The 1815 Calendar shows a Captain French Grey, with seniority of 10 Feb 1810, serving in the 1st Ceylon Regiment. No other mention I'm afraid. Did he die in 1818 or was he killed? If the latter, possibly as a result of his involvement in the 1818 Rebellion. The single best source on the 1818 Rebellion remains Geoffrey Powell's "The Kandyan Wars" (London: Leo Cooper, 1973). If you ever get to the PRO it might be worth perusing the Ceylon Gazettes (CO 58/1 contains the Gazettes from 1813-21), since the first couple of pages of each edition enumerates and posting and promotions (etc.) for officers in the Garrison. You should be able to trace your ancestor's movements through the island this way if/as he changes station. I lived in Sri Lanka/Ceylon for 3 years in the late 1990s -- that's when I acquired my copies of the Calendar. I'm not aware of any on-line version. I've noticed that according to their catalogue, the British Library has a full run back to 1814, (which I think was the first year of publication.) All French Grays male siblings were Commissioned Officers (As was his father) and some of them and other relations, through marriage, also served in Ceylon so it would be of great interest to me to be able to peruse these calendars. Thanking you or anyone else who can provide me with this information Richard M Gray Swansea, S Wales, UK. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Glen Hodgins" <glen.hodgins@sympatico.ca> To: <SRILANKA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 1:00 PM Subject: Re: [SRILANKA] ROBERTS 2nd Ceylon Regiment >I have the "Ceylon Calendar" of 1815 (a directory-cum-civil/military list) > which shows a 1st Lieut C.W.
