    1. SPENCEs self introduction
    2. James W. Green III
    3. Fellow Bluford Spences, I subscribed & the L server added me & let me know via e-mail dated Wed, 6 Jan 1999 08:41 PST. As you may see, I have contradictions causing me concern about my descent from James SPENCE b. 1748 & wife Jane BLUFORD, which could disqualify me from this list. I have just finished putting my Spence line (as I suppose it to be), at http://millennium.fortunecity.com/byker/362/ On that page, click on "21. SPENCE Pages". I will get it on my other web site (see my signature lines) when I find it back on-line. What are the urls of your Spence pages? My line is based on the 2 published sources (Boddie & Huxford) which I have shown in part on that page & those 2 sources contradict each other a bit. I have known this much for about 25 years & never gone looking for the documents to back it up & see what is correct. :-( Boddie lists the kids of Bluford Thorpe SPENCE Sr. & Charity SMITH but leaves out Joshua &/or Moses which I try claim based on Huxford. Does anyone have photocopies of the will or Bible of Bluford Thorpe SPENCE Sr. & Charity SMITH to verify what kids they had. Perhaps a deed could verify my line or perhaps my Joshua SPENCE is the son of someone else. Anyone know? >From my lineage on my web page you can see my line right down to me. Who all subscribed is descended from my Joshua SPENCE b. 1800? -- James W. 1. William Palmer
    2. James Carver
    3. Hi Folks.... Greetings from southern Ohio...snow & ice covered and a warm 20 degrees! Those who know about the PALMER line I'm working on....success is being made... William Palmer d. 1796 ...found his wife...her name was " JANE "...no surname yet...she passed on ca 1795.....got additional data on their kids..but not vital to the bloodline focus thus no worth commenting on at this time. That's all......for now....... Jim James F. Carver 610 Gay Street, Box 214 Portsmouth, Ohio 45662-0214 e-mail: heritage@zoomnet.net

    1. Ransom Spence
    2. Cousins, Susan: We are compiling a Spence chart and we found a Ransom Spence in the Tazewell VA census records. I estimated he was born in 1857. He was living in the household of Abner Spence & Phebe Gent Spence who married in Tazewell in 1847. Abner & Phebe's other children were: Narcissa ca.1847, Emerine ca. 1853, James ca. 1855, ( Ransom ca. 1857) and Thomas ca. 1864. Abner & Phebe were living next door to Joseph & Anne Spence. The census shows that Joseph & Anne had: Edward ca. 1825 who married Mary Noel, James born ca. 1827, and Bartlett ca. 1833 who married Sarah McReed. If Abner was indeed Joseph's son, Abner had already married and moved out before the 1850 census, and Abner's marriage date of 1847 bears (bares ?) witness to this. I think, and this is still in the theory stage, that Joseph Spence was the son of Burwell Spence of Carroll Co. VA. Burwell had a son Joseph who disappeared from the Grayson Co. VA tax lists in 1826 ( I think it was !) . Joseph was named in Burwell's Will in 1843/44. Burwell's widow ,2nd wife Nancy Thomas Spence, was living next door to Joseph & Anne Spence in Tazewell Co., after having moved there from Carroll Co. around 1850. So chance's are good that Joseph was the son of Burwell. The only doubt that I have left to investigate is the fact that the name Abner also appears in another Spence line, that being William Spence who married Jane Tuttle. Jane Tuttle was a daughter of an ABNER TUTTLE. We think we have all of William and Jane's children accounted for except one son born 1820-1823. We (or I) strongly think this missing son was Alexander Spence, born 1822 , who coincidence or not, moved to KY into some of the same counties that William & Jane's daughters migrated to along with their husbands. If anyone is actively researching the Tuttle line ( and I know Jim is ) possibly this Anne wife of Joseph, may have been a Tuttle daughter also. In that event, she had every reason to name a son Abner. ( That would solve this mystery, wouldn't it ? ) Susan: you are the only one who has a tie to Ransom so far. I hereby officially delegate you the "Official Ransom Spence Researcher" of our group !!! Here's the ball () Slam Dunk ! Maybe by comparing names of Rant's children etc. we can find a good connection. Don't you love ancestors with unusual names ? If he died in the 1900's, there should be a death certificate somewhere. You said Rant moved to Greenbrier Co. WV ? That's where my husband's Spence's went also about 1902 from Carroll Co. VA. They lived on the Greenbrier/Monroe County line in Glace and Hollywood WV. How about that ? My husband also descends from Burwell through his youngest son Lewis Spence. O.K. cousins.... Next posting, I'm going to work on that William who I hear through the grapevine went to Bath Co. KY from GA. This would be an answer to Norman's prayers... He has been waiting so long...... This involves all the Moses and Joshua Spence descendants too in GA. Ya'll need to jump in and discuss this line. I don't know much about the GA line. I just look at the chart and wonder ! 