Hi gang, I checked the chart for a Lucinda born 1831 and don't see her. That doesn't mean that she doesn't belong in this bunch ! Does anyone know of any families that migrated to Indiana ? I have got to get the Spence/McElyea book for background info. The Surry Co. NC line of Spence families I feel are mixed into our lines somewhere along the way. In any event they passed through SW VA on their migration. Carolyn
Norman, Where did your Jonathan Spence marry Elizabeth McClain ? I found a McClain family in Grauson Co. VA. Also this was interesting. James Anderson was the surety on the marriage bond for William McClain and Phebe Newman on 1/27/1807. They were married by Rev. George Quesenberry. James Anderson was the surety on many couples bonds. Norman, will you post the list of Jonathan's known children so we can look at their names ? ********* CD # 15 tree 2053 has Uriah Spence. Has anyone checked this one yet ? CD # 14 tree 3027 has Bluford Thorpe Spence ( Luanne's line ) Leggett, Kirkland, Donehower, Lott, Rima and Boyd families. Jean, will you spot check 1850 Tazewell census for a Duggins, Thomas & Sarah ? Sarah Spence married Tom Duggins in Grayson Co. 1839. I don't see them in Carroll Co. in 1850. Maybe they moved to Tazewell with the others ? Rev. John Cock married these 3 couples in this order. 9/19/1839 Stephen Spence & Sarah Useley (Woosley) 10/24/1839 John Thomas & Lucinda Puckett * this is Nancy Thomas Spence's son 11/02/1839 Thomas Duggins & Sarah Spence They were all married by publication. We know that John & Lucinda Thomas were in Tazewell, and we have found a stray Stephen Spence there too. Maybe Thomas & Sarah went along ! I found a Lucy Ann Spence who married Joseph Chandler on 10/9/1849. James Spence, surety. Rev. Nathaniel Thompson Sr.......I haven't found a place for Lucy Ann yet. If James is the one who married Nancy Watson 1830, Lucy Ann may be their daughter. Remember I said they married 1830 and the first known child, Uriah, wasn't born until 1835. Lucy Ann must have been above the age of consent because consent wasn't asked in the record. So she may have been born 1830-1834. I'm going to pencil her in as a child of James & Nancy (Watson) Spence. When I get time I'm going to post Burwell Spence's Will. That will cause some chat, I'm sure. Later, Carolyn
Hello I am looking for the parents of my Lucinda Spence born 15 apr 1831 who married 4 jun 1847 Crawford Co., IN to Jacob Crecelius. She d 11 aug 1892. I have no clues except that several of the name Cornwell settled just north in Orange Co., IN. And a family tradition that an ancestor was married to an Indian wife. Most settlers came from VA and NC to settle southern IN. Possible candidates for her father are James Spence, age 26-45 in 1820 Crawford Co., IN census who had 3 daus and a son under 10 yrs old.; Thomas Spence of 1830 Crawford census; John Spence of neighboring Harrison Co., IN. 1830 census; or James K. Spence in neighboring Washington Co., IN. 1830 census. I might mention that Lucinda is buried within a few miles of those other counties. Thanks for any insights. Hi gang, I see we have 3 new members already ! WELCOME..... Please write in and tell us who you are looking for ! We have a huge chart that we are mapping all the Spence families and we may already have who you are looking for on it. We had 14 original members from our old mailing list at Vaspence and you can look at our old postings there. We are shutting down the old VASPENCE list in about a week, but please feel free to go and look at our archives there, and let us know who you are looking for. WE ARE PROBABLY LOOKING FOR YOUR BRANCH........ My name is Carolyn Spence and I'm in Trinity, NC but we sprang from the Carroll County VA branch. Jim Carver, I got your maps in the mail yesterday. Thank you so much. One of them had the Rivers where one of our John Spence' s was living, so I got a good idea where he resided. I found out that Bedford and Franklin Co. both have Pioneer settlement maps and I sent off a check for Bedford's today. Those should be interesting. I have NC maps and they are great. It's nice to look at a map of 1760 and see your ancestor's little dot that represents his house ! I've been studying my books all day and will have a few things to report tomorrow. let's hear from the new members. Jump on in, we are informal here. After all we are finding out that we are all related ! Later, Carolyn
Hi gang, I found a marriage record on James Madison tonight as I reviewed my Carroll/Grayson marriage book by John Alderman. Page 147 states: James M. Spence age 22, born in Carroll, son of Mary, and Lucretia SUTPHIN, age 21,born in Carroll, daughter of Ketturia, David Sawyer, Surety. Married 4/27/1854 by James Thompson. So the James Spence in Tazewell marriages is probably the brother of William Spence who married Roseanna Kinder. James married Lucinda Kinder. They are in the Spence/Tuttle line. Thanks to Mary Anne for posting the Sutphin info, it jogged my memory ! Carolyn
