed the plan, and spent six months preparing for it, there was little surprise... It was nevertheless a touch-&-go affair, which very nearly succeeded. Had it not been, literally, for Ataturk and a handful of men who stopped the advance at dusk. The generals then decided to leave it till the next day, by which time....

I always watch the Anzac Day march - TV only - and spend much of the three hours or so of the TV coverage, weeping. Rain and horrible weather this year - they were prepared for far smaller crowds they said - but, the more it rained, the ore the people came. Not just Australian troups march either - allies too, and some of the "enemy" are now welcomed and march at the end of the Australian contingent. Radio coverage at least started very early, about 5am I think, with the dawn servicea t the shrine. Melbourne, this all is - but it happens all over Australia and you get your state march televised. Country towns do the same but on a much smaller scale of course.. A minute's silence at the football this afternoon - at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), traditionally - and to hear such a crowd totally silent is awe inspiring they say. It is the only time it happens.
