    3. Hello Folks Rootsweb is going through some changes. New Equipment etc. They are experiencing some problems (see below) Please if you have any problems postiong or receiving any list mail Please be Patient they will get things sorted out In the meantime please keep checking the lists Archives. Rest assured our lists are still up and running and everyone is still subscribed. You can also keep up with what is going on at Rootsweb by going to their Homepage and scroll down to the FAQ site. Happy Hunting Shirley List Mom 1 MAIL LIST MIGRATION: 2006-08-21 Mail List Migration on Hold We have run into an email delivery problem that affects our AOL list subscribers. In order to minimize the effect on AOL subscribers, the update of mailing lists D-Z has been delayed until the problem can be resolved. We will post an announcement here and update the schedule when the AOL problems have been resolved and we can begin migrating again. Thank you for your patience. RootsWeb mail lists will be moved to the new Mailman software starting Thursday, August 17. The lists will be moved in small groups, alphabetically. An email went out to inform list users of the change. If you have any questions, a list has been created list-update@rootsweb.com for discussion of the updates and answering questions during the transition. To subscribe to the list, send an email with the word "subscribe" in the subject line to: List-Update-request@rootsweb.com If you would like to subscribe to the list digest, please send an email with the word "subscribe" in the subject line to: List-Update-D-request@rootsweb.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 AOL PROBLEM WITH LISTS9: 2006-08-21 Our mail lists have run into an AOL problem that significantly delays and/or deletes AOLer's list mail before it is delivered to their inbox. It also could cause some AOL subscribers to bounce and be unsubscribed from their list(s). This is happening primarily with the lists from lists9 which has most of the mailing lists that have been migrated to Mailman. We are doing everything we can to work with AOL to fix this. Users should make sure all list mail that gets directed to the spam folder is marked "This is not spam". They should also contact AOL directly about the delay and deletion of their list mail. We apologize for the inconvenience. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 DIGESTS IN MAILMAN: 2006-08-21 The default for digests in Mailman is plain text. If you prefer MIME and your ISP can handle that, email the admin to 'uncheck' the plain text button for your subscription. MIME is not recommended for AOLers. Email the admin at: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com where you replace LISTNAME with the actual name of the list. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11 Confused about the new registration?: 2006-07-06 The new registration is stage one of a process to integrate all of the programs you use at RootsWeb into one account. Although the My Account page lists all of the services you subscribe to, we have not yet fully integrated each service. For example, if you have one or more WorldConnect user codes, the 'edit' link in My Account will allow you to access the user edit page of each GEDCOM file you have included in WorldConnect. Mailing lists integration, however, has not been completed so although you can unsubscribe to a mailing list through My Account, you cannot yet change your email address for that mailing list through this new tool. When the new message boards are launched, logging in to RootsWeb will automatically log you into message boards. The old (current) message boards will not be included in My Account. We apologize for the confusion.

