    3. Hi Keith, They may have arrived in Canada through Quebec or Halifax, Nova Scotia. This link has images of passenger lists so you have to browse through images instead of an easy search. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/index-e.html Hope this helps, Jane Herring Cove, NS -----Original Message----- From: Keith & Merle Hackney Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2012 1:00 AM To: staffordshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [STAFFORDSHIRE] richard thomas ellis (1884 - 1916) Hi, would any of our Canadian listers be able to identify an address from the 1916 census entry details please? Township: 24 Province: Alberta District: 34 Calgary East (possibly Forest Lawn) Sub district: 04 Enumeration District: 24 Family number: 99 Page:8 Names: R T Ellis, Mabel Ellis, Thomas Ellis. The information also states that Richard immigrated in 1911, his wife Mabel in 1912. I am trying to find their marriage, as they were both single in the UK 1911 census. I cannot find it in the FREEBMD indices either, so I don't know whether they married in Alberta or Staffs. Their only child was 2 in the 1916 census. Richard was KIA in September 1916. I would appreciate an indication as to where I can look up their immigration details, they don't appear to be on the Ellis Island site. They would probably have left England from Liverpool. Thanks very much, Keith NZ ****************************** ATTENTION TO ALL:- When replying please remove the details that do not apply to your mail and change the SUBJECT LINE for best useage of ARCHIVED MATERIALS. ****************************** PLEASE keep your Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software up to date. 3. Hi Peter, Many thanks for your quick replies!! I knew he wouldn't be in 1881, but looked for his parents, and found the Richard/Emma/Mary family. I had been looking for Emily, as I obtained Etnily from R T's Commemoration Certificate from the CWGC website, and did have a doubt about it. I have now found the family in 1911, with Emma as a widow. However I can't seem to find any of the family in 1901. Staffordshire is correct, as I knew they were from there. Thanks also for the marriage details. I hope now that one of our Canadian listers might be able to help with the Canada side of things. Once again, many thanks, much appreciated. Kind regards, Keith

    3. Hi. The above was the husband of my grandmother's sister, Mabel Hall, and they emigrated to Alberta, Canada. Richard was the son of Richard and Etnily ( yes, that's her stated name) Ellis, of Hanley. I have found the family in the 1916 census of Canada, which states that Richard immigrated in 1911, and Mabel in 1912. Their son Thomas was 2 in the census, and was born in Alberta. Richard was 32 and Mabel 28. They lived in Forest Lawn. I have been unable to find any information about Richard's parents, or his marriage to Mabel. I cannot find the parents in the UK 1881 census. What I have discovered on the CWGC website is that Richard was killed in France on 16 September 1916, age 32. As he was home for the census on 1 June that year, his military career was sadly very short. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Keith in NZ.

    3. Huge recommendation from me as well. I have this book and it is a great resource and a labour of love. It's also why I know about the history of Sparrow Lee Farm, how Ralph Whielden whose mother inherited Sparrow Lee in 1779, mortgaged the farm to Samuel Hudson and defaulted on his payments so that Samuel took over the farm for his son, also called Samuel, for him to live there after 1808. Ralph had various properties including a newly built farm at Calton Moor and doesn't appear to have lived at Sparrow Lee. The missing link is who tenanted the property around 1787 when Hannah (surname unknown) was born there. Her daughter by Thomas Barks, Eliza, later married young Samuel's son, also called Samuel. If anyone has family in Waterfall I would grab this excellent book while you can. 3. Keith, I did this quickly, so you might like to check. 1891 census has a Thomas Ellis born 1884 living in Burslem with parents Richard & Emma and other siblings. Ages seem to match the 1879 marriage of Richard Ellis and Emma Alcock. I've seen first and second given names interchanged frequently so when mum calls the kids the husband doesn't think he's in trouble. But as I said, you need to also check 1901 and 1911. Peter

    3. Keith, Logically, if he was born 1884 and migrated to Canada in 1911, he won't be in 1881 UK census but should be in 1891, 1901 and 1911. Have you looked there? You say you can't find data on his parents, yet you seem categoric that his mother was Etnily. I'd suggest that's been mistranscribed. It could be Emily. Why Staffordshire? You haven't indicated. Assuming it's correct there is a marriage of Richard Ellis to Emma Alcock in 1879. Might be worth following them through the census records. Son Richard is registered 1884 in Wolstanton. Can't help with a Canadian marriage. It may be on Ancestry. But perhaps they never married or perhaps it was in UK before he left. Peter

    1. [STAFFORDSHIRE] BURNS - The proverbial brick wall
    2. Robert Burns
    3. Hey all, Detective work needed lol. Benjamin Burns born circa 1839-1841 (according to census) married jane HOWELLS 14th July 1861 at St Matthews Church, Wolverhampton. According to the marriage cert they both lived on Willenhall Road and Benjamins father was also Benjamin and he was deceased. No age was given other than of full age. I have searched all the census prior to the wedding and cannot find a Benjamin Burns that fits the known facts anywhere. The only one that would fit is a son of Thomas and Sarah however when one searches through that line that Benjamin marries an Emma in 1861. On ever census he gives his borthplace as Bilston yet I cannot find any birth on the indexes from 37 to 41. I appreciate that birthplaces can be way of the mark due to first memories. If anyone has any ideas where to go with this one now I would be greatful Rob
