Hi ... I am in Canada and the item being used here is a FLIP-PAL ... better than a wand as you don't need to drag anything over the document. As for using a digital camera, I find that a good one works without any problem. Most new ones will have enough megapixels to do well, some have a document setting. I also use my camera to take shots from the microfilm reader or computer. Hi everyone, Re recent postings re Ann Baker, many thanks for suggestions regarding the above from Linda and Peter also others who wrote privately to me already thanked.. With regards to Linda's suggestion, no, I hadn't thought about non conformist baptisms. I didn't think there were any in Penkridge because the Methodist Church was not built until I was three years old. I can just remember it being built. Before that time I have always understood that everyone except Catholics were baptised at St. Michael and All Angels Church. Also at that time except for the Infants School all schools were Church of England endowed by Lord Hatherton. I agree with you Peter that Ann was illegitimate, and I have also presumed that one of her Grandparents children was her parent but I have been unable to confirm this. Just for information there was at that time no RC Church at Penkridge either, the nearest one being at Brewood. Thanks again. Margaret Felthouse.
Have you looked for any Wills relating to your BAKER family, Margaret? These are held at Lichfield Record Office. Wills have often proved very useful in my own researches, and you never know, even the most humble of folk made Wills! I believe there were non-conformists chapels in and around Cannock at that time. I believe these records might actually be held at Cannock Library! Also look for other records such as Parish Law records. Stafford do have indices indicating what records they hold for each Staffordshire parish - I believe you can also search for these using SRO's online database - but am not 100% certain. You have probably already got these but I have extracted some of the BAKER details from the St Michael, Penkridge parish register for you, which I thought may be relevant: Bapt: 19th Sept 1823 James son of Robert and Mary BAKER. Labourer and again on the 12 Oct 1823! 23 Jan 1825 Anne dau of Andrew and Elizabeth BAKER. Labourer. Marriage: 25 August 1793 Robert BAKER husbandman & Ann WALLOMS, spinster. Margaret, It has, to me, all the symptoms of an illegitimate birth. Have you looked at all the children of Robert & Mary Baker who could have mothered / fathered a child around 1830. Just a thought. Peter
Hi All, Thank you Sylvia for your posting re the above who was my Great Grandmother. It was about six months ago I posted yet another message on the list and think I said it was my last attempt at finding her birth (baptism). According to Census returns she would have been born c 1830 and her birthplace is given as Pillaton, Penkridge. In 1841 she was living with whom I presume were her Grandparents Robert and Mary Baker at Pillaton and 1851 in service and then after her marriage to ROBERT OWEN she says (or Robert says) that she was born in Gnosall. She was married at Penkridge on 7th June 1855. There was no father's name on the marriage certificate. She lived with Robert at The Whittimores, Penkridge and later at Boz Green and then The Gate Lodge at Teddesley Hall, Penkridge. Robert was Gamekeeper on Lord Hatherton's estate. Ann died on 17th August 1907 and is buried at Penkridge. I looked at the P.R's for Penkridge yet again when I was at the record office last week but unfortunately I didn't have time to look at the Gnosall ones but in the past have searched them at least two times. The Baker family lived in several areas of Staffordshire and as well as places mentioned Eccleshall, and Bradley. Of course she could have been born anywhere. There is an Ann Baker born in Penkridge but her family is as far as I know not related to me. I have over the years read nearly all the Staffordshire records as my family are widely spread throughout most of the county except for the Potteries. Any suggestions as to where to search next would be very much appreciated . Regards, Margaret Felthouse nee Bennett.
I suppose you have checked the Non Conformist Registers Margaret? Are you sure she was baptised as a Baker, not some other name? Linda.
