Hi - I'm trying to find the ancestors of my GGGGrandMother, Amelia Sprigg Shriver. I would guess that one of her grandparents was a Sprigg. Do you have any connections? Hello List, I am not a Sprigg(s) researcher but I am very interested in the below mentioned man John Sprigg(s) who served in the Confederate States of America during the War Between the States. He was on trial along with my 4 GG Walter Cool of what is now Diana,Webster County West Virginia. Any further info on either would be much appreciated! Thanks, Sherri Brake-Recco, Ohio riverstx@sssnet.com JOHN S. SPRIGGS, CSA Apparently, John Sprigg(s) carried an alias of Harrison Rollins. Mention was made of this alter-ego in the Military Trial of Walter Cool and in the War Correspondence from the series "Making of America". JOHN S. SPRIGGS: Captain Co. B; born 1833; farmer in Braxton County, (W) VA (1860 Census). Physical description: 5'11", fair complexion; light hair, gray eyes; sandy whiskers. Prior service, Co. B, 3rd VSL. He was in service with a company of cavalry in late 1861, operating out of Braxton, Co., (W) VA, with the Moccasin Rangers. Cpd. Callaghan's (Braxton or Greenbrier Co., (W) VA), 05-15-1862, listed as being a "noted character" He has charged by the Union as being a bushwhacker, not in the regular service. He was to be hanged as Walter Cool was also sentenced. Gov. John Letcher intervened 05-27-1862, stating Spriggs was a regularly commissioned officer of the Virginia Forces. Much of Sprigg's confinements/release dates concurs with Walter Cool's. Spriggs was transferred to Camp Chase; Columbus, OH 05-30-1862. President Lincoln ordered an investigation of Sprigg's case 06-20-1862. He was confined at Johnson's Island and transferred to Vicksburg, Mississippi 11-22-1862. He was part of the prisoner exchange 12-08-1862 in Vicksburg. Spriggs enlisted at Greenbrier Co., (W) VA 03-09-1863 and appointed Captain. He was mentioned for "distinguished conduct" and gallantry by Col. W. L. Jackson. From there Spriggs commanded a detachment of the 19th VA Cav. He went AWOL 09-1864 and turned in his resignation. He then joined the independent command of A.B. Chewning (Tuning) and was wounded at the Dyer Farm incident up Gauley River 03-04-1865 when A.B. Chewning (Tuning) and Frederick Chewning (Tuning) were killed.
