    3. Spence, Burwell, Co. G. Enlisted at Dugspur, VA. Spence, Isaiah, Co. G. Enlisted Richmond, VA. Died in Service, buried Atlanta, Resident of Floyd County. Spence, Jeremiah, Co. G. enlisted at Dugspur, b. 1 Oct. 1833-8 May 1901 from gravestone. ***Spence, John H. b. ca 1823, Co. G, enlisted at Dugspur 9-16-1861, seems to have died 1862. Spence, Johnson M. Co. G, enlisted at Dugspur, "Johnson Spence, mustered Co. G, 54th VA. 16 Sept 1861 at Dugspur. He reenlisted in the spring of 1862 and went with the regiment into TN. and northern GA. in the summer of 1863. He was captured in the course of the Atlanta Campaign on May 14, 1864, near Dalton GA. and was sent to prison camp at Camp Morton Indiana. He was there almost to the ned of the war, leaving March 14, 1865 having enlisted for service in the Union Army on the frontier in the Indian campaigns. He returned home after the war and married Mahala Turman." (notes from Essie Spence Goad) Spence, Joshua C. Co. G, enlisted at Dugspur, Spence, Silas, Co. G, enlisted Dugspur, "s/o Eli and Martha Jackson Spence was mustered into Co. G of the 54th by his cousin Capt. Jeremiah Spence at Rocky Gap. Silas had married Saah McGrady in 1861. He went with the to eastern TN. in the summer following his enlistment and was taken there by the Federals and sent to Louisville, KY. sometime later. He took the oath of allegiance in Louisville on Aug. 16, 1864, but I can find no record of his release. In 1870 his widow remarried James Leander Reece. Either Silas died in the war or not long after." Information from J. P. Alderman. **** According to some of John Perry Alderman's records, family 588 in Carroll 1860 Census, John H Spence, age 37, This was John Henry Spence, s/o Uriah Spence, John Henry married his cousin Susanna Elizabeth Spence after this census was taken, John Henry mustered Co. G, 54th Va. Infantry on 16 Sept. 1861, but I find no record of of his service with this company after Dec. 31, 1861 when the muster was taken. He died in the war, because a chancery suit was filed after the war to settle his estate. He may have died in 1862 while with the 54th, or he may have joined another company and died. He had one child which died in infancy and his widow did not long survive him." Family 490, Uriah Spence age 60. Mr. Alderman states, "Uriah Spence s/o Burwell and Rebecca Spence. Uriah was too old for the army but his only child, John Henry Spence died in the war."