3. Hi Folks, This brief update is for those interested in the Spence - Bluford Line of Augusta Co., VA. Within this branch we have a William Spence m.1818 - Jane Tuttle ....Jane Tuttle - d/o: Abner Tuttle & Martha Palmer.... Thus the "Tuttle" & the "Palmer" lines are also bloodline relatives....I'm trying to find these folks to fill in the gaps. Some progress has been made...but not enough to go into detail yet. The PALMER line...Martha Palmer - d/o William Palmer ...appears to be QUAKERS from Bucks Co., PA. ...I'm currently digging into this now. Will let you know more as progress is made. >From a cold location in Southern Ohio...snow is in the air...Carolyn this causes problems...can't see those Buffalo chips on the ground until your feet slips upon them...ugh... 3. Hi Folks, Obviously I was having a bad day yesterday. I'm sorry but I must correct myself again.... FORT DEFIANCE & AUGUSTA STONE CHURCH is the one and the same location. (I was right the first time!!!!!...yes..I'm sure this time!!!! ) Folks, for those of you interested in the early Spences of Augusta Co., VA......a newly discovered Spence has been located. The character's name is WILLIAM SPENCE...his estate was inventoried in 1799 thus making it possible he might have been a "brother" to James Spence 1749-1793.......I'm wondering if this William Spence -d.1799 is the ORPHAN boy named William Spence who was bound out to Sampson Mathews on 21 May 1760????? there in Augusta Co., VA. ----- also found a GEORGE SPENCE in the Court Order records in 1760 ...another lost brother of James Spence 1749-1793????? Carolyn...when time permits...I'll be snail-mailing you something you might find of interest....it' shall be a surprise....no not a box of Buffalo chips....yes I know of such thing from past experience...use to do lots of primitive camping in the mountains...when one gets cold you'll burn anything. ( came home yesterday, windchill here in Southern Ohio was 15 degrees below 0 ...much better today, no windchill...and it's warmed up to 7 degrees ...I checked my pockets...all out of chips....craps!) 3. Cousins, I thought for sure someone on the list could help Susan out. She sent me the following message, and I couldn't find any info on Rant, but if he was in Tazewell, there must be a connection somewhere. I told her about the list. 2. Susan , We have a Ransom Spence in our mess of paperwork here in the Spence- Bluford group. He was born in 1857, a son of Abner Spence, living in Tazewell County. Maybe someone else has a marriage listing. Is this too early to be your Rant ? Carolyn Spence

    1. Reunion
    2. Cousins, I want to thank Shelia for all her hard work in getting this reunion arranged. Lord Willing, let's see if we can all get there ! Isom (Isham) Spence's line has been getting together for years. If we could ever get the entire families together, we would have to rent the entire park ! I also want to thank Jim and Alana for the "chuckles" as I was laughing out loud for the first time in a LONG time ! Talk about inbreeding ! When you get back far enough you'll find you are related to yourself so many ways, it's really depressing ! You start to wonder what was wrong with your ancestors, because they kept falling in love with themselves ! When I was young and my Grandmother used to show me all the OLD pictures, I looked, and I thought to myself, what was wrong with those hillbillies ? They never painted their house or mowed their grass.... They looked like a bunch of losers to me ! It wasn't until I was grown that I realized they DIDN'T have paint or lawnmowers, unless you counted the goats. Those pictures are precious to me now ! Now I understand more than when I was 8 or 9. I wish I had asked more questions. I used to wonder about my Grandma because whenever she had the chance, she would be out sweeping the yard. There was no grass in her backyard around the backporch door. I thought she was either nuts or simply couldn't find anything better to do with her time ! Again, a lack of lawnmowers made one do such things. Perfectly logical now. Alana, we have a new cousin Bette who is already in Vermont ! Absolum Spence.... That's a new one on me.... Does anyone have anything on him ? I really wonder about John Spence and Isabel McCormick too. I think that is probably the same John Spence who is named in a Rockbridge Co. VA Will of Ester Spence. She named several daughters, and a son John. She bequeathed her bedclothes to a Isabel. I've got that