Does anyone know if the gravestones in the churchyard in Norton in the Moors have been transcribed. I have looked though the MIs on sale through the BMHGS and cannot find any evidence. I am looking for any Unwins buried there. Thanks. Barbara in St Albans, UK
It is usually about 80 pence per copy, but you will be able to buy a digital camera voucher, for the day which will cost about £5-ish, but take as many photos as you like! If you Google Coal Mines Staffordshire you get a variety of hits and maps showing various locations. It should be just a matter of looking at those close to Caverswall. Peter
I am trying to establish where two, twenty year old Coal miners may have worked in 1842. They lived in adjoining properties on "The Square" in the centre of Caverswall and presumably did not have to travel to far by foot to get to and from the mine each day. Any thoughts or comments gratefully received. Sunny Queensland
The most likely places would have been either Cinderhill Colliery or the adjoining Park Hall Colliery. The two collieries were very close together. and were located near to Cinderhill Hall on Sutherland Road lying just below Weston Sprink Between Normacot and Weston Coyney. I used to be the Colliery Surveyor for Park Hall. John Roberts In The Staffordshire Potteries Where The Mugs Come From
You would be surprised at how far out ancestors would walk to work or anywhere else, they would think nothing of walking 20 miles a day. May be your ancestors did work in a local pit, but you may need to broaden your search, happy hunting from Linda.

Hello John, You may have a real problem here. Going by your information I find, Births Sep 1859 FREETH Sarah Hannah Kings. N 6c 400 Marriage to Mar 1880 Collins Walter Harry King's Norton 6c 557 Death of Walter aged only 48 Deaths Mar 1905 Collins Walter Harry aged 48 King's N. 6c 295 However, checking the census returns.. 1881 census Pigot Street Birmingham Walter COLLINS aged 26 Brush Maker employing 4 boys 6 girls born Birmingham Sarah aged 24 born West Bromich, Staffs Walter aged 3 born Birmingham Henry aged 4 mths born Birmingham 1891 census Loc? Bank Road Edgbaston Walter Collins 36 Brush Manufacturer Sarah J Collins 34 Walter Collins 13 Harry Collins 10 Annie Collins 9 Ernest Collins 7 Florence I Collins 5 Jennie Collins 4 all children born Birmingham 1901 census Lew Cresent, Edgbaston Walter Collins 46 Jane Collins 44 Walter Collins 23 Harry Collins 20 Annie Collins 19 Ernest Collins 17 Florence Collins 15 Jennie Collins 14 Mary Collins 8 Gertrude Collins 6 George Collins 3 all children born Birmingham 1911 census Summer Road, Edgbaston Walter Collins 56 Sarah Jane Collins 54 Henry Collins 30 Ernest Collins 27 Ethel May Collins 18 Gertrude Edith Collins 16 George Sidney Collins 13 So that means that Walter is still alive. Therefore the closest deaths recorded are Deaths Sep 1924 Collins Walter 68 Stratford 6d 659 Deaths Dec 1924 Collins Walter 70 Birmingham S. 6d 105 Deaths Mar 1948 Collins Walter 92 Birmingham 9c 88 Closest match for Sarah's death Deaths Mar 1921 Collins Sarah J 64 King's N. 6d 117 Others could be Deaths Sep 1935 Collins Sarah J 76 Warwick & Leamington 6d 749 Deaths Dec 1938 COLLINS Sarah J 84 Birmingham 6d 93 Now I could be way off base here as you wrote Gollins. Was that a spelling error or correct? Can't find any record of this surname. The district Kings N. is an alternative name for Kings Norton and it spans the boundaries of the counties of Staffordshire and Warwickshire. John - You know that Sarah Hannah / Amy was alive in 1901. Freebmd allows you to put in a start date for the search without specifying an end date, so with a start date of April-June 1901, and no end date, all the records from then on will be searched. You can also specify the county in order to cut down the possible number of hits. If you know her birth date, then you can eliminate any hits that show the wrong age (allowing for possible small discrepancies, whether deliberate or accidental). I would specify the county rather than the registration district, because it covers a greater area, and will allow for her having moved her home by a relatively short distance. Hope this helps, Graham On 02/08/2012 03:33, John Maddocks wrote: > Hello All > II am having some difficulty in understanding Free B M D ,my problem is that I am trying to find a death date without knowing the death period ie we are searching for the death of Sarah Hannah or Amy Collins nee Frith mwe know that she was living in 1901 and possibly alive on the occasion of the marriage of one of daughters on April 25th 1918 the wedding took place in the county of Birmingham ,district Kings Norton .her husband Walter Harry Gollins was listed as deceased on the wedding cert, but of course there is no mention of state of the Brides mother ,however the daughter ,s birth was registeredin the county of Stafford ,distric of Harbourne?,we are not sure where Kings Norton is . > Can we we do a blanket search for a stated term ? any help would be much appreciated . > John Maddocks New Zealand > ****************************** > ATTENTION TO ALL:- When replying please remove the details that do not apply to your mail and change the SUBJECT LINE for best useage of ARCHIVED MATERIALS. > ****************************** > PLEASE keep your Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software up to date.
