Thanks for your message, Camilla. You write that BMD records are difficult to come by. Do you know of any genealogical researchers in Sri Lanka who might help to find such records? I've looked at the British Overseas death indexes at www.findmypast.com to no avail. all the best, Stephen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Camilla Barlow" <ceebee123@swiftdsl.com.au> To: <srilanka@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 2:01 PM Subject: Re: [SRILANKA] William Small > Hi Stephen > Ceylon was a colony until abt 1948. William Small was my wife's grandfather. He was an architect in Colombo in the 1930s, and designed the Times Building. I believe his Arcitectural practice was called 'Adam & Small'. He was killed in a car accident in 1935 (I think). Can anyone please advise how I might go about getting some more information about his life and death? Would there be a death certificate available, as they are in the UK? If so what is the method of getting a copy. Would there have been a coroner's inquest, and if so might there still be a report available? Are there any Architectural magazines etc that might have included articles about his work? Can anybody recommend any avenue of enquiry that might lead to more information, please? I realise it's a lot to ask, but I would be extremely grateful for any help anyone might offer. Stephen Greatorex.
Thank you very much for your offer Margo, and really no hurry whenever you have time if you can peek at the films. I have to commend the LDS center and your colleagues because also Gerda Bals and Susan Wilhelm helped me very efficiently in 2004, but alas I am stuck for a reply from Sri Lanka already a long time. I am looking for "Correspondence of the Colombo Consistory with The Netherlands (outward), 1721-1798. The film numbers are 1495578 item 5 and 1495579 items 1-4. In the above I am in particular looking for Wilhelm Buultjens (1715 - 03 Jan 1791) his wife (or wives) Elizabeth Adriaansz (1739 – 22 May 1829) they married in 1779 in Galle. The strange thing is that Wilhelm arrived in 1746 in Galle and only in 1779 I have that marriage date for him with Elizabeth. However, the 4 children listed for him have early birth dates and I think Elizabeth was a second or third wife. Johanna, born? – died 7 Feb 1832 Maria, born 28th March 1765 – died 7 May 1824 Hendrik, born 27 March 1770 – died 15 Nov 1817 Dirk, born 1777 christened 23 Apr 1777 – died 24 Mar 1811, married unknown wife(wives) I am interested in the offspring of Hendrik and mostly of Dirk (my branch). I would like to know if there are genealogy notes on the above films (b – m – d data) or just church minutes like you can see on website: http://www.aecg.evtheol.lmu.de/cms/index.php?id=10 which are the Minutes of the Consistory of the Dutch Reformed Church in Colombo Held at the Wolvendaal Church, Colombo 1735–1796 Translated by S. A. W. Gay, Yes, in answer to both questions! I remain convinced that I have to look for a marriage in this country (UK). I will start with Manchester (where the eldest child, that I am aware of, was born) and work backwards from there! I have in my possession a book 'The history of the Royal Irish Regiment,, which, in an appendix, gives a chronological diary of the location of the regiment! There's a lot of possible parishes to cover so I suspect it will keep me busy! Thanks again and thanks also to Camilla and Jennifer for their suggestions! Jennifer, I work here at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. If you can pinpoint the film you need, I would be happy to crank it. I don't have a lot of time to do the research end but can snatch some time to look at a film for you. Just let me know - no time limit - in fact, I'm in school right now so later would be better for me. Also, on www.nationalarchives.gov.uk in "Search archives" and then "The Catalogue", search your soldier's name and WO97 as the entire database for WO97 is on the web. From that reference, I may be able to find a film here for you as well unless you have all his soldiering information already. Hi Camilla, I wish that I had the LDS library here in Israel but they dont have a center here and so I cannot order the films, besides their pages were difficult to follow for me as they are listed in in different subjects or listings, that is why I made the file. Strange, I have the whole excel file in the computer and all the lines which are in blue go automatically to the LDS page of that file and back again when I click on "back". Goodness me! This is a hard way to go. By the way it doesn't take you back to the LDS library. Surely it is easier to go to the Library yourself and search for what you want. I didn't reply on my behalf. I was trying to help Christopher. I am very familiar with the LDS and Sri Lanka research. Camilla, Thanks, Yes, that's something 'on the list' to do! Of ourse, I'm going to have to work backwards looking for a marriage in all the places the regiment was stationed. Gay, Thanks again. Yes, the Ionian islands records are amongst the military, overseas, and other miscellaneous records at the GRO. Unfortunatley, Mary died in India in 1852 and is buried there! The fact that there is no mention of his marriage on his WO97 is further evidence, I think, that he was already married. I will keep digging. Thanks again Chris Thanks again ----- Original Message ----- From: Gay Fielding <gayze@tpg.com.au> To: <srilanka@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 07, 2007 9:12 PM Subject: Re: [SRILANKA] Richard FORD > Hi Chris, > Fortunately, you live in Britain, where most of the records are so much more > accessible than they are for List members such as myself (Australia) and > others from various other countries. > I am glad you have the WO97 for your ggrandfather...such an invaluable > document for your family history...Apparently it does not show a marriage. > My soldier ancestor enlisted earlier than yours and his Marriage is noted on > his WO97., but I believe his marriage was "'with permission" . > Perhaps your marriage (if there was one during service) was without > permission and therefore would not have been noted. > You have said the Ionian Islands have their own BMDs, however I am quite > sure , when I was searching for my own records...I have seen on the index > for Army Chaplains BMDs for Stations Abroad, some records for Ionia..but I > could be wrong. > I suppose you have checked to