Author: mern62 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.sprague/1262.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Julie. My husband is directly descended from WB Sprague. In fact, his father was also William Buell Sprague (and my husband is an Edward Everett Sprague). Your candelabra story is probably true as we have a cane given to the family by Martha's daughter. I feel like I've told you this already but I can't see it in this thread (so forgive me if I've said this): the wood is meant to be from a tree at Mount Vernon, the metal from a piece of serving ware (I believe at Mt. Vernon), and on the top, it's adorned with the first dime (?) minted at the US mint. It was a gift from a grown woman to her old tutor. I'd LOVE to get a copy of the information you have and I'd be happy to send my address to you but I think these posts are publicly viewable (although I'm new to this site and don't absolutely know that). Is there a way to contact you privately? I'm also in CA. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My interest in Wm B. began, because of finding his picture in my mother's Sprague family treasures. Now, I'm not 100% sure that my Sprague daguerreotype looks like Wm. B! About 10 years ago, I received a great deal of information from Westminster Presbyterian Church, Albany, NY, about him, If you will give me your mailing address, I will be happy to share this information with you. One more mystery: we have a beautiful silver, antique, candelabra, that is "supposed" to have a connection with George Washington's wife, Martha. The fact that when Wm B, was a student at Yale, and he tutored Martha's sons, at her Woodlawn home, near Mt Vernon.....makes me wonder is this how our family obtained the candelabra??? I am really stretching this idea! I am anxious to hear more about your connection with Wm. B. Julie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: mern62 Surnames: Sprague Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.sprague/1262/mb.ashx Message Board Post: We have a chair that was, as family stories tell it, from Napoleon's exile on St. Helena. A Napoleon furniture expert has seen the chair and has agreed that it's likely from St. Helena. There is writing on a note lacquered onto to the back of the chair, which tells of the chair's provenance--but of course, half of it has been torn away. Since "Albany, New York" is plainly visible, and looking at the timing, we believe it might have belonged to William Buell Sprague (b. 1795)or one of his family members (passed on through the years to our family). Does anyone know anything about this chair or have the missing half of the writing? I have a photo if that helps. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If so, you are by birth a member of the Catamount Hill Association. www.catamounthillassociation.org The known Catamount SPRAGUEs include: Benjamin, Betsy, Jedediah, Jonathan, Lydia (BROWN), and Mary. Some of this family migrated to Spragueville, NY in the early 19th century. The Catamount Hill Association first met in 1875 after most of the residents of Catamount Hill had moved away. Their love of the Hill brought them back for a grand reunion, which was such a success it has been repeated every five years ever since. Today, the descendants of these 70 families still meet to celebrate our mutual heritage and to learn and share stories of our beloved Catamount Hill. Our next meeting is this August 7, 2010 at the Colrain Central School at 10am. People come from all over the country, some having attended for many years, some for the first time as they rediscover their roots. Information about the event is on our website. We are also gearing up to celebrate the bicentennial of the May 1812 flag-raising on the Hill in 2012. It is believed that this was the first time a US flag was raised over a schoolhouse. We are planning a weekend celebration in partnership with our sister organization, Mary Lyon Foundation, which owns the property where the monument is located. You can learn more about Mary Lyon at: www.mlef.org I have done extensive research on Catamount Hill and its 690 residents from 1763-1875. I have some more SPRAGUE information to share. I am eager to learn more about the family and would like to include more about them and the other 70 Catamount families on our website.
