Hi Chris, Fortunately, you live in Britain, where most of the records are so much more accessible than they are for List members such as myself (Australia) and others from various other countries. I am glad you have the WO97 for your ggrandfather...such an invaluable document for your family history...Apparently it does not show a marriage. My soldier ancestor enlisted earlier than yours and his Marriage is noted on his WO97., but I believe his marriage was "'with permission" . Perhaps your marriage (if there was one during service) was without permission and therefore would not have been noted. You have said the Ionian Islands have their own BMDs, however I am quite sure , when I was searching for my own records...I have seen on the index for Army Chaplains BMDs for Stations Abroad, some records for Ionia..but I could be wrong. I suppose you have checked to see whether the 1861 Census or the 1871 or any, show the birthplace of Mary. Apart from those avenues, I am at a loss. Gay, Thanks again. Yes, the Ionian islands records are amongst the military, overseas, and other miscellaneous records at the GRO. Unfortunatley, Mary died in India in 1852 and is buried there! The fact that there is no mention of his marriage on his WO97 is further evidence, I think, that he was already married. I will keep digging.
