Hi Margo... ..I don't know if you would have them at LDS in Salt Lake City, because I thought they were an LDS filming of GRO records, but I sure you would be able to get them somewhere, and that is the "Army Chaplains Records of BDMs for Stations Abroard." These are GRO records for the British Army. They are an index of events for British soldiers, and they give you the index details to allow you to write to the GRO now the National Archives UK and obtain the birth Certificate... The microfiche you would need are for Births of Children:- Index to certified copies of registers of births (officers, soldiers, & their families) from chaplains to the forces at stations abroad, 1796-1880. Aar - Jed (GRO no F540) - fiche 1 Jef - Wil (GRO no F541) - fiche 2 Wil - Zam (GRO no F542) fiche 3 There are lots of other fiche such as for Marriages and Deaths... The full set of fiche are:- . G.R.O. Army Regimental Registers of Births and marriages 1761-1924, and deaths 1796-1987.There are several series, some of them overlapping, with an uncertain amount of duplication & omission.The name, place, year and regiment are required to carry out a conclusive search.These relate to events in U.K. and abroad. 2. Army Chaplains returns of Births, Baptisms, Marriages, Deaths & Burials 1796-1880 which all relate to events abroad. These do not give the regiment, only name. place, and date range. Can you elaborate a bit on your Guard please? William Jefferies had "Retired Guard" as his occupation on a census return. I thought it referred to his stint in the railway, but now I'm wondering if it was something else.