    1. LDS Digitizing Books, on-line NOW at BYU !!!
    2. Shirley Fergus
    3. A dream coming true. The Family History Library is starting to digitize their book holdings, mostly family histories to date, and they are putting them on-line, fully search able by any word or advanced search combinations. Five thousand plus of these books are on the Brigham Young University Library servers and readily accessible, NOW! Here is a partial clip of an announcement I just received and I have only made a quick check of how to find them and how to search, but it is very exciting "The LDS Family History Library has announced that it has begun the process of digitizing and making available on the Internet all of the Family History books in their collection. These are primarily books in the "929.273Series" that are currently housed on the first floor of the Family History Library (previously housed on the fourth floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building). At the present time (September 2005), about 5000 books have been digitized and are available, and they have announced that they are adding about 100 titles a week to the on-line collection. Copyright issues are playing a role in determining the order in which they progress through this task; books out of copyright are being done first." Go to the web site of the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU at http://www.lib.byu.edu/ , then on the home page, follow the links:Find Other Materials; Electronic; On Line Collections at BYU; Text Collections tab; Family History Archive from the list of collections that are displayed. The search box on the left seems to be he one to find your books at and the search box on the right is for searching within the pages on screen. Have Fun Searching Shirley Fergus List Mom

    3. Please view our website regarding the Johnson's Island Memorial project! (For those of you with Webster County and Braxton County WV/VA roots, WALTER COOL and JOHN S. SPRIGGS were POWs at Johnson Island prison.) http://johnsonsislandmemorial.homestead.com/Index.html This project is an official project of the Ohio Division of the Untied Daughters of the Confederacy. Our project is discussed at our website and you can also view photographs of the past Confederate Memorial Day services held at the Island near Sandusky Ohio. As many of you know, there has been ground penetrating radar and thermal imagery tests conducted at the Confederate cemetery on Johnson's Island in Ohio this past year. Many bodies have been discovered not previously marked with headstones. We feel that these men deserve to have a monument built and dedicated to them since they have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our Southern heritage. Plans are being made to erect 3 monuments, one for the Unknown Soldiers and 2 separate 6 foot high monuments with bronze name plates with accurate information of the men that we know have died there while imprisoned. Research was conducted this past year with members of our UDC and local SCV to verify our soldiers names and information. We plan to have a large Confederate Memorial day service in 2003 with the dedication of the new monuments. Funds are needed.....and this is where we need help! For a $ 25.00 donation, we will send you a gift of a period drawn map measuring 17" x 22". Only 1000 maps were designed for this project and they are hand numbered. Thanks for helping our Cause and for paying tribute to the newly discovered graves at the Confederate cemetery. 2. Frank Ross
    3. The wonderful two-volume work on the Crabb family by Richard Prall, 14104 Piedras Rd. NE, Albuquerqe, NM 87123, contains considerable information on the Sprigg/Spriggs families in the Maryland Colony in 1600s-1700, including Col Thos Sprigg Sr and Jr. An earlier inquiry gave a long quotation from Mr Prall's book, but the writer did not know what the book was. I am descended from Priscilla Sprigg, daughter of Thomas Sprigg. She was the mother of Edward Crabb. There is also a LOT of information on the Spriggs in the "LDS Family Search" website, if you're interested. 1. [SPRIGG] John Sprigg(s) of Virginia born 1833
    2. Sherri Brake-Recco
    3. Hello List, I am not a Sprigg(s) researcher but I am very interested in the below mentioned man John Sprigg(s) who served in the Confederate States of America during the War Between the States. He was on trial along with my 4 GG Walter Cool of what is now Diana,Webster County West Virginia. Any further info on either would be much appreciated! Thanks, Sherri Brake-Recco, Ohio riverstx@sssnet.com JOHN S. SPRIGGS, CSA Apparently, John Sprigg(s) carried an alias of Harrison Rollins. Mention was made of this alter-ego in the Military Trial of Walter Cool and in the War Correspondence from the series "Making of America". JOHN S. SPRIGGS: Captain Co. B; born 1833; farmer in Braxton County, (W) VA (1860 Census). Physical description: 5'11", fair complexion; light hair, gray eyes; sandy whiskers. Prior service, Co. B, 3rd VSL. He was in service with a company of cavalry in late 1861, operating out of Braxton, Co., (W) VA, with the Moccasin Rangers. Cpd. Callaghan's (Braxton or Greenbrier Co., (W) VA), 05-15-1862, listed as being a "noted character" He has charged by the Union as being a bushwhacker, not in the regular service. He was to be hanged as Walter Cool was also sentenced. Gov. John Letcher intervened 05-27-1862, stating Spriggs was a regularly commissioned officer of the Virginia Forces. Much of Sprigg's confinements/release dates concurs with Walter Cool's. Spriggs was transferred to Camp Chase; Columbus, OH 05-30-1862. President Lincoln ordered an investigation of Sprigg's case 06-20-1862. He was confined at Johnson's Island and transferred to Vicksburg, Mississippi 11-22-1862. He was part of the prisoner exchange 12-08-1862 in Vicksburg. Spriggs enlisted at Greenbrier Co., (W) VA 03-09-1863 and appointed Captain. He was mentioned for "distinguished conduct" and gallantry by Col. W. L. Jackson. From there Spriggs commanded a detachment of the 19th VA Cav. He went AWOL 09-1864 and turned in his resignation. He then joined the independent command of A.B. Chewning (Tuning) and was wounded at the Dyer Farm incident up Gauley River 03-04-1865 when A.B. Chewning (Tuning) and Frederick Chewning (Tuning) were killed.

