I've had my names in RSL since about 1990 when I subscribed to Roots-L when it was at Fargo ND. Karen was in charge of RSL even back then. I gotta put my pedigree on the web. I descend from the Spences of south GA. My ancestors in the Huxford volumes are in the advance subscribers lists in the back of Vol. 6 & 7. My ancestor John M. Spence is in Vol. 6 & Joshua in vol.5. Just looking at Vol. 5 & memory, Joshua Spence b.1800 is said to be a son of Moses & grandson of Tharp. I generally accept Tharp & exclude Moses from my lineage. There is an age contradiction from another book. Tharp is called Buford Thorpe Spence I believe & the line goes way back in VA. I can find my xerox of the Spence pages from the other book, but from your mention of Moses, I figure you are as knowledgeable as me or more so. I do not have my line documented, so I am not an expert & have nothing trustworthy. My line from John M. Spence down to me is on my web page: http://emcee.com/~green/Bras.html Major John M. Spence CSA married Fairiby Hargreaves. I can provide complete info on my lineage if we are kin & you want it. Do I have any Spence kin subscribed to the Spence list? Why is the list called SPENCE-BLUFORD? -- for descendants of Bluford Thorpe Spence? I usually sign in at the MacDuff tent at the games & give my Spence lineage. I need to buy a Spence tie. 2. James Carver
    3. Hi folks, Just got a "hunch" hopefully somebody will be able to help check out. JAMES SPENCE 1748-1793 m.: "Jane Bluford" d/o ????????? James Spence served briefly under a Col. Abraham Buford (Bluford?) during part of his Rev. War service time. Is it possible that he could have married Abraham's daughter???? Those who have resource material for SW VA. ...please spot-check your data for this ABRAHAM BUFORD....any data on him please share it with me. Carolyn......will you be able to get me a copy of the book: "The Man Who Moved Mountains" by Richard C. David??? Locations...I've identified most all the locations that ancestor James Spence 1748-1793 was at during his Rev. War service period except: "MIDDLEBROOK"...which I'm sure is somewhere in Virginia.....Help me find it! ( Camp Middlebrook) Based upon his records I'd guess that due to illnesses he suffered during the Rev. War is what lead James to an early death after the war. I'm slowly piecing together his war time activity...besides being a "foot" soldier (infantry) he also joined in with a little cannon shooting activity....bang...that's all for now. Later..... 2. Cousins , Jim, I think Luanne can help you on the Buford hunch. If she isn't still traveling, when she gets home maybe she has some input ? ( Where are you Luanne ? ) Marilyn also is in DAR and maybe can help ? Luanne knows of a Buford DAR line that is documented, however we can't find a JANE, but I think it's because JANE is a middle name ! I've seen instances where a soldier married his commanders daughter. It's a great avenue to pursue. I've seen the name BLUFORD in Mecklenburg Co. VA, and as many names, it could have been translated to another spelling. I'll get you a copy of the book. You'll love it ! Carolyn

    2. Cousins, I wanted to announce that I was contacted from someone who wants to set up our listing on Cyndi Howell's list and 3 other biggies. Isn't that great ? Every day I check the members and we pick up a couple more. Don't be shy. Jump on into the discussions ! I'm making the last call for a copy of "The Man Who Moved a Mountain " for those who want one. I've got you Jim. I'm going to Hillsville on Nov. 14th & 15th, and can pick up some copies, but I'll need to know how much cash to take, since the book store won't take checks from out of state or credit cards. I'm getting copies of our SPENCE chart ready to go also. When I get time I will work on our webpage at Rootsweb. They have notified me that they can save our messages 2 ways, interactive search, and threaded search, just as we had a E-groups. I did a study on the given names of the ladies for 3 generations of Spence families in Tazewell and Carroll. This gave me some interesting results. Since the men folk all seemed to have William, John and James, I discounted those. Spence/Bluford line Burwell Spence line Mary 8 8 Louisa 3 none Rebecca 2 4 Sarah 2 8 Rachel 2 2 Martha 4 4 Margaret 3 none Nancy none 4 If this is any indication of a naming pattern of older family members, it looks like the Bluford line favored Margaret and Louisa, while the Burwell line favored Nancy, Sarah and Rebecca. Looking at that information one could possibly sort