    3. Hello Larry and Coreen Happy New Year from Canada! What a wonderful adventure you have had researching, and I am eager to take you up on your offer of a look up, the chances of ever finding BMD info from Sri Lanka (Ceylon days) is very slim! 2. Dr Beth Leembruggen-Kallberg
    3. Hi Dylan (love that famous name btw) Yes, I believe I am related to Gerard Leembruggen. I am still trying to get all the Leembruggen connections straightened out in my head. It may take awhile ;-) Yes, my husband is Kallberg--two little letters make a world of difference. He is Norwegian and Swedish, though he looks very Dutch. Or at least I thought so until we were in Norway last week and everyone came up to him speaking Norwegian. We smiled and responded in Dutch ;-) Thanks for writing, Dylan. Canada must be cold now, n'est pas? Beth

    3. Hi Beth, My stepdad is Kalenberg (not Kallberg) and his aunt Rachel married Gerald or Gerard Leembruggen. I can't remember any specific landmarks as with your family's holiday cottage and the area has changed alot since we left. We could see Single Tree from the back of the house-- but then lots of people could probably see that from their back gardens ;-) My cousin went to a boarding school where she could look out her window and see us playing in the garden. Does that help? Interesting that the address still remains Lebanon, NE, Sri Lanka, or so it was until 1994. 3. Yes, Beth. Please give me all you've got from N'Eliya and we can put it together and create a great page that will be linked to the Genealogy site. I was thinking wjhether we should create it on GOOGLEPAGES as a separate site? Let me do a beta and send it across for others to view and respond back before we can finalize it completely. Any titbit about N'Eliya, its places, people, events, memories, landscapes, homes, estates, streets, etc will be welcome. 3. Thanks, Fazli, for sharing this and the info about Ms Nicholas. I was learning that very tune--about the same time in life--on distant shores, an assimulation driven world away. But that's the wonderful thing about culture. "They" can't shame or bully it out of us. For all its short comings, I am happy primary aged children are taught a multi-cultural world view in many countries. We are fighting the Integration v Assimilation battle in NL these days. Our cultural roots are so very important to identity and place in the world, no matter where we end up. (I guess I need to finally publish that dissertation! ;-) Looking forward to the webpage. 1. Re: [SRILANKA] Nuwara Eliya
    2. Muhammad Fazli
    3. Heres a poem titled "Nuwara Eliya" which I wrote last year (2005), remembering the halcyon times we used to spend in those hallowed hills upcountry. It can be sung to the tune of the old negro spiritual, "Carry me back to old Virginy", if any of you still do remember, a tune which the grand old Burgher music teacher, Ms Nicholas, drove into us, hard and strong, at Royal Primary School in the early fifties. God Bless her soul! Fazli ===== Nuwara Eliya Rail me back to Nuwara Eliya, There's where the tea and the pears and berries grow. There's where the streams trickle sweet in the springtime. There's where the mist in the morning hangs low. Drive me round the vast open spaces, There's where the dairy and the meat and veggies grow. There's where the horses neigh snorting in the sunshine. There's where the flowers bloom brightly from their bough. Walk me up old Piduru-tala-gala, There's where the fauna and the wily old fox roams. There's where the rocks are hewn all over nature. There's where true peace reigns calm in our home. Take me down to the lush green Plains. There's where the birds and the bees and fauna go. There's where the world seems to end in its lifetime. There's where the beauty of life seems to flow. I am interested in any memories any of you may have of my connection to Nuwara Eliya.........the house which I have an interest in was called Grimsthorpe, though the last pictures I have of it taken in 2004 were very grim.( I could send the pictures but I believe we are not to post attachments to the list?) It was abandoned and in ruins but who ever owned it and the property were then trying to sell it I was told. This home was the residence of Barbara Layard the youngest daughter of Charles Edward Layard and Barbara Bridgetina (nee Mooyaart) She was the daughter of a Dutch governor and she and Charles had twenty-six children, twenty-two of whom lived to adulthood. Barbara, I am told was quite a well known watercolorist. She never married as far as I know but there is mention of her in several web sites, and in the travel memoirs of Sir Henry Austin Layard and his wife Inid (nee Guest) when they toured Ceylon. 