Nothing for Christie & there's just the one brief ref to Tolfrey.......... The Kandyan Wars. the British Army in Ceylon 1803-1818 Chapter 13: The Third War: Rebellion pp 242 & 243 "At the enquiry that followed Eknelligoda's allegation, only two men were incriminated, a chief called Madugalle and the Malay Mohandiram who had fled from Sri Wikrama's wrath at the time of Pilima Talauva's death in 1811. The Malay was deported to Batavia and a court of his fellow chiefs found Madugalle guilty. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and the confiscation of his goods, but Brownrigg released him at the time of the 1817 Perahera. There were further rumours of unrest in 1816 also, but the reports on this occasion originated from William Tolfrey, the probable author of 'Gentleman on the Spot', who had replaced D'Oyly in the post of Chief Translator. Tolfrey, however, died insane in February, with the result that Brownrigg discounted the truth of his warnings." regards Anne H. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gay Williams" <gayw@ihug.co.nz> To: <SRILANKA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 01, 2007 6:34 AM Subject: [SRILANKA] The Kandyan Wars > Hello Anne H > > My ancestors in Ceylon were Dr Thomas Christie and Samuel Tolfrey.
