Finding these British era records in Holland, was the jewel in the crown of a round the world research trip that took in 1. LDS records and Library in Salt Lake City. 2. The Dutch Archives and Genealogy library in The Hague. 3. The India Office Records, British Library, Newspaper Library, National Archives, and the Society of Genealogists library in England 4. St Stephen's Church, Negombo, and numerous other derelict churches and desecrated cemeteries on the west coast of Sri Lanka. The English/Dutch records showed 2 entries for Anderson, which is our primary research target. One record is directly connected to our family... Captain James Thomas Anderson and Adriana Gertruijda Toussaint. The record is in Dutch, but the following information is clearly decipherable. the child James Robbert ) born 1 month son of James Thomas Anderson and Adriana Gertruijda Toussaint Godparents John Frederick Toussaint , Bernard Hendrik Toussaint, Elisabeth Robertino vander Sprinkel and .........Willemsz Jaffanapatnam Sun 22nd March 1810 Minister signature. J B Palm There was a report of 4 daughters and 2 sons in the Anderson family in Lewis's book, but DBU records only ever showed 1 son. The second Anderson record is for Sophia, daughter of Jame and Susanna Anderson born 2nd Nov 1806. God parents John Prior and Mary Edwards Minister signature ... Cadenski. Trincomale..10 Nov 1806 The records seem to be in a church circuit book which has entries for Jaffna and Trincomale only 1806 records 2 Meeawald 1 Trip 1 Anderson 1807 1 Gilbert 1810 1 Anderson 1814 1 von Conrady 1 Wiltig 1de Silva 1 Stomp 1 van den Driesen 1 Aldons We are willing to do lookups and share information with fellow researchers, and will post further names to the list each week. 3. Dear Larry and Colleen: My interests are Charles and Nancy (nee Leaver) ROBERTS; SCRATCHLEY and O'SHEA: would love to know if there were any christenings in the early part of the period, from 1804 to 1820 for these families. Thank you so much in advance (I already have some details from the Tombstones book). Georgina Hamburg

    3. Hi Jill, I'm just popping in with a clue for you.to find the children who were born prior to James' discharge from he Army.. This is where I found the children of my ordinary soldier..(he wasn't an officer) I see you are in Australia, so you may be able to find the children on the microfiche titled GRO Army Chaplains Returns for Stations Abroad. Births of Children:- Index to certified copies of registers of births (officers, soldiers, & their families) from chaplains to the forces at stations abroad, 1796-1880. Aar - Jed (GRO no F540) - fiche 1 Jef - Wil (GRO no F541) - fiche 2 Wil - Zam (GRO no F542) fiche 3 Children are listed by Surname and Christian name plus.the Regiment of the father, the country in which they were born, and the year of their birth, the Volume Number and page on the GRO Record.. You can then order the certificate from the GRO (or through an agent) like any other Certificate. (Bear in mind that the father may have transferred to different regiments ) I hope I have explained this well enough for you, if not, please get back to me. For marriages.~ ~ The Microfiche are: 6137413 Index to Certified Copies of Registers of Marriages (officers, soldiers & their families) at stations abroad 1796-1955. 1796-1880 (2 fiche GRO nos F1023-F1024). 3. Hi Larry & Coreen, Thanks very much for your kind offer to do look ups. I would very much appreciate it if you could look up the names Davidson, Somerville, McEnery(or similar, maybe McEmerty). My ancestors, James & Isabella Davidson (formerly Somerville went to Ceylon in 1826 with the 78th Seaforth Highland Regiment, after leaving the Regiment in 1831 they lived in Kandy. A son, Martin Davidson lived in Badulla. A daughter, Anne, married a McEnery or McEmerty or similar, they had a child in 1844 (the sex wasn't indicated), I know they had a daughter named Mary Anne but I don't know whether this was the child born in 1844. I believe Anne died before 1848 as a letter from Martin to Jane in 1848 indicated the only surviving family were Jane, Elizabeth & a niece Mary Anne. I believe they were several other children born between 1826 and 1831 to James & Isabella and John and his wife who I think may have been Jane Somerville. My grt grandmother Jane & her sister Elizabeth came to Melbourne in 1848 after the death of their father in 1848. James also had a brother John who also went to Ceylon with the 78th Regiment, he also had at least 2 sons, John & James. James died in Badulla in 1876 and John's wife was living with her sister and brother-in-law Mr & Mrs R.L. Crofton (Coffee Planter) "Hoskelle" Badulla. If anyone has any further info regarding these families and Hoskelle Estate at Badulla, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. James had a connection with an estate named something like "Byrokandy" at Kandy and some land on which Army Barracks were built at a later date (I understand they may have been named the Davidson Barracks. Does anyone know "Byrokandy or of any Army Barracks at Kandy or Badulla?? James also had a new house, which was completed in 1844, built in Trimcomalee Rd, Kandy. Does anyone know of any records where I could find the exact address of the house and whether it is still standing?. I intend visiting Sri Lanka later this year and would like to try to locate the properties. James was noted as a Government Contractor on Jane's birth & death certificates, are there any existing official records of government contractors? We have a Gmail Ac which we have never used and have other goodies from our research that we would like to put up for listers to refer to at will. In anticipation Coreen& Larry.
