3. Hi Folks, Carolyn... No I haven't checked on location of Ft. Defiance but plan to do so shortly. In my notes I have: John Spence m.: 9 Feb. 1786 Augusta Co. to Isabel McCormick ...not married in Rockbridge, (data from Chalkley, Vol. 2 - pg.360) (but I know that Chalkey's work is not 100% correct...proof with William Spence m. Polly Anderson...Chalkley states 1793...actual marriage record is 1792.) To add general comments regarding "Colonial Soldiers" ...during this time period prior to the Rev. War there were many young men on their own...hungry & without shelter who joined local a local Militia simply as a means to survive...a place (fort) to eat & sleep....we also find this fact even during the Rev. War period...as I've mentioned before with Burwell Spence in his military activities...it was obviously this was how he was surviving the times...also why he moved around a lot. Our mystery man...Thomas Spence...may have floated many places serving time in different militia units , yes fighting Indians too, and could actually pop up anywhere...like NC. (Carolyn...keep me updated to Barbara's research, please.) ----------------------------- GENERAL PLEA FOR COURT DOCUMENTS Folks, many of you have read my "short stories" posted on this site (by Carolyn-thanks) regarding Rev. War Vet James Spence of Augusta Co., VA. ...and my Widow Martha (Spence) Cornwell plight for a CSA pension. Beside based upon general background research such work is taken from actual Court Documents and Gov't Records. Over the years I have written (many published) several bloodline heritage stories on many different family lines. (example: Sparks; Ogle; Ramey; Wheeler; Jayne; Carver; Roberts; Bailey; Wheeler; just to name a few...others pending: Hylton; Brown; Edwards.) I wish to also draft a "heritage story" on the SPENCE line. To speed me along I wish to request that anyone with actual Court Documents & Gov't Records ....Deed Records/Marriage records/ Court Order Entries/ Military Records/ etc. ... of the following family units to please share them with me. Seek data on: * JAMES & JANE (BLUFORD) SPENCE of Augusta Co., VA. & any/all children. * WILLIAM & MARY/POLLY (ANDERSON) SPENCE..& any / all children. * WILLIAM & JANE (TUTTLE) SPENCE & any / all children. Most of you should be aware of who these early Spence Ancestors are. >From the actual Court/Gov't documents one may find a wealth of useful info...but I seek the actual Documents. Anyone with "any" document are urged to please share them with me...they can be snail-mailed to the address listed below. Please help me speed up the process needed to draft a Heritage Story on this SPENCE line. Later.... Jim James F. 1. Thomas Spence, Colonial Soldier
2. Hi cousins, Item: Jim, Have you found where Fort Defiance was ???? #2. I've found a descendant from a sister of Isabella McCormick who married a John Spence on 2/6/1786 in Rockbridge county VA. Rockbridge formed from Augusta and Botetourt in 1778. Since we know that the Andersons were in the Ft. Defiance area, this John Spence may have also been in the same area, thereby making him a possible relative to our William Spence who married Mary Anderson. #3. Thomas Spence, Colonial Soldier. I wanted to clarify the term "Colonial Soldier" for those who do not know. Colonial Soldiers served well before the Revolution, primarily fighting against Indian attacks and uprisings. The soldiers of the Revolutionary era were known as Continential Soldiers, and sometimes the 2 terms are confused. When we say that Thomas Spence was a Colonial Soldier it means he served during the Colonial period which ended in 1775. A Colonial Soldier's life was a dangerous one to be sure, and many did indeed die during Indian attacks. If it is a fact that Thomas Spence was a Colonial Soldier that may explain why we can not find the proper documentation on him. He may have died young, and as was the custom, his children taken by relatives to raise, if his widow did not have the means to support the children, nor did she immediately remarry. The above scenario certainly explains the gaping holes in following Thomas' life. His widow may have also died before legislation was enacted to provide her a stipend for Thomas' services, thereby leaving no files for pension. It seems to me to be a logical explanantion for Burwell Spence's failure to name his parents in his own pension application. Also note that he said " he BELIEVED he was