    3. The following list completes the 14 pages of christenings we copied from the Genealogy library, in The Hague. We have put the Father/Mother surname to help with lookups. Most entries have DOB plus Christening date. All have God parents. Where the two parents share the same surname we dont have the means to check that this is correct; and not just a cleric's clerical entry for convenience!! 1815 1 Weerman/Eske 1 Ebert/Estrop 1 Gomes/Gomes 1 Drieberg/Wolff 1 Barber/Turing 1 Ohlmus/Hoffman 1816 1 De Zilva/Janstz 1 Neydorf/Willemsz 1 Kriekenbeek/even du Hill 1 Wille/Pieters 1 Perera/Perera 1 Ebert/Ebert 1 Loos/Fares 1 Koch/Brohier 1818 1 Carron/Nonies 1 Elders/Nonies 1 Schubert/Riphagen 1 Van Beek/Van Beek 1 Ohlmus Hoffman 1823 1 Van Dort/Thuring 1 De Kretzer/Johanna .......thysz 1 Gratiaen/Reckerman 1 Camp/Reimers 1 Drieberg/Flock 1 De Zilva/De Zilva The above 1823 christenings were 1822 births 1 Van Dort/Ke...... 1839 1 Fernando/Paulusz 1 Huybertz/Kern 1 Van Twest/Joseph 1 Ferdinands/Van Cuylenberg 1840 1 Toussaint/Toussaint 1 Piachaud/Piachaud 1 Mottau/Vander Fruilen 1 Van Hagt/Van Hagt 1 Alvis/Raffel 1 De Boer/Kriekenbeek 1 Mack/Barber 1 Bartholomuesz/Bartholomuesz 1 Morris/Christoffelsz 1 Vander Straaten/Pompeus Please note that the above names are only the 14 pages relating to Anderson/Toussaint descendants and ancestors, that we copied . There are about 20 microfiche in good to very poor condition in the collection. The Genealogy Library is on the 1st floor on the far right of the Dutch Archive Building, behind the main rail station at The Hague. In fact you have to walk along the last platform to get into the court yard where the building is. Most staff in the Archives and the Genealogy Society speak English and will help with translation. All care has been taken with transcribing but the photocopies are very poor in most sheet, so any correction to names is most welcome. Larry & Coreen Andresen. Babinda. Qld. Australia.

    3. Dear Larry and Coreen, I was very interested when I saw your message on the Sri Lanka Roots web website as my G.G.Gd-father French Gray married a Dutch Lady (Ursula Mooyaart) there in 1807 and most of his descendants were born there or in Asia until after WWII. Their children Basil (1809), Humphrey (1811), French (My G.Gd-father_1813), Eliza (1815), Sarah (1816) and Caroline (1817) were all born during the period you mention. Although I have dates for them, they are from various sources and there are a few contradictions and I'm not sure whether they are actually dates of birth or Baptism's, so would appreciate any information you may be able to kindly provide. Basil never married. Humphrey (who married Louisa Scarman) had 4 x daughters, Christine (1840), Louisa (?), Eliza (1842) and Eleanor (1844) but I think that they were all born in India. French (2nd) married Susan J Warburton and they had 10 children French W (1841), William (1843-44), William C (1844), Basil (1845), Humphrey (1846), Jane F* (1850), Susan F* (1850), Richard (1851), Cosby W (1853) and James P (My Gd-father_1855). Unfortunately these births are outside the dates you quote, but perhaps somebody else might be kind enough to provide any additional information. * Jane and Susan were twins. Eliza married Major Samuel A Rehe and they had Samuel B E (1834), Eliza A (1834) and Adolphus H J (1838) _ I believe Samuel was born in India. Sarah married Robert Russell MD (1 Feb 1826) and they had four boys Robert W, Thomas O, Frederic C, and George B. But I have no dates for these. Caroline married Henry Smith (A serving Officer on 10th Jan 1833) they had a son Henry B (1835) Any additional information you may be able to provide will be very much appreciated, Many Thanks Richard and Colleen Gray Swansea, S Wales, UK. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry & Coreen Andresen" <larry@qldnet.com.au> To: <srilanka@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 01, 2007 12:32 AM Subject: [SRILANKA] British Ceylon christening records in The Hague >A number of microfiche with christenings from 1804 to 1840 are located > in the Dutch Genealogy Research library room. > Finding these British era records in Holland, was the jewel in the crown > of a round the world research trip that took in > 1. 1. [SRILANKA] Emily Elizabeth de Silva
    2. Dear Larry and Coreen, I was very interested to see that you have been able to do some look-ups. I would be so grateful if you could shed some light for me. I have never had much luck in finding records pertaining to my great-grandmother Emily Elizabeth de Silva (alias Hudson). She would have been born in about 1860 - she had her first children (twins) in 1882. According to family lore, she is supposed to have been the illegitimate daughter of an English planter/businessman named Thomas Hudson and "a local woman" - whether burgher or Sinhalese I have no idea. On one birth cert (the twins')she is given as de Silva; on my grandmother's death cert she is given as Hudson; the legend is that she was left in the care of the de Silvas (with her sister Mary Jane) when Thomas went back to England... but I'm not sure Thomas did go back to England... I don't know if or where or when she was baptised, who her mother was, when she died - I think she died quite young. I know who she married (a soldier named Alfred Ernest Whatmore, who left the army, worked on the railways and died in Colombo in the 30s.) Oh, and at the time she had her twins, they seem to have been living in Cinnamon Gardens... can anybody explain how the family of a railway guard lived in what I gather is and has always been an expensive part of Colombo? I am pretty sure I have tracked down the right Thomas - he seems to have been born in London - but his daughters defy me. Any help appreciated. By the way, can anyone tell me if de Silva is more common as a Burgher name or as a surname used by Sinhalese? Many thanks, Becca Kenneison England.
