I am just becoming familiar with my new computer and had this response completed when I pressed a strange button. Now I have to remember what I said. There is a Robert Spence who was transported to New Kent, VA in 1651. I don't know for certain, but I think that he may well have been the uncle of David Spence (1640-1679), who settled in Somerset, MD. I also think that this Robert is the ancestor of the Southampton Spences. If this turns out to be true--then that will show the connection between the Southampton Spences and the Pasquotank Spences. Another piece of evidence also points to this connection, and that lies with the Hunter family of the Isle of Wight. William Hunter settled there quite early. His son, Isaac, had a daughter named Elizabeth who married Phillip Perry. Phillip and Elizabeth were the parents of Jude Perry, wife of William Spence of Pasquotank. I have been researching the Hunter line and have found a number of Hunter/Spence marriages on the VA side. So, I think that I have something going. Now that I am home for a while, I intend to put my notes together. I should make some interesting connections.
