I tried the front door policy but not the National Records office as they never answer any Emails, not sure why they even have an Email address! However, if you know the church the family belonged to, it is possible to find records through this avenue. I contacted the Church of England Bishop of Sri Lanka and had joy with a marriage for my Great Grandparents. Nancy, I have two Ceylon births in 1868 and 1871 because my family was military (Black Watch). Let me warn you right now that it is next to impossible to get birth records out of Ceylon. I work at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and we don't even have them. I am trying to go through the back door to get these two birth records but I have been warned that the records are probably sitting (if they are even around) in a back hall rotting and the locals' pockets are "very deep" if you get my drift. Hope that helps. Hello, I'm trying to find a marriage for William Jefferies (Jeffreys) & Mary O'Brien and a birth for their first daughter Mary. William was English, Mary was born in Limerick Ireland, daughter Mary born Point de Galle, Ceylon about 1846/7. They had returned to England by 1849. Does anyone have them in their tree? Any ideas what would have taken them to Ceylon for only a few years? Dear Larry and Coreen, My belated thanks for the information you have given me on Arthur Warburton Gray and James Gray. Unfortunately I have been involved with some decorating and at my age what used to take me days now takes me weeks (Doesn't get any easier.) and I have amassed a pile of unanswered e-mail. I already have the information on Arthur Warburton thanks, which was kindly given by Kyle Joustra in 2002, the James Gray you mention, however, does not appear to be related as the nearest James I have on my database was born in Ceylon on 6 May 1879 and died there on 12 Dec 1904. Thanks for the information anyway. Much appreciated. An interesting article that appeared in the Sri Lanka Sunday Times on January 18, 2006 pertaining to CE Belleth and his cricket playing days at Royal College, Colombo. Thomians win after 8 years This is another one in the long line of 124 matches played, that goes down as a special. In this there are many achievements that have gone unnoticed till recently. The records go as: a) Last Man Top Scorer P. Amaradasa (for Royal) b) Record 10th Wicket Partnership for Royal - P. Amaradasa-C.E. Belleth c) T.E. Tweed 1921/22 Royal Thomian - In Two Winning Teams Two successive years (d) E.C. Rose Highest Scorer in match - in 2 matches (1919/20 - Series record and Highest Scorer for Royal (2nd Innings for Royal). A record not emulated during the past 80 years. I picked the 1922 match to remember the Last Man Top Scorer for Royal - P. Amaradasa, his record was not mentioned for nearly 40 yers. Also his 10th wicket record partnership also took the same time to mention. Amaradasa did not hail from cricketing stock but his performances with both bat and ball for 3 years shows his ability. Before going further I would like to mention his bowling performances (as opening bowler 3 years)- See Annex (A) Amaradasa conceding just 197 runs in 126 overs - 8.2 runs per wkt and conceding less than 2 runs per over. It is not his bowling but the10th wkt. partnership that got the prominence - the partner C.E. Belleth too had been left out, till about the 1969. They put 54 runs for the 10th wkt. C.E Belleth was a keen student of cricket. My former Master Belleth is mentioned as the HERO of the 1922 match in the newspapers as he scored 17,21, took 3 for 49 and 4 for 24. In the 2nd innings too Amaradasa and Belleth put on 25 runs for the 10th wkt. ( So we have two heroes in the match). The 3rd was E.C. Rose Royal opening batsman in 1919/24, 22runs in the match.,1920/28 and in 1921/33 - the highest scorer for Royal in 2nd innings. These were top batting efforts - as opening batsmen. In 1919 - 1920 Rose was top scorer in the 3 successive matches. There was a 4th man Tom Tweed who got his name in. He was in the winning Royal team of 1921 and the winning Thomian Team of 1922! Tweed in 1926 