    2. As I hadn't heard back, I've gone ahead & started extracting biographical notices from the Colombo Journal, which I'll print below. Hope they help someone! Cheers, Roz Colombo Journal 1833. Published twice-weekly, usually Wednesdays & Saturdays. National Archives, Kew, CO 59/2. News predominantly from Europe, especially England & Ireland. Sporadic BMDs, all of which are noted. Other useful sections could be the Shipping Intelligence, followed by Arrivals & Departures, which often name families. There are also occasional notices of probate of wills being granted, - of which one, in the issue d.13 Feb, is included as an example. Sat 5 Jan: M: At Jaffna, on the 27th Dec 1832, at St John’s Church, on St John’s Day, by the Rev C David, Mr Abraham Rodrigo Mootochristian to Miss Elizabeth Sophia David, youngest daughter of the Revd Christian David, Colonial Chaplain. D: On the morning of the 31st inst, Frederick, the infant son of W H Young Esq, Surgeon of the Ceylon Regt. D: At Berbice, on the 22nd of May, after a short attack of dyspepsia, David Power Esq, the Protector of Slaves of that colony…. Wed 9 Jan: no BMDs Sat 12 Jan: D: At Hulfsdorp, on the 11th inst, Charles Frederick, Baron von Conrady. Wed 16 Jan: M: On the 21st July at St Mary’s Church, Dover, R F Bourchier Esq to Antoinette Anna Louisa, daughter of the Hon J Rodney. This issue of 16 Jan also includes a large supplement, dated 24 Dec 1832, containing a long list of “widows & orphans who have most claims on the Dutch Government”. The names & jobs of the husbands are given & the dependents are named. There are 380 family claims, plus a short additional list of 20 or so. Sat 19 Jan, Wed 23 Jan, Sat 26 Jan & Wed 30 Jan: no BMDs. Sat 2 Feb: D: At Jaffna, Jan 14, of convulsions in childbed, Mrs Harriet Lathrop, wife of the Reverend Miron Winslow, aged 36 years, of which 13 had been passed in Ceylon. Mrs W. was the Conductress of the Female Central School of the American Mission, consisting of 50 Charity Boarders….. Wed 6 Feb: B: At Manar, on the evening of the 30th January, the Lady of W H Whiting Esq, Civil Service, of a daughter. Sat 9 Feb: No BMDs. Wed 13 Feb: No BMDs. Note re probate being granted of Last Will & Testament of Walter Mathison Esq, late of the Ceylon Civil Service, to his Executors, David Anderson Blair & Robert Wells Esq. Sat 16 Feb: Supreme Court: long list of defendants given, - all with Sri Lankan names. Tue 19 Feb, Sat 23 Feb, Wed 27 Feb & Sat 2 Mar: No BMDs. Wed 6 Mar: M: At Galle, on the 5th February, by the Revd J Wenham, Lieut Francis Smith of the 2d or Queen’s Royals, to Jane Eliza, second daughter of the late Captain Smellie, formerly of the 51st Regt. Sat 9 Mar: No BMDs Wed 13 Mar: Escaped from the custody of the agent of Government of Saffragan: Yainna Kirrihattena of Attekalan Korle, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, complexion black, beard shorn, hair tied in a knot, some of the foreteeth of the lower Jaw fallen. D: At Colombo, on Saturday the 9th inst in the 24th year of her age…Mary, wife of Serjeant Major Carey, HM’s 61st Regt. Sat 16 Mar: B: At Colombo, on the 14th instant, Mrs Ackland, of a son. Sat 23 Mar: M: At St Peter’s Church, Colombo, on the 21st inst, by the Reverend B Bailey, Senior Colonial Chaplain, Serjeant Patrick Dewan, HM’ s 97th Regt, to Mrs Anne Wilmot, widow of the late Paymaster Serjeant Edwin Osborne Wilmot, of the same corps, & of Sevenoaks, Kent. Wed 27 Mar: M: At St Peter’s Church, on the 18th inst, by the Revd B Bailey, Senior Colonial Chaplain, Schoolmaster Serjeant Thomas Montford, of HM’s 97th Regt, to Maria Sarah Wilson, only daughter of the late Lieut Wilson, Pioneer Lascars.
