    1. [SPENCER-UK] Matthew Spencer Norfolk.

    3. I would like to ask if anyone has any information on a Matthew Spencer born about 1770 (guess) who married Elizabeth Roake in Horsell Surrey 1797. They had 2 children baptised in Horsell (Elizabeth and Clemintina) before they moved to Kings Lynn Norfolk before 1803 when they baptised their son Matthew. Matthew senior was a <mailto:SPENCER-UK@rootsweb.comaster> master Gun maker in Kings Lynn firstly in Red Cow Street then High Street. In all probability from my research Matthew senior was born in Norfolk but trained in Surrey. There is no clues to age or where he came from on the marriage certificate. Matthew junior's first son was also baptised as Matthew suggesting that that name had some significance. There is a family of Spencers from the Methwold area that includes Matthews born 1715, 1735 and 1763. Matthew senior is obviously not one of these and I have all the marriages of this family. However the Matthew born 1735 had a brother Edward born 1742 who I cannot find any records for. Could he possibly be the father of Matthew senior above who married Elizabeth Roake. Matthew senior obviously trained as a Gun maker more than likely in Surrey. He was never an indentured apprentice although in Kings Lynn he did indenture at least three apprentices of his own. I have not been able to find if he received a Parish sponsored apprenticeship which would not involve a tax and therefore would not appear on the same records. Any help on the Matthew that married Elizabeth Roake in Horsell would be greatly appreciated. The 2 witnesses were John Roake, Elizabeth's' father and a George Greenfield who is recorded as a farmer and I have found his will and no Spencer is listed.. Keith Foster Queensland Australia

    1. [SPENCER-UK] Spencer's Hunslet, West Yorkshire
    2. vicki evans
    3. HII am trying to trace the Spencer Family mainly from Hunslet, West Yorkshire I have 2 queries at either end of my search My grandfather was Walter Henry Spencer b1908, Hunslet, parents James Spencer and Jane Johnson. On the 1911 census he is living at 51 CARR MOOR SIDE, HUNSLET, LEEDS, with his parents and a sister Winifred age 1 (this is the first we knew of this sister so assume she died in infancy, although I cannot find a registration for this). Walter had 2 younger brothers William b1913, Hunslet and James born 1917 and a much younger sister Irene b1928, Hunslet. There is also a birth registration for a Maud Spencer in 1914 mother maiden name Johnson so a possible sister. My first query is Walter Henry Spencer was supposedly brought up by his Uncle, Isaac Spencer, we were surprised that he was with his parents in 1911 at age 3. My dad knows very little of his fathers upbringing. In 1911, Isaac Spencer was living at 24 LAKE TERRACE HUNSLET LEEDS, with his wife Catherine, no children it seems. How do I find more information out from 1911 to about 1935? I did wonder if electrol roles would help, is this true? Going backwards, I have found this out (in brief): James Spencer (Walter's father mentioned above) was born in 1888, Hunslet, parents William Spencer and Elizabeth unknown. He had 4 brothers Walter b1878, William b1879, Arthur b1881, Isaac b1884 (possible 5th brother Albert), and 2 sisters Cecelia b1892, and Lucy b1895. William Spencer was born 1855, Methley Yorkshire to Thomas Spencer b1817, Holfenton, Dorset, and Esther Watson b1823, Ledstone, Yorkshire. He had 2 brothers John b1840, James b1844, and 5 sisters MaryAnn 1846, Martha b1848, Hannah b 1851, Lydia b1856 and Susannah b1859. Thomas Spencer's father is listed as John Spencer, a waterman on his marriage certificate. My 2nd query is can anyone help me work out who this John Spencer is, when he was born etc. Thomas Spencer appears to of been born in Dorset, Holfenton, which doesn't appear to exist (anymore), but according to his marriage banns, it says that both him and Esther are of the parish which was Yorkshire so a contradiction (1841 census gives the Dorset info, 1851 census lists Yorkshire as place of birth and by 1861 he seems to have died so there is a mistake somewhere and I don't know how to prove it!)> Many thanks for any help.Vicki _________________________________________________________________ http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/195013117/direct/01/

I thought I might try you folks to see if you could give me any suggestions as to where to inquire. My grandmother was a Spencer and from what we can find is that John Spencer, her grandfather, was born in 1802 to Jeremiah and Catherine Spncer in Holyhood,Flintshire County North Wales. In about 1832 he and his wife, Elizabeth Jones, emmigrated to North America. I say that because there is a discussion as to whether he landed in Brooklyn, New York or Brooklyn, Nova Scotia. (NY or NS) >From what I can see most of the vital records star around 1834 which is too late for me. Do you have any suggestions of a different source to determione his birth or his folks marriage around 1800. Thanks very much for any help you can offer. Karl West Walpole, Massachusetts USA

    3. In order that I may buy the right Marriage Certificate so as to determine parents names I thought I'd ask if anyone can help me decide who was the right spouse for Henry SPENCER, of Bonsall, Derbyshire (born abt. 1858)? According to the 1881 census Henry was living in Coventry Holy Trinity, Warwickshire, England. He seems to have moved to Walsall, and married there. All of his children were born in Walsall. His firstborn George SPENCER being born in 1884, his second born Mary A SPENCER in 1886. Others were May (1889), Fanny Eunice (1892) and Joseph (1897). There is an entry for a Henry SPENCER on page 236 of the Marriages Register for the July, August, September quarter of 1883: Spencer, Henry: Walsall 6b 934 When I look at the 6b 934 records I find four names: BROWN William Walsall 6b 934 EDGINGTON Mary Ann Walsall 6b 934 SPENCER Henry Walsall 6b 934 WHITEHOUSE Mary Ann Walsall 6b 934 So the possible spouses are both named Mary Ann! As is Henry's first daughter! Does anyone have any information about a Brown=Edgington, a Brown=Whitehouse, a Spencer=Edgington or a Spencer=Whitehouse marriage in 1883? Vic

    3. I am looking for a Henry Spencer who is a bit of a mystery, he was father to 2 children in 1915 and 1916, his name is on both birth certs. his occupation is listed as Commercial traveller Draper, he was never part of the family as they grew up only their mother Ellen Elizabeth (nee Scott) she was born in Scotland in 1879, we do know he had a brother, but not his name, he was a Bank Manager c1920`s, we have a piece of table linen with the mark ---W.H.Spencer 1874---woven on it. On the marriage certs. of both of the children one in 1939 & one 1940 he was listed as deceased and when one entered the civil service in 1948 he was again listed as deceased. Can`t find a marriage for Henry & Ellen anywhere so looking for him has been a long search, both of his children are still alive now in their 90th years and would like to find out about him and so would I as he was my grandfather. 3. Hi Trevor, Sorry not to contact you before - Christmas, visitors and illness rather got in the way! Wish I could help, but I only have one Spencer (so far) in my tree and she was a FRANCES SPENCER who married a GEORGE MARSHALL in Barrow on Trent, Derbyshire. I think it's too common a name to think they may have come from Yorkshire, but you never know. Two hundred years previously they MAY have!! I always keep hard copy of ANY emails, so if I find a connection in the future, I'll contact you again. All good wishes Mary (hope it's not TOO hot for your down under! When we were in Oz last April, up near Brisbane, it was hotter than usual and certainly too hot for ME!!