born in Bedford Co. VA, in 1763 ". Which statement was he unsure about ? Bedford County or 1763 ? Huh ????? I have to consider the fact that Thomas Spence may have also lived to a ripe old age. If so, he kept a low profile. It may turn out that one of the Thomas Spences' in Surry Co. NC was he. Let's keep our hopes up . #4. Hope everyone has seen Barbara's announcement regarding the Maryland line of Spences. That is wonderful. Looking forward to her book. She will be setting up the Spence surname board in GenConnect, so let's all be sure to post on that, and hopefully someday we can connect our Spences to the Maryland line. She is still working on a connection of Southampton Co. VA William Spence to the Maryland line. #5 We picked up a couple of new members over the weekend. Larry Spence has traced back to Brunswick Co. VA. His line may be out of Southampton county also byway of a son who never left the area. Let's hope so ! Also have Bette who descends this way: Burwell>Isom (Isham)> Nancy Spence who married Daniel Gardner. #6 I have been pursuing Keens and Baldwins and have been all over. I did find that there was a migration out of Surry/Wilkes Co. NC to Tazewell Co. VA between 1820 and 1830, which incidently is the same time frame our Spences showed up in Tazewell County VA. What I need is those with histories of Tazewell county to check on what could have been the reason all these people decided to go during that time period. Was there perhaps a iron mine, copper, gold mining, extremely cheap land prices, what ? What was the opportunity or industry they followed ? # 7. I just narrowly missed Dakota Holt again. She had posted queries in Surry Co. NC, but again her ISP has changed. She is on the same track we are, and it seems one step ahead. I'm curious how she descends from Burwell. Well, that is enough for now, Carolyn

1. Davidson Co. TN Peter Spence
2. Hi cousins, I wanted to post this in case anyone needs it, especially Barry D. In 1802, Peter Spence of Davidson Co. TN gave his deposition to the court in the case of William Ridge, Tory. This case began in Surry Co. NC and created havoc for years afterward. I won't go into all of it, but depositions were taken involving a murder trial, and Peter Spence of Davidson Co. TN gave his deposition, proving that he had lived in Surry Co. NC. before he removed to TN . " Captain Spence declares that the father of William Terrell Lewis Jr. was Major Lewis of Wilkes Co. NC." The Ridge case involved many residents of the Allen Settlement around the Allen Iron Mine in Surry Co. The settlement was also in Yadkin Co. NC for a time due to boundary changes. It was on the corner where Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties meet. Further information can be found here: William Ridge, Tory Happy New Year, Carolyn

I am just becoming familiar with my new computer and had this response completed when I pressed a strange button. Now I have to remember what I said. There is a Robert Spence who was transported to New Kent, VA in 1651. I don't know for certain, but I think that he may well have been the uncle of David Spence (1640-1679), who settled in Somerset, MD. I also think that this Robert is the ancestor of the Southampton Spences. If this turns out to be true--then that will show the connection between the Southampton Spences and the Pasquotank Spences. Another piece of evidence also points to this connection, and that lies with the Hunter family of the Isle of Wight. William Hunter settled there quite early. His son, Isaac, had a daughter named Elizabeth who married Phillip Perry. Phillip and Elizabeth were the parents of Jude Perry, wife of William Spence of Pasquotank. I have been researching the Hunter line and have found a number of Hunter/Spence marriages on the VA side. So, I think that I have something going. Now that I am home for a while, I intend to put my notes together. I should make some interesting connections. 1. Anderson Line
2. James Carver
