Good Morning List, Does any one have any information on Nuwara Eliya, Little England, as it was known in colonial times. It is was primarily a hillstation of Sri Lanka/Ceylon. Besides researching through the LDS, does anyone have any information on Nuwara Eilya. My paternal grandfather and his sister were born there. Unfortunately a trip to London to visit the OIOC is not possible financially nor is paying a researcher. Any ideas would be appreciated. E. Warner
I'm certain many list subscribers would be willing to help out -- but (quite frankly) your request is rather vague -- "any information on Nuwara Eliya" -- I have shelves full of information! Hello Mr Warner, I am happy to assist, even briefly, anyone who wants to know about lovely Nuwara Eliya. I spent the first months of my life living at "Lebanon", our home in the hill country (you can see a snap of a portion of the house at http://www.greatmirror.com/index.cfm?countryid=376&chapterid=958&picid=21&picturesize=medium.) NE has changed since my early years there, but is still very beautiful. Here are some websites you might enjoy, providing an overview. If you can manage it--if the political situation allows-- do visit. It is a wonderful place. http://www.greatmirror.com/ (select Sri Lanka, then NE) http://www.explorelanka.com/places/hill/n_eliya.htm http://www.billwood.com/travel/srilanka/ (travelogue) http://www.nuwaraeliya.org/mayor.htm (municipal council of Nuwara Eliya web site) Greetings from the Netherlands. Beth, I just rec'd your e-m re NEliya and fwd'd it to a few people for its invaluable links as Little England is every Lankan's favourite place esp when overseas; we are in Melb - a Little Colombo anyway. And one such chappie, a succ'ful lawyer here called Ana Jayasinghe whose practice name is Jayson says: I lived next to "Lebanon" for 2 years in N' Eliya boarded at Lyn De Kretser's house!!!!!!!!!!!!! This brings tears to my eyes. Sometimes I am so ,,homesick,, for a touch of our culture, where ever it is. We celebrated our anniversary in Mel in June. It was wonderful to be with family, shop for ,,Ceylon,, food stuffs at the Hindustani import store in Dandenong, to eat Sunday night hoppers at Greenlands, and just pop ,,up the road,, for Vattalappam! Of course, there are good things about the Netherlands and we make the best of our life here. But there's no real substitute for those shared things like N'Eliya, Lanka and that cultural world as it once was, when we lived together in peace. I'm sure I idealise it. Wishing you happy holidays and greetings from a very chilly Holland. Please greet Jayson from me as well, though we've not met. He would be surprised to see Lebanon; that area is much changed, but is still a beauty. Thank you for writing. Blessings.