Will somewhere and will have to dig it out.I don't think it named Ester's husband, as he was probably already deceased. I need to check those dates. It was before 1800 as best I remember. Luanne, how are you ? Haven't heard from you lately.... Hope all is well.... For those in the GA line, have you checked out the webpage ? I agree with James Green, something doesn't add up in Joshua Spence being a son of Moses. I wonder if Huxford or someone hasn't confused Joshua with Bluford Thorpe Spence's son Joseph. Could they be the same person ? I have reserved web space at Rootsweb but can't utilize it yet. I'm in the middle of a computer purchase and trying to save what I do have before I start more stuff. You know how that is ? So, buffalo chips, Jim ? Are you speaking from experience ? Sounds like something I would do..... I have burned innnertubes for heat years ago. Lots of smoke.... You can't even buy coal around here anymore. I found plastic Diet Coke bottles, of which I have many, are good kindlin'. Don't last too long though ! Ya'll be careful out there ! Keep warm ! Carolyn

FORT DEFIANCE is the same location as the....OLD STONE CHURCH...not the old Augusta Stone Church were Wm.& Polly married. Location still the same...On US Rt. 11, about 5-8 miles outside of Stauton, VA heading North. Ft. Defiance is NOW the name of the small community around the Church. 3. Sheila (and the rest of the SPENCE cousins), Hi all, I'm so excited about he reunion. By the time August roles around we will have moved from Utah back to Vermont. I know it doesn't seem very close, but it's a lot more feasible to drive 15 hours than to drive 36. You've also picked a beautiful spot to have the reunion. My husband and I spent a couple of days of our honeymoon, including my birthday, at Hungry Mother park and I remember going there with my Dad when I was little. He grew up in Tazewell and lives in Northern Va now. I'm trying to talk him into coming with me. His grandmother is Nancy Margaret Spence, daughter of Van B.D. Spence and Delilah Burkett. Delilah is George Burkett and Jane Spence's daughter, so we're SPENCEs twice over (if you can brag about inbreeding <g>). Thanks for planning the reunion far enough in advance that I can look forward to it for months and actually make arrangement to be there! I'll be sure to bring the new SPENCE descendent who should be about 5 months old by then. Thanks for the good news. 3. Hi Folks... As clue to where our Spence Line was located there in Augusta Co., VA. lies with FT. Defiance..... Ft. Defiance was the military part of the old Augusta Stone Church ...church served both as a place of worship and as a military fort .... location where William Spence m. 1792 to Mary "Polly" Anderson. Ft. Defiance is locate on US 11 near the Rockingham County Line....got location on an old map but not sure what it were it would be on a current map...haven't looked but will. For missing Spences...I'm sure some must have slipped over into Rockingham County, VA. has anyone looked over there???? 2. Happy New Year Everyone, As Carolyn requested I am providing what I know about my William Spence. He had four sons that I know of Moses, Aaron my GGGgrandfather b.~1803, Jonathon and Thomas. William's wife was Mary but I didn't have a last name. Perhaps she is the Mary Anderson that James Green provided to me. My GGgrandfather was Moses b.~1830 and m. Jane Purvis ( or Pervis ) in March 1848. His son Allen was my Ggrandfather b. 1851 and m. Isabella Wheeler 1871. His son John Samuel b. 1876 was my grandfather and my father is Carl Raymond. Unfortunately I do not have documented proof beyond Allen, just bits and pieces I have put together. Perhaps someone on this list can confirm my suspicions. 2. Hi cousins, We have a new member Tom and this concerns Tom and others in Georgia. James Green has set up some webpages that you can check on the GA Spences. More info would be available from info that comes from the Huxford volumes which were the compiled research of a Mr. Huxford in Georgia who chroniciled the early GA pioneers. Hopefully copyrights can soon be released on those, so that it can be put on the web so people can find it. As I told James, I was ignorant about the Huxford volumes as I'm not in GA. Those of you from the GA lines, Moses and Bluford Thorpe Spence may find some great information there. Until then check out one of James' websites. http://www.Genealogy.Org/~green or http://millennium.fortunecity.com/byker/362/ click on " 21. SPENCE Pages I've asked Tom to post what he has on his ancestor William Spence who came to KY around 1800. I'm hoping either someone will know something for Tom, or even better Tom's William is the same elusive William so many of you have been chasing for so long ! Later, Carolyn