3. Hi Folks....yes I'm still here. For those who might have an interest in the ANDERSON Line (William Spence m.1792 Augusta Co.VA. - Polly Anderson) ....I'm still working on it! Thus far...no success to an actual bloodline connection. There were two sets of related Anderson Lines which pioneered the Augusta Co., VA. area. I've been able to research and collect quite a bit of data on "these early Andersons" but as stated...still no actual connection ...yet. I'm also still working on the early PALMER line as well as the TUTTLE line.... (William Spence m.1818 Jane Tuttle ...Jane d/o: Abner Tuttle & Martha Palmer)... I've gathered only tid-bit data on the Palmer & Tuttle lines...they're so far back it's getting difficult...but I'm working on them too! I realize that most of you are sticking strickly to the Spence Line, which is good but these other lines (Anderson; Palmer; & Tuttle) are also part of Bloodline...thus they're important too. To help pin-point the Spence Line in Augusta Co., VA. we need to focus upon the area known as....FT. DEFIANCE ....the area where the Rev. William Wilson married William Spence (s/o: James & Jane (Bluford) Spence) on 26 May 1792 to his bride- Polly Anderson at the Augusta Stone Meeting House. I can't find any "Spences" in the early records for Augusta Co., VA. ...but they were there...just can't find more positive proof. ANYONE with Property Deed Records for Augusta Co., VA., before 1800 ...please share with me any Spence Deed info!!!!! ( Hi Carolyn...still working on the Thomas Spence of NC also...not much to say yet.) Later...seen very little activity here on the list...wake up out there!!!!!!!!! Jim James F. 1. On the chase
2. Hi Gang, Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas ! I'm awake and kicking. I've been pursuing the Keens and Baldwins, looking for any links to Spences. Nothing concrete yet. To add a word about Don's post of having lots of paper and still missing the link, I do sympathize. Betcha I have 10 reams of paper.... But, it's all in a days work if we want to get anywhere. For a bit of 'NEW" news, Barbara of the main SPENCE mailing list asked for info on William of Southampton Co, VA, and I answered her. When she gets back home, I await her reply. IT seems she found something. I also asked if Barbara was intending to set up a SPENCE GENCONNECT board on Rootsweb. I've offered to handle the duties, if Barbara doesn't want to. Most of you are familiar with the GENFORUM boards. GENCONNECT will be the same format, only hosted at Rootsweb. I wish ( although I know it will never happen) that everyone in the world would deal with Rootsweb. Then we would have everyone and everything all in one place, instead of having to search the web in forty kazillion places looking for our ancestors. Rootsweb developed the field of online genealogy and is the Grandaddy. There are no enforced fees to use Rootsweb, you can look at all their information any time you please. Donations are accepted to support the systems and start as small as twelve dollars a year for all that information. Please support them. I'm really happy to see the GENCONNECT system growing. With the surname helper search engine built in, you can find a name really easy, and most states and counties are converting their query boards over to GENCONNECT, or at least maintain a board. Everyone needs to check and see if your surnames have been set up on a board yet, and if not, maybe sponsor it yourself. Our dear cousin Jim has a pro researcher digging around in Surry Co. NC for those Spences, and we'll wait and see what turns up there, before we continue on the Surry treasure hunt. I'll be going there myself real soon, as soon as these ice storms pass. At least we had a "white Christmas" here !! ( Got one inch of snow on Christmas Eve) Until next time, Carolyn

1. Keen
2. Jean and all, Thanks for the reminder on Mathias Keen and Sally Spence, Jean ! I had forgotton about that ! What are the odds that this has some significant meaning ????? We'll need to check the other counties now for Keen families near the Spence families. Surfing for Mathias Keen's ancestry may lead us into some solid evidence. Along with Josiah Keen ( which is sometimes written Joseph) there was a Gilbert Keen, a Moses Keen, a Zenas BALDWIN and Edmond WOOD, who was in this Spence cluster in both locations. Looking at your Rand McNally in North Carolina locate Surry Co. directly below Hillsville, VA. Locate the county seat Dobson. Now North toward the VA line from Dobson and locate Low Gap, NC on the Ashe/Alleghany county line. That is the location of the group in deeds and grants . From Dobson again head south then over to the left to Elkin and Jonesville. That is the 2nd location of the cluster. This is a good distance between the two. At least 35 to 40 miles. I'll send a copy of the pioneer map to anyone interested. Let me know ! Carolyn
