Everybody/Anybody, I have hit a stumbling block and I would be grateful for any advice/assistance: I have a great-great grandfather - Richard FORD - who was an Armourer Sergeant in the Royal Irish Regiment. He was stationed in Ceylon in the late 1830's for a couple of years. He appears to have had his wife with him (this was not uncommon apparently!). I know that her first name was Mary. I would like to research her line of ancestry back further but the problem I have is that I don't know her maiden surname. I have found a number of marriages on the IGI between a Richard Ford and a Mary ????, at about the right time, including one in Chatham ,Kent (which is where he sailed from), but, without knowing Mary's maiden surname, I can't be certain of the correct one. To complicate matters further there appears to be another Richard Ford in the regiment at at his time who was also married to a Mary!!! He was also a sergeant (although just a plain sergeant). One piece of positive information I have is that my Richard and Mary had a son - Richard John Ford - , born in Colombo on August 23rd 1837. I have the birth certificate (from the Army births at the GRO). Frustratingly, this certificate is different from the usual English birth certificate and does not give the mother's maiden surname! I was wondering if there might be a record of his baptism in Colombo which might just mention Mary's maiden name? All suggestions gratefully received! I should add that I also have the baptism record for a daughter to plain 'Sergeant' Richard Ford, in Trincomalee, which gives the mother's maiden name, but I am reasonably certain that this is the other Richard Ford! Hi Chris, If you know about the Army births at the GRO, then you most probably know about the Army Marriages at GRO, by Army Chaplains at Stations Abroad. Getting the marriage Certificate (perhaps for each of the Richard FORDs), may be the only way to find out what Mary's surname may be... My Army births at the GRO Certificates for the children of my Ancestor show only the name of the father and first name of the mother... but the Marriage Certificate shows her full name..(but nothing else about her) Perhaps this may be useful to you, The website www.regiments.org, shows that 11th Regiment of Foot is the Numeric title for The Royal Irish Regiment.. There is One surviving record for a Richard Ford of the Royal Irish Regiment, at the GRO. The piece Number is WO 97/387/20 for RICHARD FORD Born STEPNEY, London and Middlesex Served in 18th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 47. Gay, Thank you very much for replying. Unfortunately I suspect they married in this country (UK). Richard joined the regiment on 11th December 1830 (aged 23), and was immediately sent to the Ionian islands (where the regiment was stationed at that time). In February 1832 the regiment returned to England. There is a child (George) born in Manchester (when the regiment was stationed there) in 1834. (i.e. just before BMD registration started - so there is only a baptism entry and these rarely state mother's maiden surname!) In November 1836 the regiment embarks for Ceylon! Ergo I would say that the marriage took place in the UK (or possibly the Ionian islands - but they have their own BMD records and I can't find a marriage!) The baptism record for the child of the 'other' Richard Ford, at Trincomalee, gives the parent's marriage details, not just the mother's maiden name. They married in London (Hampstead). Of the other possibilities I have found on the IGI, I strongly suspect the one at Chatham (in 1829), but of course, ! can't prove it! The WO entry that you refer to is my gg-grandfather, and I already have a copy of this entry! Thank you for taking the time to reply!