out a family into one line or the other. The male name William was favored by the Bluford line 10 to 3. Joseph, however and Benjamin only appear in Burwell's families. At any rate, it gives us a clue. I have been reading various articles and books to get a better understanding of the region's history. Sara has a family tradition of Presbyterian Spence's and I came across this article on the Upper New River Valley website. QUOTE The churches of the Upper New River valley were key elements of 18th and 19th century society. The first settlers of the region were mainly Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Lutherans or Quakers when they arrived in Grayson County. There were some notable early attempts to establish churches of these denominations, however only the Quakers were successful in organizing a congregation which still functions in the area. The churches of the frontier assumed some functions normally associated with the court system and dealt with many offenses which might be considered misdemeanors, such as excessive drinking, back-biting, illegitimate children or indebtedness. Other church functions were related to preserving doctrinal orthodoxy. whether the free-will doctrine of the Methodist or Calvinistic predispositions of the Presbyterians and Baptists. The normally stoic Baptist and Presbyterians stood in marked contrast to the more emotional "shouting" Methodists. The Presbyterians, could not supply ministers to their efforts to establish churches in the Upper New River Valley and soon "died out", actually converted to become Baptists. Land records indicate that there was a Presbyterian church in what is now Carroll County by 1776 and another on Grassy Creek in either Ashe or Grayson County by 1773. The later church was pastored by Rev. John Black, but did not survive past the close of the Revolution. END QUOTE I found it interesting too that to the Primitive Baptists, it was an insult to call their ministers, Reverend. They were called Elders. The Clerks of Court referred to them as Rev. So and So. Maybe that's why they wouldn't turn in their lists of marriages in a timely manner ? :)) On the list of early ministers of the region, our personal favorites, John Cock, Nathaniel Thompson, George Quesenberry and William Thompson don't have an affiliation with a denomination listed. They attended and were clerks and Elders of the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, but weren't listed as primitive Baptist ministers. ( Verrrrrry interesting ! ) I try to learn something new everyday. I think I met my quota for today. Happy hunting, Carolyn

    1. Grundy, VA
    2. Cousins, I was looking through the Buchanan Co. VA website and found the following: County was established 1858 from Tazewell and Russell. A courthouse was planned on the lands of John Ratliff and Thomas Gillespie, described as: Slate Creek on branch of the Lavica Fork of the Sandy River to be called Grundy. So if you want to look at your atlas, you'll see the city of Grundy. This same description is on the Deeds for land that John Spence purchased beginning in 1849, although I'm not sure if the Lavica Fork and the Louisa Fork are the same location. I've seen it spelled Lovica also. Chow, Carolyn

    2. James Carver
    3. Hi Folks...me again. As for the locations I'm seeking involving James Spence's Rev. War military activity. I've discovered that most were in NY. The only ones in question now are: * Smiths Clove & * Camp Middlecreek This James Spence was involved in several serious battles there in NY...currently being researched now. It appears his final days were at Valley Forge during the nasty Winter Encampment...naturally we know he survived it. His records indicate several "terms" , meaning enlistment times...mostly for 1 month periods, but was drafted for the battles ...and one mention for the duration of the War....slightly confusing but now knowing where he was and what he was involved in I'd say he had little choice. 1. The Settlements & Will of Burwell Spence
