Dear Listers: I am looking for information on Captain Charles William Lewis ROBERTS, who was with the 2nd Ceylon Regiment ("Ramsay's" present on the island from 1802-1821) . He was in Point de Galle in 1808, when his daughter Georgiana was born. However, I think he may also have died there, since the Times death notice of his second daughter Jane Matilda Roberts, published 80 years later, calls him the late Captain Roberts of Point de Galle i.e. no promotion and he never left. Could have retired there though. Otherwise all I have on him is that daughters Nancy Sophia and Jane Matilda were both baptised in Portsmouth in 1802, a sign that the family had been in a posting somewhere else perhaps, and postponed the christenings for a home leave. His wife was called Nancy, otherwise no info. I have a feeling that the Roberts may have come from Dublin/near Dublin, since daughter Georgiana subsequently married there in 1848, and unmarried Jane may have been a governess in the city. I am not sure how to continue. I was hoping that there are church records / official records that could be consulted. Best of all would be army records, but where? And what? Ceylon seems to be a case apart and not included in India records. We do have an LDS branch here. Can anyone give me a push in the right direction? Even advise who I might approach to look into it professionally for me - I live in Germany, so London records are out. Georgina
Thanks to Geoff Summers for recommending this site. I'm working my way through them and finding a tantalising amount of information about the D. McMillan we've been looking for for years. And then I'll be able to go back and read some of the fascinating looking articles for background information. For you all, a visit to the History of Ceylon Tea web site at http://www.historyofceylontea.com is a MUST!! Whilst being sponsored by Dilmah Tea and the Planter's Association (Ceylon) and giving interesting accounts of Tea and Cricket in Sri Lanka, its main interest to genealogists is the fact that they have scanned many Ferguson's Directories. There are currently 24 volumes on the site starting with the 1871-1872 issue, some are over 1000 pages, and it is understood there will eventually be about 100 of them. They contain statistical information about Ceylon/Sri Lanka for the years in question plus lists and lists of names of the inhabitants. It's not that easy to find where the names are held - after choosing the Directory of interest, scroll down until you see the words "General Directory" or "Directory" on the left hand side. Clicking that brings up a host of page numbers and it is then a matter of slogging through to find your names of interest. Best of luck Geoff Summers Canterbury, Kent, England. I suppose I should add that I have no connection or financial interest in the site or its sponsors.
Hi Geoff, Nice to see you pop your head up again... You have given me the information below previously, but despite the fact that I know EXACTLY the date of the marriage and the place, and a Sri Lankan friend here in Australia was able to tell me the Name of the Province and the District. I still had difficulties which I have not yet been able to overcome. When you get to that step, there is then the problem of knowing which Religion Cheers Gay Message ----- From: "Geoff Summers" <Geoff@Summers.net> To: <SRILANKA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2006 8:34 AM Subject: [SRILANKA] Re: Birth information > Mick > > I've found some names of possible interest to you in the Times of Ceylon > Green Book 1932 which provides the list of inhabitants of Ceylon and other > statistical information for 1931. Mick I've found some names of possible interest to you in the Times of Ceylon Green Book 1932 which provides the list of inhabitants of Ceylon and other statistical information for 1931. I know no more about each individual. I gave the Schokman information to someone else on the list so you may have another source. With regard to other records, Ceylon did not send records back to the UK as did India so all the records are somewhere in Sri Lanka. The LDS did film many, many records but you have to know the Districts you're interested in and approximate dates. Hi List, first time member of this List. I would like to pose a question if I may please? I have two people who were allegedly born in Sri Lanka/Ceylon. A, Kingsley Vernon OORLOFF some time before 1900, the son of Charles Joseph and Louisa Wilhilmina De La HARPE. B, Aidlin Beatrice Maud CLASSEN, born 25 March 1897, daughter of James Gerald and Aidlin Maud SCHOKMAN, both parents possibly of Dutch descent. I have no idea of whether there are records centres situated within Sri Lanka, or whether they would have been within their parents embassy records for birth abroad. Any ideas would be very much welcomed. Many thanks and kind regards Mick McAllister
