    3. On the 1881 census Ann Maria Taylor and 4 year old Samuel Taylor are lodging with George and Jane Farmer, as is Edward Appleby aged 40. On the 1891 census, George and Jane Farmer have a lodger Edward Appleby (54) and a niece, Lucy Taylor aged 11. This leads me to wonder if little Lucy was actually with Ann Maria in 1881, but George just forgot to record her. Being distracted by the baby crying ;-) Cheers Steve On 16/11/2012 15:26, Trevor wrote: > Hi, > > > > I have an ancestor - Lucy Jane Taylor. 3. I didn't find Samuel and Maria, in fact I haven't found Samuel at all. I found Maria and 4 year old Samuel Jnr And, yes, Ancestry had some mistranscriptions, but all of the items that I have mentioned I have looked at the scans of the originals. I suspect that Lucy is with the Lee(s), wherever they are, but I have yet to find them. 3. Hi Trevor, As the family appear to have hit hard times by 1881 it would not be unusual for a young child to be living with relatives to avoid the workhouse. If you know any of Samuel or Maria's siblings, particularly married sisters, it would be worth looking at them in 1881. Lucy may well be recorded with their surname and possibly even as their daughter and not necessarily born in Willenhall! Grandparents and aunt/uncles would also be worth investigating. It might be a long haul I'm afraid. hth, Anne

    3. Trevor, What was the exact date and registration district for the birth of Lucy Jane Taylor? It's really strange that so young a child isn't living with parents in 1881 census. Not that I could find them in the census. Steve has given some wonderful clues, but I wonder how he found Samuel and Maria in 1881 or if Ancestry has them mistranscribed. The other possibility is, that like some of her brothers, Lucy is being looked after by relatives and is recorded under another surname like Lees or Corfield. Steve has given you some valuable leads but I think more work is still required. Peter

    3. Hi all, Many thanks for the prompt replies and excellent info. The info I have on Lucy Jane Taylor is as follows;- A birth certificate b. 6 Mar 1880 in Short Heath, Willenhall to Samuel Taylor (Coal Miner) and Maria Taylor (formerly Lees) 1881 Census Ann M Taylor 28 (Maria?), Samuel Taylor Son aged 4 both living with a George and Jane Farmer in Short Heath, Willenhall (lodger Edward Appleby, single) Note wife's name. 1891 census A Lucy Taylor living with George (58) and Jane (56) Farmer in Little Bloxwich aged 11, Niece (Lodger Edward Appleby (54), single) 1897 Marriage Certificate Marriage to my Grandfather, Charles Percy Lloyd, (b. Peter Charles), at the Registrar office in Walsall. Both are down as aged 21?? (Witness to this is a Jane Appleby, more later) Lucy's father is down as Samuel Taylor, Coal Miner, she living in Church Street, Bloxwich. 1901 Census Edward (Head 64) and Jane (Wife 65) Appleby living in Church Street, Bloxwich with Charles Lloyd (Son in Law), Lucy J Lloyd (Daughter) with Francis Lloyd and Sydney Lloyd both down as Grandsons. 1911 Census Edward (73) and Jane (75) Appleby living in Woodhall Street, Bloxwich, (Close to Church St) with visitors, Horace Lloyd, (my Father) and Ethel Lloyd (my aunt) My thoughts are as follows. The Ann M Taylor fit's in with Steve's info for the 1881census. But why is Lucy down as niece in the 1891, is George or Jane the Uncle or Aunt. I think the lodger may have married Jane between 1891 and 1901 but I can't find a marriage certificate at present. But how are Charles and Lucy down as Son in Law and Daughter in 1901? There was obviously a connection with the Appleby family for my father and aunt to be staying with them in 1911. Any thoughts to how this all fits would be much appreciated. Many thanks Trev

    3. Hi Trev, Samuel and (Ann) Maria were married on 4th September 1872 at St Thomas's in Wednesbury. Unfortunately, Thomas is indexed as TAYTOR at the GRO, which made him almost impossible for me to find until I posted here, on the evening after someone had been looking at St Thomas' marriage records at the record office! I was aware of 4 boys, Edward, Enoch, Thomas and Samuel because Samuel was my great Granda after the family moved to Northumberland. Edward was born in 1871 and although mostly Taylor on the censuses, changed his name back to Lee before marrying. In 1871 Maria Lees is living as a boarder with Edward Corfiled and his family in Lucknow, Willenhall which is given as the birthplace of the boys in later censuses. In the 1881 the family is broken up, as far as I can tell, with Enoch an Thomas in the Wolverhampton Union Workhouse, Bilston Road. Maria and Samuel are living as lodgers in Willenhall with a street address of Short Heath. Edward was living with Emma Corfield (transcribed as Cosfield on Ancestry) as Edward Lees In 1891 Ann Maria and the 4 boys were living in Cramlington, Northumberland. I have not been able to trace Thomas' birth, not the death of Samuel Snr. Or rather, in each case, I have just found too many possibilities. I was not aware of your Lucy, but the name is used in my family, there being a sister of my grandfather. I have a tree on Ancestry and if you like I will invite you in for a look. 3. My rellie had children, he was in the British Army in India in the late 1870's. They, he and his wife, had a bout 6 who died shortly after birth or were still born, details vary within family. Finally, finally, in 1879 he had a George and he came to Australia around 1900. I got HIS birth record from the East India site but there is no trace of any of his siblings being born or dying, only family records or we would never have known. e.g. Bible entries and just notes in diaries etc.. In another case here in Australia, around 1930's, family had a still born or died shortly after birth, baby girl. She was given to the father to take and bury under a tree on the family property. No funeral or any record in Qld BMD site. Just wrapped in a cloth of some sort and my friend remembers that his father told him that his sister had died, he was only about 5 himself, and didn't quite get it, but he said he remembers his father was crying. Today he can still identify that tree, 73 years later. Sad for all. They told me my husband had to go and register the stillborn straight away did not matter about the living one as you had 6 weeks to do that he had to pay 5 pounds to register it but got no cert for it, i asked could he go to the funeral they said it would not have a grave but would be buried in some other poor persons coffin, they were born at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton and they could not tell us where it would be buried. We came to Australia in May 1957 in 2004 I went back to Wolverhampton to visit rellies and had started to do family history by then as my husband and mine were from around they I happen to be looking at Bushbury Cemetery registers for my aunts and uncles deaths when I came across stillborn son of Keith and Jean Spencer so I went out to the Cemetery the next day and asked if I could go and see where he wa! s! > buried they said I could go back the next day and that they would put a marker on the ground for me to see it was on a grassed area on a slight hill I then asked if I could get a cert for him and I was told only the parents were allowed to apply ( my husband had died in 1992 ) so I send for the cert. On my daughter's birth cert it only shows a single birth even though she is a twin. She went back two years ago and my cousin to her to the grave site as he had been with me when I went. I don't know why people were so callus in those days what harm would it have done to let us know. We had had the first two children and the living twin and another baby girl just 3 months old when we sailed to Australia. I did find out that they started to record stillbiths in 1928. All that heartache of worrying what had become of him so I don't think there will be any records in 1700's > > Jean Spencer.