    2. Below is the article on Burwell Spence from the book, " The Settlements, Carroll County 1765-1815 " by John Perry Alderman. BURWELL SPENCE According to his pension application, he believed that he was born in Bedford County in 1763 ( File # W 11528). It is not known who his parents were, but in 1871 he went into the army (drafted into the militia ) from Surry Co. NC. He was then about 18 years old. His first tour of duty was for 3 months, in the southern army under General Greene, in the course of which he took part in the Battle of Eutaw Springs, after which he was discharged Oct. 28, 1781. He then moved to Montgomery County, Virginia where in the spring of 1782 he went into the army a second time. The second tour of duty was also for 3 months and this time he was sent to western Virginia, across the Clinch River to Witten's Station; he was discharged June 1, 1782. His pension papers show that afterwards he moved to Ashe county NC where he lived for a time. His sojourn in Ashe county is difficult to pinpoint from the old Virginia records. He was not taxed in Montgomery in 1782, although he had been discharged from the army that summer. He does appear on the roster of Capt. James McDaniel's militia company in Montgomery, but that record is not dated. In 1788 his name appears on the Montgomery tax rolls, and that would seem to be the time that he returned from Ashe County. It appears from the old records that his wife was named Rebecca ( from his son Uriah's marriage record in 1854 in Carroll County), and there is a family tradition which says that she was Rebecca Puckett, which makes considerable sense, considering the family names and other evidence. Burwell's first land was on the headwaters of Big Reed Island, on a stream then called Pine Creek, near Crooked Oak; he bought the survey from David Reece and obtained the grant in 1802 (Grants, 48-461). He sold his land in 1805 (Grayson Deed Book 2-148 ) and there is a period of five years ( 1803-1808) when he is not found in the Grayson records. In 1818 he bought a smaller tract on Big Reed from Andrew Cock, and this he kept for ten years. Later he acquired another tract on Burk's Fork and moved to it, selling his Big Reed tract. In the years that passed, he and Rebecca had nine children; she died sometime in the 1820's ( she is not shown in the 1830 census), and he remarried Nancy Thomas in Grayson County on July 7, 1831. The writer has not been able to learn anything of Nancy, except that she survived him by several years and moved to Tazewell County after his death. In 1832 he applied for a pension, based on his service in the Revolution, and in 1843 he reapplied. He was awarded the pension ( $20.00 per year), but died in Carroll County on March 23, 1844 (Pension application). He left a Will, written in 1843 and probated in May of 1844 (Carroll Will Book 1-46). He devised his entire estate to his widow Nancy, to the exclusion of his nine children, but happily he named all nine children in the Will. His personal estate consisted of a variety of personal property which was appraised for a total of $ 20.12 (Carroll Will Book 1-42); in addition he had cash and notes in the amount of $41.31, including his pension check for the first part of 1844. His estate included some property in the hands of Allen Thomas who was probably a kinsman of the second wife. His widow Nancy was in Tazewell County in the 1850's where she applied for the widow's benefits and for a land warrant (Pension application). His children are apparently listed in his Will in the order of their birth: (1) Isham Spence, born about 1792, who is said to have married Nancy Redpath. (2) Drury Spence who was born about 1796 and is listed in both the 1850 Wythe and 1850 Patrick county census. (3) Uriah Spence, born about 1800, married first a girl named Sarah and then in 1854 remarried Susannah Marshall. (4) Joseph Spence, about whom little is known. (5) John Spence, who probably is the same person who married Mary Woosley in 1823. (6) James Spence, born about 1809, married Nancy Watson in Patrick county in 1830. (7) Elizabeth Spence. (8) Mary Spence. (9) Lewis Spence, who married Frances Brim in 1833 in Surry County, NC. Additional information on this family can be found in the Carroll chancery files. A suit (File # 121A) was brought in the 1870's under the style of Reynolds vs. Spence's Executor; Uriah Spence had a son John who died in the Civil War as a result of which Uriah inherited the son's land. After Uriah's death in 1871, a suit was filed among the Spence heirs to settle the estate and clear the title to the son's property. The Spence heirs remaining in Carroll County at that time had lost contact with their kinsmen who had moved away, and only the local Spences were named in the suit. There was a John Spence in old Grayson county , contemporary with Burwell; it is not known what the relationship was. John was taxed with land in 1782 but does not appear in the old Montgomery personal property tax records. A John Spence does appear in the Grayson county tax records