Yes, I had the same problem earlier with a fuzzy 1881 census image for Birmingham. I haven't tried it tonight. Hi Helen, Reading your email was like reading my own history! Like you I am first generation in Australia so I actually subscribe to Ancestry.com.uk rather than Ancestry.com.au! Again, like you, all day yesterday I thought I had a computer problem and was getting quite worried (especially knowing that my poor old PC...rather like me, is getting somewhat long in the tooth) and then I happened to go into Ancestry's FaceBook page where I saw the first complaint and realised that it wasn't my computer, but it was Ancestry! What is getting to me more than anything is that I have put an enormous amount of effort into adding all sorts of information on to individual's pages, and was so happy to be able to look at a page...i.e. my father, and literally see his whole life history at a glance, complete with photographs (of ships he had traveled to Canada and Africa and of course, Australia, on), shipping manifests, baptism and other documents, census images and photo's of places he had lived and worked, and even the Church where he was baptised etc.. Now, to see it all you have to scroll down and it's like reading a toilet roll....reams and reams of scrolling on the pure white uninteresting boring and miserable background! And all with writing that makes me feel like I am either considered to be a child or blind! I wear my glasses for computer work, and didn't have a problem with the format before they started playing with it! It has literally stopped me in my tracks! I was on a real roll with my research, having recently made quite a few new contacts, and I have a page of new source documents to upload, but every time I open my tree to do some work I immediately lose interest and feel like I have had my arms cut off or worse! All we can do I fear, is what I have already started to do...bring it to as many people's attention as possible in the hope that everyone who doesn't like it will complain. Where do you live in Oz? I am in Cairns. And where do your Staffordshire ancestors come from? My father was born in Stoke on Trent and the family lived there and in Newcastle, but originated in Cheshire.... Thankyou for taking time out to write to me about how you feel. It's always good to know you are not alone! Like others I thought my computer had a problem. I agree with everyone's comments. I have done the feedback to Ancestry and also included that I would be very unlikely to recommend it to others. I have just invited 2 new people to view the tree as their daughter has married my nephew. Goodness knows what they think! Margaret
Hi Mike, It is all Ancestry, not .com or .uk or au etc. It is not the home page, but if you go back to my message it says the Overview Page which is the page you go to if you want to add something. If for instance you have a new photo of yourself and want to add it to your tree, you open up your own individual page to work on. That is the page they have changed. It still has the same function, it is just that it is plain, boring and totally uninspiring now, in my opinion. I always took great delight in seeing my pages on individuals growing and looking like a whole lifetime of history, but now, with bigger writing, you have to scroll down to see it all. I simply do not like it! Anyone who dislikes the new layout of Ancestry's Overview page, note that there is a FEEDBACK box in the top right hand corner so you can let them know your feelings about it. Colourless, boring, and designed for children or blind people with nothing but huge print.
I have also seen the new page and i have had to turn the brightness down on my screen. The new page was blinding me, far too bright. Bring my old pages back PLEASE!! Mary
Hi Is that on .com or .co.uk ,the "new search" or the much preferred "old search" Mine has not changed on my customised home page on .co.uk, old search with adblock & flashblock operative (i.e. no adds or images on the home page, moving ads, avatars etc. make me feel travel sick) Mike Fisher in Droitwich my family tree http://mjfisher.tribalpages.com
Mine has changed to the new layout. I'm not keen. Pamela
Hi Diana, Mine has changed too. Yesterday I was searching and I found some photos on other people's trees of a couple of my ancesters, I then went to another page and wham it was in this new boring colourless state. At first I thought it was something I'd done wrong or a problem with my computer, because a few seconds before I had the colour and the old format. I am in Australia, but I mainly use .uk or .com as I am the youngest in my family and the first person born in Australia. All the others in my generation and above were born in England, except for the lines that emmigrated to the US or Canada. I don't like it either, I hate it, like you say colourless, and way too big print. I suppose some may like the big print if their up-close eye-sight has failed, but most people in that situation will be wearing their glasses when on the computer anyway, so I think it's unneceassary to have made the font so much bigger. At the moment it's just on the overview or profile page, but maybe they aren't stopping there, and maybe by tomorrow it will end up on the search pages and others. I hope not. The profile or overview page in my opinion is the worst page they could have used to do this with anyway, because you want to see photos and documents that you and others have uploaded at their best. This is going to take all the enjoyment of using ancestry out for me. :'( Helen ----- Original Message ----- From: thalauafu <dmlfamilyhistory@gmail.com> To: mjflists@yahoo.co.uk; staffordshire@rootsweb.com Cc: Sent: Friday, 19 October 2012 4:10 AM Subject: Re: [STAFFORDSHIRE] Ancestry's new look Hi Mike, It is all Ancestry, not .com or .uk or au etc. It is not the home page, but if you go back to my message it says the Overview Page which is the page you go to if you want to add something. This is a bit off topic but, what new layout? Check your browser settings, because it is still exactly the same to me. Andy 1 The Illegitimacy Act of 1926 allowed children to be re-registered with their mother and father details although their parents were married AFTER the birth - so also look for a marriage after 1957, maybe quite a long time after ! ( ie 20 - 30 yrs even). NB Any re-registration would NOT show on the birth Cert 2 There are quite a number of MICKLETHWAITE / WILD(S) marriages registered esp one in Cheshire in 1950 So when you have Vance's Certs maybe check these out Regards Bill -----Original Message----- From: staffordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:staffordshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Andy Micklethwaite Sent: 17 October 2012 08:49 To: staffordshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [STAFFORDSHIRE] MICKLETHWAITE/WYLES Thanks Jan - something else to think about. Thanks Steve. 3 very good thoughts. Now just waiting for the lottery or a premium bond to get funding for the certs for the ONS! Cheers, Andy. Andy - have you considered these possibilities. 1 Vance was born out of wedlock but the father , ???? Micklethwaite agreed he was the father 2 when the parents married she was a Widow (divorcee) and therefore would have married under another name. Last but not least why think of getting his marriage certificate rather than his BIRTH certificate. On his marriage cert you will get who he states is his father, whereas on the birth certificate you will get his Mother for definite, together with any former names she had, and also who SHE says is his father !! I know which I would go for Steve
Just wondering whether anyone has come across Vance MICKLETHWAITE? I can't fit him into any of the various branches of Micklethwaites in my ONS. Vance was born SepQ 1957 in Stoke RD, mother's maiden name WYLES. He married twice (1981, 1986), had 2 children (1988, 1990) and died (1996) - all in Leicester. I know the name of the other parties but given Rootsweb's rules of engagement on living persons can't mention them here. I know I could get a marriage certificate which would give his father's name (maybe!) which I might eventually do - when I win the lottery, and can buy all the certs I need for the ONS! I can't find a Micklethwaite/Wyles marriage anywhere, and wondered whether any of you lateral-thinking folks could. The birth in Stoke is a rare BMD event for a Micklethwaite in Stoke - the only other one I've come across is for my parents in 1942 - I do have the cert for that :-) Best Wishes, Andy.
