Nancy/Margo, I have a military birth in my ancestry in Sri Lanka in 1836 (a son of my gg-grandfather who was there serving in the Royal Irish Regiment!) I found the birth in the 'chaplains returns' index at the Family Record Centre in London, and ordered a birth certificate there and then. There is also an 'army birth, marriages and deaths index) As you're in the USA you can go to <www.findmypast.com> and search the same indexes on-line. If you find a reference for the name you can then order a certificate online from the General Register Office website. Sorry, dont know the web address, try googling for it!