from 1794 to 1803; he lived on Burk's Fork and the land entries in Grayson show that his land was near the junction of that stream and Big Reed at a place called Bobbitts Rock House (Grayson, entry A-118). John Spence sold his entry to Reuben Cock. END OF ARTICLE WILL OF BURWELL (BURRELL) SPENCE Carroll County Virginia Will- transcribed by Carolyn Spence April 1844 proved by one witness & cont. Testator, William Lindsey Clerk of Court Carroll County to wit: This day the undersigned Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid exhibited to William Jackson witness purporting to be the Last Will and Testament of Burwell Spence to which writing the said William Jackson is a subscribing witness but unable from age and infirmity to attend Court and the said William Jackson made oath before us that the said Burwell Spence the Testator acknowledged the said writing to be his Last Will and Testament and was at the time of sound mind and disposing mind and memory and that he William Jackson attested the same in the presence and at the request of the said Testator. Given under our hands and seals this 9th day of April 1844. John Stanley John Cock *********************************************** * the above Will has been the subject of question and study for years and 155 years later we are still trying to figure out the riddles. I was talking with a cousin via telephone last week when we discussed why Burwell was so concerned with the beds and kitchen furniture, and not the normal things that men devise to their family. The livestock and land owned was not itemized. Nancy was mentioned twice. In naming the children with the last name Spence, was he leaving open a loophole for other children to share in his estate. It is thought that Nancy Thomas never married prior to her marriage to Burwell, although she had children. One source says Nancy's children were all fathered by Burwell, prior to their marriage. The possibility is there that daughter Elizabeth never married, hence her maiden name and not a married name. We know that daughter Mary never married. Why out of 9 children was there not one of them that was dear to the heart of their father ? Why was John Cock, Burwell's Minister and friend, my loving brother ? Will we ever know ? Carolyn

    3. Hi Folks! I'm still researching JAMES SPENCE 1748-1793's military activity during the Rev. War which will really take some time. I NEED INPUT as to the following locations: *Smiths Clove & * Camp Middlebrook ....anyone have any idea where these locations are?????? So far I have briefly determined that this James Spence fought closely with Gen. George Washington's troops in lower NY / NJ/ PA and was involved in several nasty battles. By the time I research this we'll be able to get a better picture of his experience during his military service. (For those who care) Jim James F. 1. Charts
    2. Hi again, Just a quick note and I'll stop clogging up your mailboxes ! I am trying to devise a workable way to make copies of the BIG charts and get them into your hands, to make it easier to follow along in our discussions. I'm thinking of having them reduced to 11 X 17 and bound in a booklet form along with maps of the region and some articles out of magazines. This way maybe some of you can spot where a ancestor could logically have belonged in a certain family. Someone asked about a James Spence who had a daughter Nancy born abt. 1831, I think it was. There are 3 James Spences that we don't have info on that are the right age to have been her father. Since no info exists on these men, it indicates that they moved away ! I can't do this all by myself ! My brain is becoming fried ! I'll work on getting these things copied and into your hands ! Carolyn

    2. Hi gang, JIM... that is fascinating ! Good job ! Please keep us posted. Can anyone help Jim with those locations he asked about ? For those who missed Sandy's post on the LEE family, please go to the interactive search at rootsweb and read it. We are definitely heading in the Halifax, and Greenville county direction, just as Luanne's research indicates. What's more, I was studying John Lowman's tree 3939 on CD 6, and found some notes on some of the Spence's. He has received alot of info from Essie Spence Goad, a dear lady in Carroll County, about the family. One interesting note was that John stated that " A John Spence paid the tax for a Burwell Spence in 1787 in Henry County." That piece of info came to John from a genealogist at the Montgomery Co. Museum who located the item in one of her books. Remember we found the Wythe Co. tax list of 1792 that listed Bowell and 3 John Spence's ? MY THEORY IS THAT BURWELL WAS A SON OF JOHN SPENCE. Possibly the same JOHN & SARAH SPENCE, that I am trying to find. Carolyn

