Hi Christine and others... Just in case the BDM events were for British soldiers stationed in Ceylon at the time...I will recap on my earlier message to Margo. "Army Chaplains Records of BDMs for Stations Abroard." These are GRO records for the British Army. They are an index of events for British soldiers, and they give you the index details to allow you to write to the GRO now the National Archives UK and obtain the birth Certificate... The microfiche you would need are for Births of Children:- Index to certified copies of registers of births (officers, soldiers, & their families) from chaplains to the forces at stations abroad, 1796-1880. Aar - Jed (GRO no F540) - fiche 1 Jef - Wil (GRO no F541) - fiche 2 Wil - Zam (GRO no F542) fiche 3 There are lots of other fiche such as for Marriages and Deaths... The full set of fiche are:- . Army Chaplains returns of Births, Baptisms, Marriages, Deaths & Burials 1796-1880 which all relate to events abroad. These do not give the regiment, only name. place, and date range. I have saved the following instructions, given to me by an LDS member many years ago...I hope it helps others on the list.. I do not have any personal interest in EIC information but I have seen there is a lot on the LDS catalogue . 1. First go to the LDS site: http://www.familysearch.org/ . On the right hand side of the screen you will find several options.. >From those options select Family History Library Catalog a.. Click on the Family History Library Catalog (don't worry, you can check out some of the others later!) 4. When the FHLC screen comes up you will be given 3 search options. Now comes the fun - it is easy to miss finding a category of records by searching under 'wrong' or just 'different' criteria. Try these: a) All searches - Author - India_Office - Accountant General's Department b) Place - India - (eg) Military records - Indexes c) Place - Great Britian (&/or England) - then a subject, eg Military Records etc 5. Each search method will bring up a different list of continuation options. For example, a) above will bring up another list including pension records. wills indexes, click on the one you want. At each stage of the search a new screen with catalogue information and clickable links will pop up. 6. When the catalogue information screen is arrived at, there will usually by a clickable tab on the top right of the main frame which says: "View Film Notes". Click on this and you will then get a list of all the film numbers and brief description of what is contained on the film. You now have all the info needed to order a film for viewing at your local LDS Family History Centre. Of course, you didn't need to read the above waffle past item 3. as full instructions for using the Catalog are shown in the right frame as you progress through the site. Secondly, most (?all) LDS FHCs should have the Catalog available both on CD ROM and on microfiche (there are 3 fiche making up the India catalogue and they are good for a browse!!) Good luck and happy searching.
