Am much enjoying the recent activity re Sri Lanka! I'm hoping to get to Kew shortly, where I understand there are copies of the Colombo Journal 1832-33. Does anyone know if the BMDs have already been extracted from these? If not, I'd be happy to do this for all entries. The British Library has copies of the Colombo Observer from 1838. Does anyone know where I can access earlier copies? For my own research, I'm seeking fuller details of the Clark family. Jessie Selina Clark married Christopher Elliott on 18 Jan 1836. Christopher was editor of the Colombo Observer. I know Jessie was born in 1807, but have no idea in what part of the world. Her father was a merchant, probably born in Dunoon, Scotland. I tried the site that Ann has suggested. I subscribed and followed the directions, but it just took me round and round in circles, taking me back to the search page every time I tried to access the "Free" Alpha Break-up for the 19th century records that I KNOW are on the Index. Births Abroad seem only to be for the period 1966 to 1994 I know it would not be my settings, and I also think that www.findmypast.com is much better value. I suggested the Microfiche version because I see that Ed is in Australia.. It would have been good searching Ann...:-)) Good Luck Ed.. Hi Ed, If your William Rowlands was born to parents who may have come with the the British armed forces to Ceylon, you may find an index to his Birth in the . GRO indexes for BMDs of Army Chaplains Returns for Stations Abroad Just check with your local genealogical Society, or Latter Day Saints. Births of Children:- Index to certified copies of registers of births (officers, soldiers, & their families) from chaplains to the forces at stations abroad, 1796-1880. Aar - Jed (GRO no F540) - fiche 1 Jef - Wil (GRO no F541) - fiche 2 Wil - Zam (GRO no F542) fiche 3 Children are listed by name...the Regiment of the father, the country in which they were born, and the year of their birth, the Volume Number and page on the GRO Record.. Hi Georgina, The Rowlands family that we are researching at present starts with a William Rowlands of the Ceylon Rifle Regiment. A letter from the PRO of data taken from the Muster Books and Pay Lists of the CRR (W.O.12/10601-10626) indicates that he enlisted in Ceylon, on 1.4.1826 and was discharged on 31.7.1850. The other important information is that his place of birth was recorded as Colombo, there was no reference to his age, but he would have to have been born sometime after 1800. We are therefore trying to find the names of his parents who may have come with the East India Company or the British armed forces to Ceylon sometime after 1796. No luck to date. Regarding Gay's advice about BMDs of Army Chaplains Returns for Stations Abroad.......... At https://www.familyrelatives.org it says that it's possible to look for entries in these INDEXES (and other Indexes relating to Britons abroad). You need to subscribe but that's free. Many of the other searches and results are pay-per-view, but it says that these specific Indexes are free. However, there's a proviso as I can't get the images to open on my computer - but that may be because of my settings. If anyone else has success I'd be keen to know! regards Anne H.

Hello Julian, Sorry I should have said we're pretty sure William (BurnsThompson) McDonald-Davidson was born in Scotland, though we have no details. His wife Agnes (de Silva?) was Ceylon-born. We're pretty sure she was Sinhalese, but again sadly have no details. He was a tea planter (Dunbar Estate, Hatton). He died in Ceylon, but exactly where and when we don't know. Anyway, sorry we can't help you. Thank you everyone who replied with information.Having read your replies and visited the web links, I think its unrealistic to expect any specific information on my grandfather from these sources. But at least it confirms that he could have studied Engineering in Ceylon in the period 1893 to 1904.Thank you for your help.Julian _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself: design your homepage the way you want it with Live.com. http://www.live.com/getstarted
