    1. [SRILANKA] FINDING HEIC and other records AT LDS
    2. Gay Fielding
    3. I have saved the following instructions, given to me by an LDS member many years ago...I hope it helps others on the list.. I do not have any personal interest in EIC information but I have seen there is a lot on the LDS catalogue . 1. First go to the LDS site: http://www.familysearch.org/ . On the right hand side of the screen you will find several options.. >From those options select Family History Library Catalog a.. Click on the Family History Library Catalog (don't worry, you can check out some of the others later!) 4. When the FHLC screen comes up you will be given 3 search options. Now comes the fun - it is easy to miss finding a category of records by searching under 'wrong' or just 'different' criteria. Try these: a) All searches - Author - India_Office - Accountant General's Department b) Place - India - (eg) Military records - Indexes c) Place - Great Britian (&/or England) - then a subject, eg Military Records etc 5. Each search method will bring up a different list of continuation options. For example, a) above will bring up another list including pension records. wills indexes, click on the one you want. At each stage of the search a new screen with catalogue information and clickable links will pop up. 6. When the catalogue information screen is arrived at, there will usually by a clickable tab on the top right of the main frame which says: "View Film Notes". Click on this and you will then get a list of all the film numbers and brief description of what is contained on the film. You now have all the info needed to order a film for viewing at your local LDS Family History Centre. Of course, you didn't need to read the above waffle past item 3. as full instructions for using the Catalog are shown in the right frame as you progress through the site. Secondly, most (?all) LDS FHCs should have the Catalog available both on CD ROM and on microfiche (there are 3 fiche making up the India catalogue and they are good for a browse!!) Good luck and happy searching.

    2. Thank you, Jane, for your speedy reply about Baptist Records. I'm very humbled by how helpful everyone is on this website. I have the good fortune to live in London, & am currently trying to find an opportunity to go to the British Newspaper Library, so will be happy to share any Ceylon nuggets with all subscribers. 3. Gay, I have recently been to the British Library a few times, looking for records of my great-great grandfather, who was in the Royal Irish Regiment in India (before the mutiny). also for his father, who was employed by the HEIC in London! I managed to find quite a lot of information. However, a lot of HEIC records were destroyed when they ceased to be, in 1860! The staff are very helpful. However, Ceylon was never part of the HEIC 'empire', it was 'ruled' by the Colonial office and all their records are at the National Archives at Kew! 3. Hi Georgina, You lucky thing, you live much closer to the GRO than I and many others on the list. I live in Australia but can still get the certificates from the GRO without leaving my hometown. I was not suggesting you do this research at the GRO The microfiche of Army Records have been filmed by LDS and are available at many LDS centres and Family History societies. The closest centre to you is at Hamburg Germany Wartenau 20 Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany Phone: 49-40-250-4573 Hours: T, Th 14:00-18:45; Sa 9:00-14:00, and by appointment Just pop in and ask if they have those Microfiche available. If not, and they are an LDS product, you can either order them in, or buy the particfular microfiche yourself, from the LDS .I have given you the details in an earlier email..of which fiche you need. but they can find them in their catlogue which is online at www.familyseach.org Just go to keyword search, code in Great Britain - Civil Registration - Indexes. There are various indexes there, for Army records of dfferent events such as Marriages, Deaths...but if it is births that you want.. Then scroll down until you reach the 29th record Index to certified copies of registers of marriages (officers, soldiers & their families ... at stations abroad, 1796-1955 and you will find the records of the 3 microfiche I told you about.. You said, > microfiche - how does one use them? I have no idea.< I am sure someone at anyone of the LDS centres or libraries where you might visit will show you how to handle the microfiche to read them..if that's what you meant(They ar not frightening) . I hope you no longer feel at a loss....I am not a member of the LDS, but you will find they are very helpful in helping you further your family research. LDS have also filmed some records of EIC Army...which can be found on their catalogue.. I have some information on EIC..and I will dig around my files anf find it and send it to you in a seperate email. 1. Re: [SRILANKA] Dutch Reformed Church records
    2. Vic