    1. Buffalo Mountain Lee Families
    2. Hello, Welcome to Sandy !!! Sandy I don't know what connection we have to your Lee's but I think our research is heading in the right direction. Our Burwell was also sometimes referred to as Burrell. Burwell lived on or near Buffalo Mountain and is buried there. This mountain is on the county line of Carroll, Patrick , Floyd and Wythe Counties of VA. I am going to copy a paragraph from the book. " The Man Who Moved a Mountain" by Richard C. Davids, based on the life of Robert Childress, a Presbyterian minister, who built the rock churches on the region. page 90 He explained about the Lees. During the Revolutionary War there was a lead mine on the Buffalo from which men fashioned their own bullets. The exact site has been lost, he said, but now and again when timber cutters would skid logs to a mill they'd find bits of lead ground into the bark of the logs. It was word of the mine that brought General Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee to Buffalo mountain, just after he bid good-bye to his friend and commander George Washington. He bought a major part of the Buffalo-some 6000 acres- only three years before he was called to deliver the eulogy before Congress upon the death of the President, when he used those long-remembered words: "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen." His two sons became joint owners of Buffalo Mountain. One was the beloved General Robert E. Lee. The other was his little-known brother Charles Carter Lee, who lived at the Buffalo for several years. End paragraph I have been meaning to mention to everyone who has not read this book, that you need to get a copy and read it. Not only those who are descended from Burwell Spence, but also the James & Jane Bluford Spence line, because it gives such a fascinating narrative on the way of life of the people of the region. When I introduced my future husband to my Grandmother Burcham in 1973, when she heard his last name of Spence, the first thing she said was, " He's not one of them Buffalo Mountain Spence's is he ? " I said no, because we didn't know at that time he was in fact descended from that line. Granmother said, " Good." My cousin who married a Spence was also asked the same question when she married in 1954. It seems the Buffalo was a place in the county that was feared by most folks. After reading the book, I understood why. Although some areas of the book I feel are too harsh, it is interesting reading to every researcher in helping you understand the traditions and speech patterns and way of life that still existed in my early years. The Scotch Irish had a speech pattern that I find myself lapsing into at times, because I was raised with Scotch Irish parents & grandparents. Ex; a toy is a play-purty. Saney Claws. Sallet for Salad. Fur is far. It is hit. I really have to watch myself. HA HA HA If anyone wants a copy of the book, I can get you one from the bookstore in Hillsville VA. It is sold locally in the region, and I don't know about other states. It costs $ 9.95 and for less than $2.00, I think I could get it mailed to you. I do heartily recommend it. Sandy, we are trying to find the link between the Bluford familly and the Burwell Spence family. The Lee family is an added incentive. They were all in the region at the same time, the given names are the same. It's just finding the link that we are pursuing. Thanks for joining in with us. We'll keep digging......................... Carolyn

    1. Re: SPENCE-BLUFORD-D Digest V98 #4
    2. Have just recently subscribed to this list. The BLUFORD name caught my eye, as it appears in my LEE family that is considered to have come from Virginia, supposedly Halifax County. My Robert Lee (1798-1884) had children named Burrell and Bluford. . .and he also had a brother named Burrell. Both brothers and their families were in Bledsoe Co., TN, with Robert moving to Bradley Co., TN about 1850. There was also another Burrell LEE who went on to Alabama ca. 1820's from Bledsoe County. . .I am uncertain as to the relationship between this Burrell and the brothers mentioned above. Referencing a posting that came through today, Burrell and Burwell may very well be the same name. If someone has documented connection with LEE's, I would appreciate correspondence. Sandy Pierce
