Hello to all the Spence's out there. I am researching the Spence name in Georgia and in particular Isaac Spence. I believe he may be a descendent of the Spence's of Virginia and very possible the son of Moses Spence. My ancestry to Isaac is through his daughter Mary Ann who married in Thomas County, Ga on Apr 9, 1838 to Wilson David Butts. They moved to Walton County, Florida about 1851 - 52,Mary Ann was also known as Mediann. The earliest know record of Issac Spence was in Emmanuel County, Ga in 1820.At this time his age was listed as to 45. He is listed as having six children, all boy's. He next appears in Thomas County, Ga in the 1830 census. he is now listed as being age 40 - 50 and with nine children in his home. he appears next in the 1840 census of Thomas County only this time his name is listed as Spencer he has ten children now in his home. Isaac was married on Apr 4, 1839 to Hannah Taylor in Thomas County. it is not sure if this is his second marriage or perhaps a third or more. The 1850 census of Thomas County shows Isaac as being age 65 wit wife Hannah as 30, also listed was a son named Jackson and two females names unknown. In 1860 Isaac is still listed in the census records of Thomas County. he is now shown to be age 87, and being born in Ga. Wife Hannah age is 41 and there two females age 7 and 6 there names are Elvia Conner and Lucianda. The 1870 census list Isaac as being age 95 and born in Ga. Wife Hannah age 60 with a Elvinia and Lucinda ages 18 and 16. These two are probably grand daughters of Isaac. Children of Isaac that are known are Mary Ann born about 1822 and levi, Joshua, Tharp, Olive, Hannah, Isaac R; and Winfrey. It is of interest to note the name Joshua which seems to come up in earlier Spence families.
