    3. Hi, Your grandfather may have studied at the Government Technical College which started in Colombo in 1893 and later became known as the Ceylon Technical College or he may served as an apprentice in a engineering establishment with part time release to study engineering at the GTC. Engineering is still taught in Sri Lanka today at the University of Peradeniya and University of Moratuwa (previously known as the Institute of Practical Technology). Hope this information is of use to you. 3. Hi Julian, I don't know how much digging you want to do, or if this list contains the historical information you need, but http://www.lankalinksystems.com/directory/frames/eduframe.htm lists more than 100 universities, colleges, educational institutes in Lanka. Obviously some you can skip, but it might be a start for your search at the older, established institutions. 3. Julian, there are two entries for Davidson in Tombstones and Monuments in Ceylon..one is an Alexander, have you seen them? Do you know what church the Andrew Alexander Davidson / Jane Caroline de Haan wedding in 1849 was in ? We have the volume and page reference for it but to get the entry is nigh on impossible from Colombo and there are a few LDS films which are specific in naming the church. 1. [SRILANKA] passenger lists
    2. Larry & Coreen Andresen
    3. Karen, there are a few of lines of enquiry to compensate for lack of passenger lists to Ceylon . We are presuming you are looking at the Engliosh period 1797 to 1848 or later...All persons into the East Indies had to have permission from the Colonial Office. The files are CO 412 / 194, 5 and 6 and are in the British Archives at Kew. There are also passenger lists in the the Indian and Ceylon archived newspapers at Kew and Colindale. There are Embarkation films for ships to India, available from the LDS , But you have to know which ship, or year to get a near miss or hit. Some Australian passenger lists name people embarking in India too and we also had ships from Australia to Ceylon and India, Lachlan McQuarrie and his Regiment, took the port of Galle from the Dutch. He was appointed Governor of Galle and was also a very humane, and mostly forgotten, Governor of Australia. What names and approx year are you looking at ? Coreen and Larry

    3. Coreen&Larry, I don't know how you fathom the mysteries of these films for Sri Lanka. Thank you for remembering my early request. I see you say they are the Marriage Banns you will be looking at...Thank you for this.... I had no idea that St Philip Neri's church was Roman Catholic but that follows because, family lore says that after Archibald Campbell retired from teaching at Royal College Colombo, he took up a post as a teacher at the Catholic College Colombo..I have not been able to identify the name of that college, despite lots of research. My interest in this marriage, apart from it being for a family member, is to identify the occupation of the Groom's father after he left Australia in 1861 to go to Ceylon. I have no other way of finding out... Is there also some record of an Actual Marriage Certificate for Sri Lankan marriages. I had given up all hope of ever finding a copy of this marriage Certificate. The searches I have made of films, I was just paddling in the water, not knowing where I was going or how to get there...It was just utterly confusing for me Thank you such a lot... Will you be doing printouts?. I am happy to reimburse you for the costs of hiring the film, and printout including postage. Thanks a lot Gay ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry & Coreen Andresen" <larry@qldnet.com.au> To: <srilanka@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 07, 2007 11:16 AM Subject: [SRILANKA] Campbell research etc > Gay and list, will be looking at films again tomorrow night. Just to confuse us all St Philip Neris Church was, and still is Roman Catholic, It seems RC Colombo marriage banns are not listed separately. A quick look at my films last week showed complete marriage entries for the list researchers Anderson-Ohlmus. van Dort- Poulier van Twest-Quyn Weinman- Garth Mortier-Wilson Melder- Lemphers Periera-Passe we will try and list as many as possible to post later in the week. Cheers Coreen&Larry.

The Malay was deported to Batavia and a court of his fellow chiefs found Madugalle guilty. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and the confiscation of his goods, but Brownrigg released him at the time of the 1817 Perahera.
