Hi Maryjane As you're 'doing some work on the Rowland family' I'd be very grateful if you could keep an eye out for: Alice Emily ROWLAND (b. ca 1857), who married Daniel McMillan (b. ca 1846), a clothier, in Christ Church, Mutwai, Colombo on 7 Dec 1876. Malcolm Jansze found this information for me some years ago...through this list (thanks again, Malcolm) We've since found out a little about Daniel McMillan (largely through the Ferguson Directories) ...he ran a tailor's establishment in Colombo, spent some time working as a cutter for Cargills, died around the turn of the century, and his widow, Alice Emily lived in various addresses in Colombo before moving to Nurawa Eliya, which was her address in 1915, when her son Sydney joined the AIF. But we know nothing of her origins, nor of Daniel McMillan's. Repeated faxes, emails and letters to the Sri Lanka authorities over the years have been unanswered, and any thing you can turn up in your research into the Rowland family which might be a connection would be of great help to my friend Doug McMillan, the only surviving grandson of Daniel and Alice Emily. Cheers Mike Murray Fremantle, Oz > **************************************

Hi MaryJane, We have been trying for years to find out where my Great-grand-father (Richard William Rowlands) died in Ceylon and where he is buried, with no success. When we migrated to Australia in 1960 and had to submit a genealogy for the approval of Mr Altendorf my father found that RWR died on 23rd April 1888. When my father died I went through all his papers but could not find any evidence to support this. To try a long shot, I wonder whether his name appears in the Book of Tombstones and Monuments. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Regards. Ed.Rowlands. Hi MaryJane, The following is an extract from my partial history of my BRIDGNELL family. William BRIDGNELL - 1800 - 1859(my 2nd great-great uncle), served in Sri Lanka between 1824 - 1849. "On 21 March 1827 in Colombo Ceylon{Sri Lanka}, William, a bachelor, married Eliza Meerman, a spinster, the daughter of a local Magistrate of Dutch or Burgher origins {N. Meerman}. They were married by Licence by the Rev A Armour. They had four daughters, all but the firstborn dying in infancy: Eliza Mary, born Kornegalle, Colombo Ceylon, 16 March 1828; Julia, born Matura, Ceylon, 27 May 1831, died 5 December 1845; Anne Amelia, born Ceylon, c. 1834, died abt 1836; Augusta, born Ceylon, c. 1836, died abt 1836. All were buried in the Wesleyan Chapel in the Fort, Galle, Ceylon. Her father was Magistrate of Pullam{?}, her mother a respectable Dutch Lady whose parents came from Holland, & her uncle from whose house , & from under whose care I married her, is {Captain Gaulterus Schneider,RE} the Surveyer General of the Whole Island". My main interests however is in his wife's side of the family - the MEERMANs (WEERMAN?), and any links with the SCHNEIDERs. So would appreciate any information regarding N MEERMAN, who he married and the SCHNEIDER connection. So if you have any details of any MEERMAN marriages, births or deaths. It would be a plus if N. Meerman had married either a Schneider or a STAATS. Finally I would like to thank the MENDIS family (Sunil, Shavindri & Vesta) without whom my research into the Sri Lanka period would still be largely unknown - I have, unfortunately lost contact with them, my PC crashed and I lost the details. In hopeful anticipation. Best regards, David K Bridgnell from overcast and rainy north Cornwall ---------------------------------------- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. I have this information in "The Story of Kingswood, Kandy" by L.E.Blaze (Principal 1891-1923). E.A.G.Koch attended Kingswood College, Kandy from April 1901 to December 1905. He was later manager and proprietor of Koch's Garage, Galle. Then Honoraray Secretary, Galle Y,M,C,A - 1925-1931 and Director since 1918. R.V.E. Koch attended Kingswood College, Kandy from November 1905 to April 1908. Superintendent of Exercise, Bandarawela. I hope it is of some relevance. Hi Ann, I was searching and found this site from Hamburg. Don't know if the Koch's came from this area. I know that the earliest Bartholomuesz came originally from Hamburg, and apparently so did a number of DB families. (BTW, I studied with a Jûrgen Koch at Tuebingen University in Germany some years ago. It's a fairly common name and I doubt there's a connection, but it's fun to speculate.) We are probably distanly related as well, as my aunt is a Brohier, another is a Toussant. It's a small DB world ;-) Best regards, Beth http://www.beyond-history.com/beyond-history-english/ ----- Original Message ----- From: Ann Koch To: Dr Beth Leembruggen-Kallberg Sent: Monday, October 02, 2006 1:07 PM Subject: Re: Koch family Thank you Beth I remember 'Bramble Court' so well. Dear Ann: In the book "List of inscriptions on tombstones and monuments in Ceylon" by J. Penry Lewis, published 1913, there are two Kochs listed in the section called "Obituary of the uncommemorated". I presume that the first line in each case is information in the church burial register, but not sure. No. 1695 Jaffna June 13, 1822 at Jaffna, John Godfried KOCH Esq., lieutenant in the Dutch E.I.