was at Cambridge University and won his Blue for Athletics. Tweed opened batting and bowling for S. Thomas'. Would Tweed has made a good M.P. in the new era? Thomian captain C.E.L de Silva wrote that he quite often faced defeat (1920 & 1921) as a player "now my turn to captain" and he led his team to a fine win. Royal according to reports were a poor combination led by M.C. Dias. In the course of wirting on Amaradasa's effort I mentioned my former master Belleth -17 and 21 (54 runs for 10th wkt) & 25 runs. for 10th (both with Amaradasa) - 3/49 and 4 for 24(7 for 72) in bowling. It was Mr. Belleths' debut year. He was a keen student of the game. In later years he coached the Royal College team and was games master (The Umpires in 1922 match were Mr. L.V. Gooneratne and Dr. J.A. Scharenguwel). In later life Mr. Amaradasa was known as Dr. A. Rahapalor. I believe he served the Colombo Municipality. Larry and Coreen, Thank you for the information about the Wait's in the "Ceylon Book". It may be a possible link. I also found the following: Pages 421 to 424 of Ferguson's Ceylon Directory for 1884 has some notes on 'Old Ceylon Colonists'. In it Geo Wait is quoted as follows: "I arrived in Ceylon by the good ship 'URGENT' in 1844, and I have never been out of it except about a fortnight in Southern India in 1848 engaging coolies. The passage round the Cape of Good Hope occupied four months. The only incident in the voyage worthy of note is that we came in amongst a number of icebergs. I saw ten around the ship from the foretop, I was the only one of the passengers that ventured up that length, as the ship was under double reefed topsails pitching forecastle under. We crossed the longitude of the Cape five hundred miles to the Southward.Out of the ten passengers viz Ralph Tatham, Mr David Bell and his brother John, John Campbell, A. Hood (the Colonel) Drummond, A. H. Cleland, H. Barnes, A. Dewar and self, all are dead except Mr Tatham and your humble servant.I have kept my health remarkably well, and at present I am as yauld as a two year auld." Geo Wait. I am looking for the A.H. Cleland, also a planter, maybe the husband of Martha Wait, George's sister. By 1861 Martha, a widow, was back in Edinburgh. Her husband, Alexander, must have died in Ceylon. If you find anything about him, I would appreciate it. Sam Wait --

I remember a C.E.Belleth who taught me at Royal College, Colombo 7 during the period 1959-66. He was a teacher at Royal for a very long time since he also taught my Dad during the period 1925-1932. He was also the Master in Charge of the Hostel during the period 1959-66. His son leon Belleth was an English announcer at Radio Ceylon. I have a picture, taken in 1959, of the man (C E Belleth) seated (in jacket and tie) with the hostel boys in the center on the left of the lady who is his wife. His son Leon is seated on the same row on the extreme left of the pic. Hi! Has anybody got a photo of the Memorial to the Ceylon Mounted Infantry. I am researching the Thomas family. Lt. Arthur Henri Thomas was killed in 1900 in Bultfontein, South Africa. His father Matthew Henri Thomas, who was a planter in Ceylon, was instrumental in founding the Ceylon Mounted Infantry who fought in the Boer war. The Ceylon Contingent Memorial: This memorial was erected opposite the 'Mahamaluwa' (Esplanade) in commemoration of the services of the Ceylon Contingent in South Africa, 1900 - 1902 and unveiled by Field Marshal H. R. H. the Duke of Connaught, K. G., G. C. M. G. March 18, 1907." In memoriam - Lieut. Arthur A. Thomas, W. Max Kelly, C. Campion, Q. M., St. Cheyne, A. S. Hopper, K. Hamilton, Claude C. Bell, N. W. Smellie. This Memorial was designed by Mrs. Thomas, wife of Edward Hector Le Marchant Thomas, a brother of Lieutenant Thomas. It represents a trooper of the Ceylon Mounted Infantry giving the signal 'enemy is in sight.' This statue was pulled down in an undergraduate protest in the 1960's and never re-instated. Now this Memorial is kept in the compound of the Military Headquarters in Kandy. Any help in locating a picture would be most appreciated!