Hi Anthony Civil registration officially started in Ceylon in 1867. It's all a bit hit and miss prior to about 1900 when registration got more comprehensive. Everything depends on knowing exactly where a birth, death or marriage took place on the Island as this is how the records are organized, otherwise it's like searching for a needle in a haystack as there is no master surname index to search by. To find what records are available look at the Latter Day Saints Familysearch web site by clicking on the following URL: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localityrelated&columns=*%2C180%2C0&subject=190&subject_disp=Sri_Lanka Hope this helps and best regards. Hello all. I'm writing to this list in the hope that some kind soul can point me in the right direction to obtain a copy of a birth certificate for my grandfather, William Edward SADLEIR. According to both his wedding and death certificates, he was born in Ceylon in 1876, the second son of his Irish-born parents William Martley SADLEIR and Mary Augusta Elizabeth MITCHELL. The family subsequently moved to Australia and settled there. I have already asked this question of what I believe to be the relevant government department, but after 6 months, I have had no reply. Thanks in advance for any information received, - Anthony Tasmania, Australia

Goodmorning Peter and Gay, I gave family information for that website as my mother was born in Sri Lanka, from her mother's side she is a Buultjens and from father's side a Solomons. Some of the names /dates are (by now) incorrect or not updated, I did not pass this on. For the families that are non-Ceylon you should write to the webmaster and give/ask clarification. regards, Jennifer On 01/12/05, Gay Fielding <gayze@tpg.com.au> wrote: > You are right Peter, my family are there as well. #1142 and noted as > Burgher, which is not true.. > It seems my information has been comes from an email which I sent to a > particular person, the Sri Lankan genforum, or this mailing list in the > past, looking for information....not giving information ~ and I have > named as the submitter...but named by my Maiden name..which I did not use on > my email.. > So it appears that someone is gleaning the information we write to this list > or wherever and using it to pad the > http://www.rootsweb.com/~lkawgw/index.html website > > Downright rude I would say..since we were not even asked if it could be > submitted...especially since in my case the genealogy information has been > incorrectly stated and corrupted by assumptions made by whoever > submitted..and as it appears in your case as well > I suggest everyone check their family trees on this site. > > Jennifer Van de Greft's family is on there as well...I noticed the name..as > I guess, are many more. > Thanks for alerting us > Cheers > Gay > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Peter Goggin" <prgoggin@swiftdsl.com.au> > To: <SRILANKA-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, December 01, 2005 10:13 PM > Subject: [SRILANKA] Non Burgher families on site list. > > > >I have noticed that a number of parts of my family tree have been > > included on the site http://www.rootsweb.com/~lkawgw/index2.html > > as burgerfamilies. You are right Peter, my family are there as well. #1142 and noted as Burgher, which is not true.. It seems my information has been comes from an email which I sent to a particular person, the Sri Lankan genforum, or this mailing list in the past, looking for information....not giving information ~ and I have named as the submitter...but named by my Maiden name..which I did not use on my email.. So it appears that someone is gleaning the information we write to this list or wherever and using it to pad the http://www.rootsweb.com/~lkawgw/index.html website Downright rude I would say..since we were not even asked if it could be submitted...especially since in my case the genealogy information has been incorrectly stated and corrupted by assumptions made by whoever submitted..and as it appears in your case as well I suggest everyone check their family trees on this site. Jennifer Van de Greft's family is on there as well...I noticed the name..as I guess, are many more. Thanks for alerting us Cheers Gay ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Goggin" <prgoggin@swiftdsl.com.au> To: <SRILANKA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 01, 2005 10:13 PM Subject: [SRILANKA] Non Burgher families on