Hi, I'm sending this to both lists because I'm not sure everyone is on the new list yet. Thanks for the census posting Jean. It seems we are dealing with 2 Jonathan's here. One born abt. 1812, a son of an Elizabeth who died in Pulaski Co. VA 1851. This Jonathan married Mary Holmes and several people are looking for him, although they don't belong to our group. I e-mailed 2 people about a year ago, and neither answered. The other Jonathan, Norm's Jonathan, was born about 1805-1808 in Bath Co. KY, which wasn't formed until 1811, so to my logic Jonathan was born in either Tazewell or Russell Co. VA ( because they are the 2 counties Bath was formed from ) and that puts Jonathan right in the middle of the other Spence families we are researching. From Norm's research Jonathan Thomas Spence married Elizabeth McClain on 12/28/1826 in KY. Jonathan had at least 2 brothers, names unknown, although one was born in 1795. Jonathan & Elizabeth had at least 2 children, Andrew Trumbo Spence and William Spence who married Phebe Peden. Andrew Spence married Eliza or Elizabeth and they had a son John Alexander Spence born in 1875. This family moved on to California very early. I think I will make copies of this chart with what I have added to the backside of it, and maybe mail everyone a copy who wants one. It looks like a puzzle and you can see where certain people could logically fit given DOB and family names and location. For instance several families were in Washington, Russell and Grayson area which would be the general area Norm's Jonathan could have came from. Tazewell also. That's why if we can find managerial districts and creek names, we can pinpoint where these families were. Keep in mind that the reason counties were created was because the settlers complained of having to go so far to the courthouse, so if someone was married in one county that doesn't mean that they resided in that county. So we are looking at the south west region in general. Take Eleanor Spence, daughter of Betsey, born abt. 1802. It's likely she had brothers and sisters, but so far we haven't identified them. Jonathan fits into that age group. Norm asked why they married older women ? I guess the selection was limited. They in this region often took Indian women for wives, but no marriage records exist. Commom law marriage was accepted to some extent among the mountain folks. Some women may have been Cherokee women and adopted a English name. I have found that to be true in several of my families. The Cherokee women were known to be very gentle and loving, good mothers and wives. ( Just don't make them angry ) :) Enough history lesson for today, Let's keep digging, hang in there Norm, Carolyn
Sheila, I will try to answer your question about Isham's family. Mary Anne can look over my shoulder and see if I make mistakes. I'm taking the information from Carroll Co. Heritage Vol. # 1 articles submitted by Essie Spence. Isham was born about 1792 and is believed to be the oldest child of Burwell Spence. His mother was Rebecca and her surname was probably Puckett. Mary Anne posted most of the info on Isham on an earlier posting, that can be read in the archived messages. Isham died 6/10/1852 in Carroll Co. and Nancy died 2/28/1859 also in Carroll. They had four KNOWN children. There may have been other children, possibly a William Spence, but no documentation has been found. Their first child is believed to be Eli Spence born 6/29/1816. Eli married in 1840 to Martha Ellen (Granny Pattie) Jackson, daughter of William Jackson & Jemima Burnette Jackson. Martha Ellen was born 11/12/1814 in NC. Eli died 2/26/1892 in Carroll and is buried in the Spence Cemetery, Dugspur, VA. Martha died 4/24/1908 in Pulaski Co. VA and is buried on land owned by her son, Isham Spence, Max Creek, Pulaski Co. VA. Eli & Martha had 9 children all born in Carroll Co. VA. Johnson Minter Spence b.1/17/1841 d. 7/24/1907 Pulaski, m. Mahala Turman had 11 children Silas Spence b. 1841-1843 m. Sarah McGrady. Silas enlisted in Confederate Army and was captured in 1864 and was sent to military prison in Louisville, KY. He took the Oath and was released but didn't return home . He returned home once before his father died. He said he had been living in California and supposedly returned there where he raised a family. Susannah Elizabeth b. 1844 m. John Henry Spence. J.H. Spence died in Civil War. They had one son Washington D. Spence. Susannah remarried Asa Reynolds, and had 6 more children. She died 7/18/1877 in Carroll. Isham Spence b. 4/19/1847. He married Mary Frances Mabry Branscome. He died 1/21/1933 in Pulaski Co. VA. He had 8 children. Paulina (Polly) Spence b. 1/18/1849. married William Press Mabry. She died in 1902 in Champaign Co, Ohio. They had 10 children. Eli Jackson Spence aka "Jack" was born 1851. He married 2/24/1870 in Floyd Co. VA to Sarah A. Akers. They had 4 children. Eli later married Mary (Polly) Bolt twice, 7/16/1879 and 12/23/1881 both in Carroll Co. They had 5 children. After Polly's death Eli married 9/28/1921 to Sarah Hazelwood Mason. Eli "Jack" died 1927 in Carroll Co. VA and is buried in the Spence-Quesinberry Cemetery, Dugspur, Carroll Co. VA. John Carroll Spence b. 1852. He married Julia Ann Turman and had 10 children. He married 2nd in 1918 to Rose O'Neal Branscome. Third marriage was 1929 to Charlotte Nester. He had no children from 2nd or 3rd marriages. He died 1933. Joseph T. Spence b. 1854 died before the 1870 census. Martha E. Spence b. 1857 died before the 1870 census. Sheila, back to your line, I'm taking the info from John Lowman of Radford, VA tree # 3939 on CD # 6 Family Tree Maker: Eli "Jack" Spence , had Ennis Lee Spence b. 9/16/1882 who married Dora Dalton and Vinetta Nester. Ennis died 1963. Ennis' brothers and sisters were: Calvin Spence, Alcora Spence, Emma Spence, and Ruth Spence. I don't have his half-siblings names, but they are probably on that CD # 6. Ennis had Kirby Spence ( who was my husband's 4th cousin ), Gracie Spence, Bessie Spence and Gussie Spence, your line, so Gussie was also my hubby's 4th cousin. Kirby was the only boy. One of Kirby's daughters married a optometrist and lives in Waynesboro, VA. Kirby's son James married my 1st cousin on the Burcham side. I hope that helps. Did I answer the questions you asked before I got carried away ? Let me know . Carolyn