    3. Hello, I am just beginning my search for my Sprigg ancestor. Here is the little I know about them. Mary Jane Sprigg married Alfred Cummins. She was the daughter of Colonel Frederick Sprigg of Scotland. I have no ideal where in Scotland the family resided. I would put their birth years in the 1700's as my grandfather that came to the states, was born in 1809 and these are his maternal grandmother's family. I could use some advice on the search for this family. Thank you for your time. Pat Spearman McAlester, OK 74501

    2. Christine metzner
    3. This is for all of you who have Martha Sprigg in their line. b. 1675 Calvrt Co., MD She was my 8th great grandmother. She married Thomas Prather my line is from their son Aaron Prather. Sorry to say I do not know what book the information was obtained from. Maybe some one else will know? I inherited the information when my grandmother died and it was passed on to me. It was written in 1985. " Thomas sprigg from Ketherland, Northhamptonshire, England; appeared in Northhampton Co., VA. 1650 and earlier; removed to Calvert Co., MD 1660/1; later received a grant of 1000 acres from Lord Baltimore in Prince George's Co., MD., which became "Northhampton", the ancestral seat of the Spriggs family; The Colonial mansion destroyed by fire on March 17, 1909 is described below. He was commissioner Calvert Co., 1661 (Virkus III, 663); high Sheriff, 1663/4; signed the submission to Parliament; married first in 1650 Katheryn_______ widow of Capt. Roper. He married second Eleanor Nuthall; served against Nanricoke Indians before 1678. Will made in Prince George's Co. MD 5-9-1704; proved 12-29-1704; names son Thomas to receive Kethering and Colington; daughter was Martha who married Thomas Prather and had heirs. "DESCRIPTION OF SPRIGG ESTATE, NORTHHAMPTON: (published in the Baltimore Sun previous to the destruction of the Manor house by fire on March 17, 1909)" "In Prince George's County, some six or seven miles inland from the grant steel highway, along which travelers between Annapolis and Washington are borne swiftly to their destination, there stands an old Manor House, encircled by a plantation of 800 acres. "Northhampton" was built by Thomas Sprigg, Colonist and Gentleman, from England, whose death occurred in 1704. A full length portrait of that worthy gentleman, still in the possession of descendants represents a handsome man in full Court Costume, while the archives of Maryland give abundant proof that the original was a gentleman of official distinction and social importance. The Manor House is a frame, about 125 feet front, and such portion as is of the original architecture, is put together without nails. The drawing room, library and dining rooms, all with high chimney places and wide open fireplaces, face the front and in the rear according to the fashion of 200 hundred years ago, are bedrooms with tall gothic windows, and other rooms now used as pantries. The place is well wooded and about the residence are Elm and Willow trees, also flowering Magnolia trees, White Fringe trees, trailing their delicate blossoms. There is a real lover's walk, winding between a hedge of old fashioned Lilacs, that being in clusters of purple and white send their fragrance through the early spring sunshine. Here was spent the youth of Governor Samuel Sprigg. Who became the heir of his uncle Osborne Sprigg and from him inherited "Northhampton". Here was brought in 1811 the Governor's bride and here was born in 1811 the Governor's little daughter, Sally whose baby helplessness was the safeguard of "Northhampton from destruction by the British, when the latter's troops advanced along the Patuxcent River to attack Washington. Governor Sprigg was in hiding at the time and the house was examined but owing to the young baby and its mother, the homestead escaped injury, or pillage beyond the seizure of Wines and provisions." I hope this history is helpful to someone.I am sending this to both the Prather and Sprigg list. Christine(Sullivan)Metzner Fullerton CA