    3. I do not know about the Dutch Reform Church or Baptist Church but here is a thought based on the Church of England. My Great Grandfather was a minister who worked for the Church Missionary Society and was posted to Ceylon. The Church Missionary Society has archived all their data; annual reports and personal data at Birmingham University and I was able to contact the archivist there and get copies for a minimal price.........she even digitally took pictures of the book that held a few of his annual reports. This also included his application to the Missionary Society and letters written on his behalf as reference, and the exam he wrote to enter the school of theology. All in his own hand! My thinking is, if all these records have been kept by the Church of England and archived in England, perhaps the other churches also kept records. I went to the Church of England web site, went to the contact us section and posed my questions. Surely the other churches have web sites: So Dutch Reformed has changed with time but perhaps this history will tell where to look for records, or where they may be archives in Holland: Dutch Reformed Church - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Dutch Reformed Church was the main successor to the congregations which came into ... The Dutch Reformed Church remained the largest church body in the ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Reformed_Church - 29k - Cached - Similar pages This one gives contact info for Christian Churchs in Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka Christian Baptist Church - Dharmapla Mawatha, Sri Lanka - 713890 Catholic St. Lawrence's Church - 581549 St Mary's Church - 588745 St Philip Neri's Church - 421367 ... across.co.nz/SriLankaChristian.html - 31k - Cached - Similar pages .........and here is another thought. If you cannot find the one you are looking for, perhaps you can ask one of the other churches that does provide Email contact info to help you make contact with the other church. In most cases I have found the church secretaries are wonderful at helping.......the vicars themselves are often too busy! At least they offer advise as to where one might go for assistance. My relatives were mostly British Civil Servants so I am hoping that BMD were registered in England. Fingers crossed. Hope this helps Jane -- Original Message ----- From: <rozmccutcheon@lineone.net> To: <srilanka@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2007 8:47 AM Subject: [SRILANKA] Dutch Reformed Church records > While on the subject just raised by Peter Goggin, - can I raise the > same query for Baptist Church records? > > Cheers, Roz McCutcheon > > > > > > ___________________________________________________________ > > Tiscali Broadband only £9.99 a month for your first 3 months! > http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/broadband/ > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > SRILANKA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hello Gay, What a wealth of information, thanks very much, I've printed it all out. My problem is that my Point de Galle and thereabouts relations were not British army but attached to a EIC regiment, 2nd Ceylon Regt. Does anyone have experience of looking for vital statistics for such people? I do know that Georgiana Margaret ROBERTS was born in Point de Galle in 1808 and that her father Charles William Lewis ROBERTS died in Hambantota or Tangalle (burial place) in 1816. But there were seven other living children and their mother Nancy Hamilton ROBERTS - who has totally disappeard into the sands of time. I did have a look in the 1837 site (now Find my Past), but no luck. And to reveal my complete ignorance: these fiches you mention are presumably microfiche - how does one use them? I have no idea. My other problem is that I live in Germany, so far from GRO/National Archives: without specific dates/data I can't expect much help from there. Maybe I will have to invest in a researcher - any advice most welcome. Feeling rather stuck in a cul-de-sac! Georgina in Hamburg

    3. Inquiry: My mother, Theodora 'Dolly' Smith (nee Nugawela), was born in Kandy on 5th April, 1901 and died in Thetford, Norfolk, England on 5th December 1979. She had an older sister, Felicia 'Tita' Ranabahu (nee Nugawela), and a step sister, Joyce, whose Father was Walter ?. My Grandmother (nee Spencer) was first married to Mr. Nugawela who I was told died around 1905. My Grandmother had two older brothers, Sydney Spencer and Percy Spencer. I have information on the Spencer family. My youngest sister, Beryl Joyce Smith, was born on 20th December 1932 and died in Thetford, Norfolk on 12th December 2002. My eldest sister, Christobelle Theodora Smith, was born on 22nd October 1927 and died in Colombo in 1940. She is buried in Kanatte Cemetery (Methodist Section) and I have always hoped that I could ask someone to find her grave. Aunty Tita attended her funeral. I cannot remember the exact date that Christobelle died; the gravestone would confirm this if it still exists after nearly 70 years. Aunty Tita was married to Sam Ranabahu who had two children called Dudley and Sheila. I wish I could remember my Grandparents' first names and Uncle Walter's (step Grandpa) surname. My family left Ceylon in 1947 on the troopships ss Lancashire and the Empire Trooper. Dudley Ranabahu and I were very interested in aircraft and I wonder what Dudley did; I served in the Royal Air Force before working in the aircraft industry and Manchester University. I hope you can make sense of what I have written as I tend to drift away from the main theme. Thanks, Dr. Morris Smith (UK) Morris Smith <morris.smith@claribel.com > Dec 28 2005: I am trying to find out about my grandmother Felicia 'Tita' Ranabahu. Her maiden name was Nugawela. She had a sister named Beryl who lived somewhere in England & a stepsister named Joyce de Silva. My grandmother passed away in 1986 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I would appreciate if anyone can give me more information on her family history. Thanks, Sharmini Feb 19 2007 Hello Sharmini, My Mother, Theodora 'Dolly' Smith (nee Nugawela) had a sister called Tita Ranabahu. She was married to Sam Ranabahu; they had two children called Dudley and Sheila. My family left Ceylon for England in 1947. 