site list. >I have noticed that a number of parts of my family tree have been > included on the site http://www.rootsweb.com/~lkawgw/index2.html > as burgerfamilies. I have noticed that a number of parts of my family tree have been included on the site http://www.rootsweb.com/~lkawgw/index2.html as burgerfamilies. There branches of my family tree have no connection withSri lanka. e.g. Family 1096 Thomas Chamberlain Family 1094 Joseph Moret. It would be interesting to know who placed these records on the site and why. Note that at no time have I ever given permission for my records to be placed on this site. Christie and Tolfrey families I am seeking your help with the possibility of finding when my families left Ceylon for England I have a Tolfrey Will made 'at Colombo in the Island of Ceylon this 8th day of March 1809 - S Tolfrey' prior to the Tolfrey family leaving Ceylon in 1809. The Will states "being about to embark for England with my dearest wife and my son Frederic. My Will is that if we should all die or be drowned on the voyage...." The daughter of Samuel and Mary Tolfrey -[?Elizabeth] Mary Isabella Tolfrey had married Dr Thomas Christie in Ceylon in 1804 and Thomas and Mary Isabella with their three sons are reported to have left for England on the same ship. I look forward to your comments, and any information you might have regarding the Tolfrey's and Christies in Ceylon that I might check against my data. Thank you in anticipation Gay
Good morning Listers, I am hoping that SKS can confirm for me that Edward TOLFREY who served in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) for over 20 years, was the son of Samuel TOLFREY who served in Ceylon from 1801, taking up the position of a member of the Board of Revenue, who subsequently became the Civil Auditor- General from 1806 to 1809. Below taken from details regarding Edward TOLFREY'S life and death:- "...Edward TOLFREY, of His Majesty's Ceylon Civil Establishment, and late Judicial Commissioner in the Kandian Provinces, who after a period of nearly 20 years' service in various parts of this Island died in Kandy on the 9th August, 1821. Aged 37 years." Tolfrey is buried in Kandy's Garrison Cemetery, but no stone there survives..." I just need to confirm that his parents were in fact Samuel and Mary Tolfrey (nee BARBAUD). Thank you in anticipation. Regards, Janice Belrose - Sydney Australia
Good morning, I'm doing some family history research on behalf of my mother-in-law. I am trying to trace any information concerning a Reginald Hubert DUNCOMBE. We believe that he moved to Sri Lanka in about 1926 and was involved in the tea trade. We believe that he was accompanied by his wife, Winifred. As well as welcoming any information, I would also welcome any help or advice concerning further research. Thank you Michael Hickman Andalucia, Spain
If anybody on the list has contacted Andrew Buultens for research of the above name could they please contact me off list. regards Jean
I understand the Dutch Reformed Church kept very good BMD records for the Dutch Burgher community in Ceylon. Are these records accessible on line ? Regards Peter Goggin
Hi All Ceylonese, I am not of Ceylonese blood but my gggrandfather who was raised in Ceylon from age 3 to adulthood, had a great love and respect for the Nation of Ceylon..His brother was a Master of the Royal College Colombo, married a Ceylonese lady and died there in 1909, another brother died surveying the jungles of Ceylon and his parents also died there.. ( as an Aussie I use the term Cinghalese which seems to have been adopted in some areas of the world.) Cheers Gay Research Names: http://www.perthdps.com/research/fie01.html
No Peter unfortunately they are not. There are even "mother" films in The Hague but they wont put them on CD for me as those are the only films and they do their copying outside and wont take the risk of having them lost, burned, kidnapped, stumped on...... So I have been trying to get them from the Mormons. The Mormons do not sell copies to private individuals unless I get permission from the source in Colombo, and that is what I am trying to do for some time now. The Mormons do have the largest copy material for Ceylon with last wills and BMD and correspondence from Dutch times. You can order copies to view at your local LDS center, the originals looked terrible in The Hague and you have to know Dutch. From the English times they should be in English (I have not seen due to lack of time) regards, Jennifer On 16/08/05, Peter Roy Goggin <prgoggin@swiftdsl.com.au> wrote: > I understand the Dutch Reformed Church kept very good BMD records for the > Dutch Burgher community in Ceylon.