3. Jane, Please send me the pics by email attachment and I will have them uploaded to the Sri Lanka Genealogy Website under a new page that I am working on, titled "Nuwara Eliya - The Little England in Ceylon" which will contain stories f places, people, events, homes, and the beautiful landscapes in Nuwara Eliya. Any information welcome Best wishes to all Jane, Ottawa Ontario, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dr Beth Leembruggen-Kallberg" <ealk@wxs.nl> To: "Prasanna Mendis" <prasman@bigpond.com>; <SRILANKA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2006 6:50 PM Subject: Re: [SRILANKA] Nuwara Eliya > Hi Prasanna and Huge, > > Actually, I know the story of Lebanon well, because it was part of my > family. 3. It's not all that far from the Grand Hotel, down the road a bit, then left, then another left if memory serves. Interesting that the address still remains Lebanon, NE, Sri Lanka, or so it was until 1994. 3. By the way, does Mr Hugh know Uncle Dick? (He was Aurthur Richard Ephraums, hence, Dick to family). I would love to chat with someone who knew him from his time on the island. He also had a brother, Roderik. They were blind piano tuners and had an island-wide business before he immigrated. And yes, the family did own hotels on the island, inherited from Dick's parents. 3. Hi Prasanna and Huge, Actually, I know the story of Lebanon well, because it was part of my family. The property, the houses known as Big Lebanon and Little Lebanon were part of an estate belonging to Dr Harry Leembruggen. His daughter Gladys, married (Arthur) Dick Ephraums--they are my aunt and uncle, now deceased. Both passed away in the US, having immigrated there in the 1950's. Lebanon was left to ,,Aunt Dulcie,, who later sold it to the de Kretser family. I visited the de K's at Lebanon in 1980. Lebanon is now owned by Iris Jayaweera, whom I also met in 1994, unless she has sold it on. There is little book written about the place. It was a quite massive place at one time, or so it seemed to me, with large gardens, etc. I have some wonderful snaps of Harry walking about the lawns, playing with the dogs, the gardener tending to the rose bushes. Lebanon been around for sometime as my father lived there as boy and he will be 90 next year! And my parents spent part of their honeymoon there in 1944. Dick Ephraums indeed owned the NOH in Galle, along with his sister, Nesta Brohier, who died in 1995. It is now owned by a luxury resort complex whose name I forget. They've done it up well. I am sure Aunt Nesta is looking down and smiling, but missing her garden! Thanks for this walk down memory lane! Greetings & best wishes. 3. Greetings from Canada! 3. Where is "Lebanon" located in Nuwara Eliya? Most of my memories are at "Rosy Lodge" where my wifes family had a holiday bungalow right behind where he Cargills Store is right now. The place was later rented to a bank and its sad to see it so dilapidated now with concrete business buldings looming upwards from the flower beds that used to be. Of course, there are good things about the Netherlands and we make the best of our life here. But there's no real substitute for those shared things like N'Eliya, Lanka and that cultural world as it once was, when we lived together in peace. I'm sure I idealise it. 3. Looking to put some spring in your step? Ready for your big break? Look no further. Wild Brush Energy Symbol: WBRS Current Price: Around $0.05 Short Term Target: $0.12 Long Term Target: $0.40 The energy sector is THE place to be, with some energy companies seeing appreciation of 400% or more this year alone! WBRS is involved in some of the most exciting gas plays in North America. It's a proven winner in a red hot market. But that's just the beginning. Rumor has it that there may soon be a merger between WBRS and another major energy player with close ties to the company. In fact this major player's stock was up 50% Friday on strong volume as insiders took positions. We believe that WBRS is looking at the same rapid appreciation. Once the merger is announced there will be a scramble to get in. Play it smart. Take a position BEFORE the announcement and ride this one all the way to the bank! Tell to everyone about this message.Post it on the forum.