Is anyone researching the WAKELIN family from Uttoxeter and later from Panton St in Westminster? This is the family of silversmiths that later became Wakelin & Gerrard? I am trying to find fellow researchers
Hi Margaret, Thanks for the information. Access like Fort Knox will probably not be as much hassle as the form filling required by Northumberland records to get copies, which is, just a bit, OTT. So far I have been to Northumberland, Durham, Essex, Cornwall, together with a couple of family history societies and they all have different requirements and systems for getting copies. Hence I always ask first. Cheers Steve On 06/08/2012 09:45, margaret felthouse wrote: > Hi All, > > Regarding postings re visits to the SRO. Hello Margaret Can you give any more details of your great grandmother to help others to search on your behalf? Hi, http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp - the 1834 W White directory (page 731) shows a John Burgess at Caverswall and a John Heath at Cookshill, both being farmers. hth, Anne > Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2012 10:46:00 +1000 > From: norm.simcock@gmail.com > To: staffordshire@rootsweb.com > Subject: [STAFFORDSHIRE] Caverswall Parish John HEATH and John BURGESS c1842 > > Is anyone researching these families? Norm, Even if it was a youthful prank, it's far more serious than stealing a handkerchief or loaf of bread. And they were found guilty. My ggg grandfather was transported with 17 others for being in a pub when a forged note was found. Logic says not everyone was involved. Most couldn't read or write. Such was British justice. The www.FindMyPast.co.uk site offers limited census searching before you have to pay. You should be able to find both the men you are after. I'd also check your local libraries and FHS centres. Many offer free access to Ancestry and Find My Past. Members of SAG will also find it there. State Libraries also have it. Peter
Is anyone researching these families? In particular I am looking for their address say from the 1841 census. My erstwhile Great Grandfather, then 20 years old, together with his neighbour, each "nicked" a horse on Monday the 2nd August 1842 from the gentlemen quoted above. I am *trying* to tell myself they were nobbled and transported as a result of a youthful prank rather than an insidious crime The address of the owners of the horses would help in my efforts to put leaves on the timber of my tree. any and all comments gratefully received. from beautifully sunny Queensland
Many thanks Margaret for your post on visiting Staffordshire RO. I was there in February briefly and did feel slightly like a criminal being checked over. Once signed in, staff very helpful. My day ended with an expensive parking ticket (nothing to do with the record office) after getting carried away at the William Salt Library. Does anyone have tips for taking good photos of documents - how far away from the page, lighting etc - or recommend a good article on it? I'm thinking of buying a new camera soon - can't decide what to go for. Needs to be fairly simple to operate but adequate for what's needed for documents. Nickie
Hi All, Regarding postings re visits to the SRO. I am over in the UK from Australia at present having a short visit to friends in Staffordshire (my home County). I was fortunate to be able to have a day at the Staffordshire Record Office last Friday. Incidentally it is like getting into Fort Knox since my last visit in 2000. It was possibly more complicated for me being an ex pat, but you do need means of identification , photograph and address and also a utilities bill. Obviously I didn't have the latter but passport, drivers licence and pension card sufficed. When I asked about printing I was told that for the sum of 6.50 pounds I could photograph everything I needed to copy. I did photograph documents, microfilm and microfiche and they all came out well. No flash by the way but OK if you read the documents near the windows. Unfortunately I didn't find the baptism of my biggest brick wall my Great Grandmother Anne Baker who over the past 23 years I have mentioned on the list from time to time. No bags allowed of course so everything you need has to go into pockets. Happy and successful hunting Steve on your visit this week. Regards to all, Margaret Felthouse nee Bennett.

In answer to a question that wasn't asked ;-) You just might find something of interest on one of these WebSites:- www.gravestonephotos.com www.findagrave.com www.spanglefish.com/okefordfitzpaine www.tammymitchell.com www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=43 www.canadianheadstones.com www.oddquine.co.uk etc., etc., etc. If your own churchyard isn't listed, why not pop down there, photograph the gravestones, and send them off to that first Link ? If everyone did that....
Many thanks to Barbara Gray and Denise for their very prompt replies. I bought the Norton microfiche some time ago, but want to find out if a gravestone might give me more information about where Joseph Unwin lived. He was a 75 year old farmer according to the 1841 census and died 18 May 1844. Barbara > > Does anyone know if the gravestones in the churchyard in Norton in > > the Moors have been transcribed.
