Jessie married Arthur H. Williams (his 2nd marriage) in Lehigh, Iowa, 1890. Arthur died in Moline, Illinois, 1929 and Jessie died from complications due to a miscarriage in 1896. She is buried in Quincy, Illinois. Together they had 3 children, Edward E., Florence W., and Zola B. <---my great grandmother. Our notes show that Daniel's parents were Jonathan H. Sprague, born 1806 in New York and died 1882 in Iowa and Electa who was born 1811 in Canada and died 1890 in Iowa. They were married in Canada in 1834. They had 4 children: Daniel, James, Zenus, (born in Canada) and Julia (born in Wisconsin). Daniel was born 1835, in Canada and died 1912 in Iowa. Susan Appleton, (the daughter of John & Elizabeth) was born in Canada, 1846 and died 1917 in Illinois. Susan's parents did not approve of her marrying Daniel and so the two of them ran away together when she was only 13 years old and married in South Dakota, 1859. They had 5 children: Cora, Jessie, Blanche, Pearle, Birdie, Arthur. Daniel's traveling circus was called "Sprague's Colossal Circus." My great grandmother writes quite a bit about it in her diary about how Cora and Jessie traveled with their father in a fancy covered wagon to entertain audiences throughout the midwest. Jessie's act was to ride her horse bareback and Cora had a magic act, where she was suspended in the air by her father. The curator at Circus World gave us this copy of one of the actual posters for their show dated 1880. -E.M. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. We believe that Marian Sprague born about 1770 married Jacob Hogoboam. He went to Canada and built a home for his family and they were to join him. The family were crossing Lake Champlain in 1810 during the winter,(to get to the Quebec border) when the sleigh pulled by a team of horses went thru the ice. Marian and possibly two of her small children drowned. One of the survivers was Elizabeth Jane Hogoboam (born in New York about 1800) who married Solomon Liscomb and they lived in Ontario A David Sprague was named as Marian's father. Do not know if this is her father but hoping to find a connection. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The men killed were James Wright and Charles Colburn of Hazardsville, Conn., and James Sprague and Albert Bartlett, the later being new employees. The men were at work in the corning mill when the explosion occurred and the cause is not known. The bodies of three of the victims were blown to fragments and after the accident were scooped up into water buckets. The fourth victim, White, was found 300 feet away, alive but he could not recover. It is a remarkable fact that no fire among the buildings succeeded the explosion. Coroner Tarbell is ill and he deputized Deputy Sheriff Scougall to take charge of the case and collect the remains. Identification was almost impossible. All of the victims were married men. One of the latter intended to move his family to Schagticoke this week from their Connecticut home. The explosion caused a great amount of damage to windows in Valley Falls and Schagticoke and the shock was plainly felt in this city. A large tree near the powder mills was badly twisted by the force of the explosion and pieces of timber roofing and iron found refuge in the branches of other trees near by. The buildings destroyed were practically new, having replace those blown up May 10 of last year, at which time two employees were instantly killed. The plant will be built immediately. The monetary loss will be several thousand dollars. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. From a prominent Duxbury, Mass. shipbuilding dynasty, they built a fine Federal style house on Washington St. in Snug Harbor/Sprague's Neck area. They had no children, but adopted his nephew Seth Loring Sprague. The only grandchild, another Seth, was born in 1851 and unmarried as of 1915. Any information, esp. letters, diaries, etc., pertaining to the Spragues life in Duxbury would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.
