I was finally able to track down what exists of the estate file of my 4-great grandfather, Elisha Spence (1776-1835), whose second wife was Jane Bell. Elisha last appears on the 1830 Census for Davidson, TN. That same year, a cousin (however distant) by the name of Jordan or Jourdan Spence, settled in Madison County. I suspect that Elisha relocated to Madison by 1833. His youngest brother William Spence (who was born 1785 after his father's death) lived next to Elisha in Davidson County. By 1833 William relocated to Rutherford County to live with his son, Richard. William may have moved because Elisha moved to Madison, or vice versa. When Elisha Spence died in 1835 in Madison County, an Anderson Skillians signed his estate inventory. [Elisha's estate was very small]. Jane Bell Spence married a William Skillians shortly after Elisha's death; however, she was soon widowed once again for William died in February 1836. Jane took her Spence name back; after all, she had it for 25 years, and then she moved to Marshall County. I believe that she died there in 1842 because by 1843, both of her daughters married; one of them relocated to Missouri first and then married in May of 1843. While searching through records at the library yesterday afternoon, I found some (S)killian names on deeds in Anson County, NC. This is the same county where I am "chasing some Spencers around." A (S)killion Creek existed there as early as 1754; I found a deed referencing a Lenord Killion on Killion's Creek and on Killion's land. I also found a Jacob, John, Lenard and Margaret Killion all in Anson County. I think that these people may have been related to the Bells and/or the Spencers there. Elisha Spence's first wife was a Spencer. The Spencer name in Anson first appears in 1765 in the following deed: 10 Aug 1765 Joseph Attaway of Coolspring to John Spencer of same for 90 pounds proc. money, 200 A on Bupores fork of Little River. Witnessed by William Spencer. Recorded by Samuel Spencer. 20 Aug 1766 Benj. Vines & Elizabeth Vines to Joseph Spencer for 40 pounds, 100 acres west side of Little River on branch a mile from mouth, granted James Denison 15 Nov. 1753. Witnesses: John Jeffrey; John Spencer. 3 June 1769 John & Susanna Spencer of Anson to Wm. Harvey of Rowan for 100 pounds; land on Little River, granted by William Stone in 1757. Witnesses: Wm. Ward, James Resnall. [my note: Susanna may have been the person referenced in the deed dated 23 Oct 1750: "John Williams of Craven Co. SC to William Rodes a minor of same, for s5 proc. money, 300 ac, part of a tract of 400 A sold to Williams by Jasper King, opposite Phillip Hensons...should said William Rodes expire, land shall go to his four sisters: Martha, Anne, Susannah & Elizabeth. John Williams seal with John Kemp & Anthony Hutchins." A William Rhodes later appears in Greenville SC on a witness list with John Spencer.] 10 July 1771 John McCleval to John Spencer, deed proved by William Culpeper. same date: Thomas Presley to John Spencer; deed proved by John McCleval. 9 Oct 1771 Deed: David Dumas to John Spencer. 11 Oct 1771 Wilson/Wade deed; proved by John Spencer 17 Nov 1772 Daniel Spencer appears as a witness; proved in court 1774 11 Oct 1774 Andrew Preston to John Spencer; deed by Andrew Preston. 11 Oct 1774 John Spencer & wife to William Spencer, acknowledged. 11 Jan 1775 John Spencer to William Culpeper; by Daniel Culpeper 4 April 1775 John Spencer's inventory, not signed. 12 July 1775 Administration on estate of John Spencer, dec'd granted to Susanna Spencer; bondsmen, Thos. Wilson, Chas. Ray & Wm. Pickett 500 pds. Spartanburg Co. SC Deed Book B-431, June 12, 1777. Deed of Gift: Susanna Spencer of Anson County, NC, for love & affection to Jesse Spencer, all her estate for the condition that he keep her 3 youngest children and raise them as best he can. Witnesses: John McIlvaile, Griffin Hogan. Then in Burke County, NC: another John Spencer: 12 Sept 1779 (1778) 200 acres on Gunpowder forks & own improvement for complement; grant entered for John Spencer. 15 Oct 1778; Land on Gunpowder Creek transferred to John Spencer; 150 acres. 30 Nov 1778; more land transferred to John Spencer. Names appearing on a list of NC land grants for 1778: John Spencer John Spencer, Junior Lucas Hood Abednego Inman Ezekiel Inman And I am also looking at a Thomas Spencer family I found living in Caswell County NC in 1781, the year his will was filed. Wife: Elizabeth Children: John, Frances, Betty, Robert, Mary, Susanna, Benjamin. I think that John Spencer of Burke is probably the John Spencer referred to here. But, I am speculating. I still have a lot of work to do. If you know anything about the Skillians families, however, I would certainly be interested. Barbara --part0_916546381_boundary--