see whether the 1861 Census or the 1871 or > any, show the birthplace of Mary. > Apart from those avenues, I am at a loss. > Gay > > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "christopher.merry" <christopher.merry@ntlworld.com> > To: <srilanka@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, April 08, 2007 2:50 AM > Subject: Re: [SRILANKA] Richard FORD > > > > Gay, > > > > Thank you very much for replying. Hi Why don't you try for the marriage certificate in the LDS films of Manchester. If you know the area or church it should not be too difficult. If they married in Ceylon that makes it difficult if not impossible. Just find your nearest LDS centre and they will help you. All the information is available at www.familysearch.com You need to go to the Library section to find the film number. You will be able to get a baptism certificate as well. Hi Chris, Fortunately, you live in Britain, where most of the records are so much more accessible than they are for List members such as myself (Australia) and others from various other countries. I am glad you have the WO97 for your ggrandfather...such an invaluable document for your family history...Apparently it does not show a marriage. My soldier ancestor enlisted earlier than yours and his Marriage is noted on his WO97., but I believe his marriage was "'with permission" . Perhaps your marriage (if there was one during service) was without permission and therefore would not have been noted. You have said the Ionian Islands have their own BMDs, however I am quite sure , when I was searching for my own records...I have seen on the index for Army Chaplains BMDs for Stations Abroad, some records for Ionia..but I could be wrong. I suppose you have checked to see whether the 1861 Census or the 1871 or any, show the birthplace of Mary. Apart from those avenues, I am at a loss. Hi Chris, If you know about the Army births at the GRO, then you most probably know about the Army Marriages at GRO, by Army Chaplains at Stations Abroad. Getting the marriage Certificate (perhaps for each of the Richard FORDs), may be the only way to find out what Mary's surname may be... My Army births at the GRO Certificates for the children of my Ancestor show only the name of the father and first name of the mother... but the Marriage Certificate shows her full name..(but nothing else about her) Perhaps this may be useful to you, The website www.regiments.org, shows that 11th Regiment of Foot is the Numeric title for The Royal Irish Regiment.. There is One surviving record for a Richard Ford of the Royal Irish Regiment, at the GRO. The piece Number is WO 97/387/20 for RICHARD FORD Born STEPNEY, London and Middlesex Served in 18th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 47. Gay, Thank you very much for replying. Unfortunately I suspect they married in this country (UK). Richard joined the regiment on 11th December 1830 (aged 23), and was immediately sent to the Ionian islands (where the regiment was stationed at that time). In February 1832 the regiment returned to England. There is a child (George) born in Manchester (when the regiment was stationed there) in 1834. (i.e. just before BMD registration started - so there is only a baptism entry and these rarely state mother's maiden surname!) In November 1836 the regiment embarks for Ceylon! Ergo I would say that the marriage took place in the UK (or possibly the Ionian islands - but they have their own BMD records and I can't find a marriage!) The baptism record for the child of the 'other' Richard Ford, at Trincomalee, gives the parent's marriage details, not just the mother's maiden name. They married in London (Hampstead). Of the other possibilities I have found on the IGI, I strongly suspect the one at Chatham (in 1829), but of course, ! can't prove it! The WO entry that you refer to is my gg-grandfather, and I already have a copy of this entry! Thank you for taking the time to reply! Everybody/Anybody, I have hit a stumbling block and I would be grateful for any advice/assistance: I have a great-great grandfather - Richard FORD - who was an Armourer Sergeant in the Royal Irish Regiment. He was stationed in Ceylon in the late 1830's for a couple of years. He appears to have had his wife with him (this was not uncommon apparently!). I know that her first name was Mary. I would like to research her line of ancestry back further but the problem I have is that I don't know her maiden surname. I have found a number of marriages on the IGI between a Richard Ford and a Mary ????, at about the right time, including one in Chatham ,Kent (which is where he sailed from), but, without knowing Mary's maiden surname, I can't be certain of the correct one. To complicate matters further there appears to be another Richard Ford in the regiment at at his time who was also married to a Mary!!! He was also a sergeant (although just a plain sergeant). One piece of positive information I have is that my Richard and Mary had a son - Richard John Ford - , born in Colombo on August 23rd 1837. I have the birth certificate (from the Army births at the GRO). Frustratingly, this certificate is different from the usual English birth certificate and does not give the mother's maiden surname! I was wondering if there might be a record of his baptism in Colombo which might just mention Mary's maiden name? All suggestions gratefully received! I should add that I also have the baptism record for a daughter to plain 'Sergeant' Richard Ford, in Trincomalee, which gives the mother's maiden name, but I am reasonably certain that this is the other Richard Ford! Hi Jane I am sorry to disappoint you but as "Ceylon" was an English colony the BDM's are in Sri Lanka. Church records are probably a bit easier to access, not much though. The GRO in England only has BDM's when they had diplomatic relations with a country. I was in Sri Lanka in 2005. I found some Church records. I was told they would send me copies. I left self addressed envelope, more money than requested and in spite of 2 letters I am still waiting for my copies. Unfortunately my camera was broken so was unable to take pics. Dear Gay Thanks a million for all the mountains of information - even if what Christopher Merry said may be true, there are some sources which might overlap with Ceylon. At least I hope so! Anyway the basic info about how to attack the LDS is v useful, I am planning to visit them next week. Georgina