2. Nancy/Margo, I have a military birth in my ancestry in Sri Lanka in 1836 (a son of my gg-grandfather who was there serving in the Royal Irish Regiment!) I found the birth in the 'chaplains returns' index at the Family Record Centre in London, and ordered a birth certificate there and then. There is also an 'army birth, marriages and deaths index) As you're in the USA you can go to <www.findmypast.com> and search the same indexes on-line. If you find a reference for the name you can then order a certificate online from the General Register Office website. Sorry, dont know the web address, try googling for it! 1. [SRILANKA] Births Deaths and Marriages in SriLanka
    2. Gay Fielding
    3. Hi Christine and others... Just in case the BDM events were for British soldiers stationed in Ceylon at the time...I will recap on my earlier message to Margo. "Army Chaplains Records of BDMs for Stations Abroard." These are GRO records for the British Army. They are an index of events for British soldiers, and they give you the index details to allow you to write to the GRO now the National Archives UK and obtain the birth Certificate... The microfiche you would need are for Births of Children:- Index to certified copies of registers of births (officers, soldiers, & their families) from chaplains to the forces at stations abroad, 1796-1880. Aar - Jed (GRO no F540) - fiche 1 Jef - Wil (GRO no F541) - fiche 2 Wil - Zam (GRO no F542) fiche 3 There are lots of other fiche such as for Marriages and Deaths... The full set of fiche are:- . G.R.O. Army Regimental Registers of Births and marriages 1761-1924, and deaths 1796-1987.There are several series, some of them overlapping, with an uncertain amount of duplication & omission. The name, place, year and regiment are required to carry out a conclusive search. These relate to events in U.K. and abroad. 2. 3. Hi Margo... ..I don't know if you would have them at LDS in Salt Lake City, because I thought they were an LDS filming of GRO records, but I sure you would be able to get them somewhere, and that is the "Army Chaplains Records of BDMs for Stations Abroard." These are GRO records for the British Army. These relate to events in U.K. and abroad. 2. 1. [SRILANKA] Giving Birth at Point de Galle........
    2. Christine Miller
    3. Hello Listers, It seems that Point de Galle was a place where lots of people were born [including my G Grandfather] in 1847/8. Was this by chance, or were the facilities better there? Was there perhaps an Army hospital that people headed for? I'd also be very interested generally, in 'how it would have been' for someone having their baby in Ceylon in those years. Cheers. Christine.

    3. Hello Jane, You're quite right about no replies from the records office in Sri Lanka. Over the past few years I've emailed & also written several 'proper letters' to them, with no response at all. My G Grandfather was born there in 1847/8 [Point de Galle] and I would love to find his birth record in order to find out who his Mother was. My G G Grandfather was a planter, which makes it even more difficult. Would appreciate a contact address for the Bishop if you still have it. Best wishes, Christine Jane wrote - >I tried the front door policy but not the National Records office as they > never answer any Emails, not sure why they even have an Email address! > However, if you know the church the family belonged to, it is possible to > find records through this avenue. 3. Re Church of England Bishop contact information, I am sorry I do not have the Email address any longer as it was lost when my hard drive crashed last year, however, all I did was go to the Church of England web site and then to the contact us page below......I then sent an Email requesting the name and Email address for the Bishop of Sri Lanka.......I was answered by his secretary who did the search for me and then mailed a hard copy of the information I was seeking. http://www.cofe.anglican.org/contact/ I hope this helps Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christine Miller" <chrismiller@forestcats.freeserve.co.uk> To: <srilanka@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 05, 2007 5:37 PM Subject: Re: [SRILANKA] Jefferies & O'Brien 1840s > Hello Jane, > > You're quite right about no replies from the records office in Sri Lanka. > Over the past few years I've emailed & also written several 'proper > letters' > to them, with no response at all. > > My G Grandfather was born there in 1847/8 [Point de Galle] and I would > love > to find his birth record in order to find out who his Mother was.
