Dear Ann I am Crystelle Van Dort and am a member of the Dutch Reformed Church/Wellawatte in Sri Lanka. We had a Pastor by the name of Neville Koch. He and the family were more friends and our relationship was such since his family had been friends of my husbands family beginning in the previous generation. The friendship continued and grew closer since it ran into the third generation with his daughter and mine being the very best of friends. They are now in California but I know that he will take the time to assist you if you contact his at pastornev@cox.net Frankly I have not contacted them for some time now and do feel rather guilty of my lapse. Just for the sake of info, do let me know if you have contacted him and the outcome of your inquiry. In the meanwhile will also try from other souces at this end. My late husband would have been the best souce of info but unfortunately that is not to be. Hi all I am still looking for the deaths of Arthur Mansell Carre and Ellen nee Browne. Ellen is difficult as family stories abound. The youngest child was born in 1876. He was in Bedford, England in 1881 census age 4. The other children all returned to England as well but are not picked up until they are older. Some say Ellen went mad. I am not surprised considering one child dies and 5 went to UK! I think this may have been when her troubles began and probably died before 1900. Arthur was in the Kandy area to begin with and managed many plantations over the years. I have the records. In 1904 he retired at Suduganga, Maskeliya. In 1909 he is Rosawatte, Kandy. Ellen's father was Robert Bogle Browne. I am pretty sure the parents went there as well. They vanished out of UK after 1851. I went there last year in September for a week and found the christenings of 4 of the children and marriage of her sister Amy and a cousin. I was told the the person who did this was busy and unable to do it before I left. I left money, more than I was asked for, self addressed envelope and details of the entries to be copied. The elderly gentleman who looks after the records came and asked me for money to attend a special seminar, gave that. Also made a donation to the Church on my first visit. On my return I sent Christmas Cards to the gentleman and the Minister in charge. No certificates arrived so I then sent International stamps. I got a christmas card but nothing else. This was St Pauls C of E in Kandy! The minister as well as the church warden. At the church in Pussellawa exactly the same thing happened. The lady there spoke perfect English and has a daughter in Sydney. My camera broke while I was there or I would have taken pics. I could kick myself now! The people there are having a really tough time and I tried to be as generous to them as I could. I have given up now after 2 letters to them. Regards Camilla

Hi Listers I am still looking for Arthur and Ellen Carré, date of death. I have looked in the LDS and viewed the film re Tombstones in Ceylon but can't find anything, Thanks Camilla
Dear Glen Thanks very much for your mails: Captain Roberts was buried in Tangalle in 1816, which explains his absence in the 1825 directory. I have had some amazing pointers this week from people with the J. Penry Lewis "Tombstones and monuments in Ceylon book", in case you are also personally interested. I have the whole family of six daughters and son, and his wife's details - all in one fell swoop! A great leap forward. The 1815 Calendar shows a Captain French Grey, with seniority of 10 Feb 1810, serving in the 1st Ceylon Regiment. No other mention I'm afraid. Did he die in 1818 or was he killed? If the latter, possibly as a result of his involvement in the 1818 Rebellion. The single best source on the 1818 Rebellion remains Geoffrey Powell's "The Kandyan Wars" (London: Leo Cooper, 1973). If you ever get to the PRO it might be worth perusing the Ceylon Gazettes (CO 58/1 contains the Gazettes from 1813-21), since the first couple of pages of each edition enumerates and posting and promotions (etc.) for officers in the Garrison. You should be able to trace your ancestor's movements through the island this way if/as he changes station. I lived in Sri Lanka/Ceylon for 3 years in the late 1990s -- that's when I acquired my copies of the Calendar. I'm not aware of any on-line version. I've noticed that according to their catalogue, the British Library has a full run back to 1814, (which I think was the first year of publication.) All French Grays male siblings were Commissioned Officers (As was his father) and some of them and other relations, through marriage, also served in Ceylon so it would be of great interest to me to be able to peruse these calendars. Thank you, Ms Watkins, for sharing info on this site. It was wonderful to look at all the old places, especially NE and what I am certain was the "smaller" of the two bungalows my family once owned! I hate that some of these once unique structures have fallen on hard times. What a shame our beautiful island is so torn by strife. Breaks my heart. But wonderful to see all the old "homestead". I may have been a child when I left, but Lanka will always live in my heart. Thanks.
