    3. According to the POLLARD Family Tree on Ancestry by "cpollard45" and others, Wilson Patrick SPRADLIN Sr was born 23 Feb 1917 Bedford Co, VA and died 18 Jan 2007 Lynchburg, Campbell Co, VA. He was the son of Thomas Matthew SPRADLIN & Mary LA(Y)NE. Thomas was born 16 Jul 1879 Bedford Co, VA, son of Alexander SPRADLIN & Permelia RAMSEY. Alexander was born 16 Jan 1845 Bedford, Bedford Co, VA and died 16 Nov 1917. He. was the son of Thomas SPRADLIN & Mary Margaret MEADOR, married 13 Jun 1820 Bedford Co, VA. Thomas was born Bedford, Bedford Co, VA, son of William SPRADLIN & Bathsheba HOLLAND, and so on back to Nicholas SPRACKLING, born Ramsgate, Kent, England. He was the son of Gulielmus (William) SPRACKLYN born 1460 Kent. Nicholas married Isabell OXENDEN in 1514. Her ancestry goes back to Richard OXENDEN & Isabell de WITHAM. Richard was born c. 1300 Nonington, Kent. Now, as with most family trees on Ancestry, no source references are given so one should treat the data with extreme caution. I think it is well established that SPRADLIN(G) is a corruption of SPRACKLING, which is attributed to the 17th C Virginian accent. However, whether these SPRACKLINGs derive from the family in East Kent is unproven as there appears to be no supporting documentary evidence that any of them emigrated to America. I have researched the Kent family extensively. The name is of Old Norse origin dating from the 8th and 9th C invasions and subsequent settlement of eastern and northern England by Scandinavian peoples. SPRACKLING derives from an old Norse nickname, "SPRAKALEGGE", adapted into Olde English as "SPRACALING", and translated literally as "creaking legs"; the nickname was presumably originally given to someone who suffered from osteoarthritis, or some other affliction that caused his joints to creak. It was in fact used for members of the Danish Royal Family as a nickname in the 10th and 11th C. The name is recorded as SPRACHELINGUS in 1130 and SPRAKELING in 1204 and is first recorded as a surname in the mid 12th C. Gervase SPRAKELING 1204 Pipe Rolls of Wiltshire and Robert ESPRAKELIN c. 1270 in the Book of Fees, Cornwall. Michael Sprackling Birkenhead, England

    3. I learned last week, that one of most favorite people in the world, died in October. When I was just starting with my obsession with genealogy, I stumbled into a correspondence with her. I can't remember just how we got connected to each other. I was living in Massachusetts, and she in Vinton, VA. Anyway, we corresponded by mail for about ten years. I even got to spend several hours with her, in her kitchen, on one of my trips to WV to visit my folks. The correspondence broke up when I retired from the Air Force, and had to find gainful employment, which I did, here in Calif. During our snail mail talks, we unraveled many cousin-cousin marriages in the descendants of John Spradlin, my ancestor. I'll never forget her, and her many kindnesses. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Louise Johnson Spradlin, 93, of Triple Hill Farm, Vinton, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006.
