Susan, I got your message. I'm patient ! My main purpose for your line is to get it documented as well as possible and then add a few generations to our Spence Chart. it would be most helpful if you just send an email to the entire group, so that those of us with charts can add your info to our charts. You can mail me a hard copy of it too by snail mail as I would love to have it. Then the hard part begins, catching up with the "Burwell News" and meeting all your cousins ! A WORD OF CAUTION TO EVERYONE ..... Rootsweb mail lists can not handle file attachments. When you try, they bounce, and I get a copy telling me to inform my list that attachments aren't allowed. This means that I can't transcribe Burwell's pension files and save them in a seperate file, then forward the file to the list. So I have to either type the thing twice, once for my own file, and again to send to the list. So, I'm debating whether to just send it to the Carroll County webpage, to be included in the USGenWeb files, or send it to each of you individually. When I did Burwell's Will, I sent it to Carroll County VA, and you can go to their webpage and make yourself a copy, if you want it. It also comes up in a search of USGenWeb on Spence, which is good ! I'm leaning toward giving the pension file to Carroll County also. You may include a URL from your bookmarks by dragging in a email to the group, but don't try to forward a entire webpage or anything, because it won't work properly once it gets to the group, if it does at all. So, there, I've done my "duty as a mailing list host " . Susan, the GA Spences tie in to the James Spence & Jane Bluford Spence line very early. James Spence was born about 1748 in VA, Burwell was born about 1763 in VA, and Moses Spence was born in VA about 1764 or so. Moses Spence went to Burke County GA, and raised his family there. James Spence had a son Bluford Thorpe Spence, who also moved to Burke Co. GA, and lived next door to Moses Spence, so we have a strong idea that Moses was related to Bluford Thorpe Spence, son of James & Jane, but we aren't quite sure how yet. They were close, that's for sure ! So that's why we are inviting descendants of Moses in GA to join in this group. I've been keeping notes on the Issac Spence family of Wake Co. NC also , because some of them moved to SC and some moved to the foothills of NC too. I try to make note of all the clusters of Spence families, except those "flatlanders" that belong to Barbara's list. 3 sons of David Spence of MD moved to the coastal areas of NC early and Barbara keeps track of them. She has tracked them all down, and we don't fit. She does however think that the VA Spence line was related to the MD line back in the 1600's. She's still working on that connection. but before we can jump into her line, we need to find out our line precisely. Barbara will be writing a SPENCE book someday. Carolyn
Hi gang, About the 2 George Spences: From that chart on the Bluford line that Claire compiled. there were 2 George Spences. One or both may have died in the Civil War era. The first one is on page # 2 of the New Spence chart, a son of William Spence and Jane Tuttle Spence. The chart indicates that George was born in 1825 and a ? indicates his death in CSA. On page # 3 of the chart see another George born 1823 and again ? and CSA. This George was a son of James Spence & Betsy Tuttle Spence. It looks as if these George's were 1st cousins. In fact double first cousins ! As to Washington Co, VA, Jane Spence, sister to the above William and James, married her husband George Burkett in 1821 in Washington Co. VA. John Mallon says that the George in his line ( James & Betsy Spence) from family notes died in Libby Prison in 1861 and was born in 1823 in Washington Co. VA. So it seems that we can add a death date to that George of 1861 on page # 3 of the chart. ( See, I told you that you would need white-out from time to time ! ) Now , as to the son of William & Jane on page 2, Mary Anne's posting of the service records indicates that this George was present on 6 /1862 and served until released as a POW on 6/21/1865. We don't have any descendants that we know of, so either he died, or never came back home, or we haven't been contacted by his desc. yet. If this George was in Elmira Prison Camp he possibly could have been there at the same time as his cousin Martha Spence Cornwell's husband Nathan Cornwell. Question for the guys who are Civil War buffs ..... Was Libby Prison in fact a prison for UNION officers ? If so, we have cousins, one Union, one Confederate. ****************************************************** Please be on the lookout for 2 people I am trying to locate that may belong in our group. Dakota Holt is researching Burwell Spence. Every time I find her, her e-mail address has been changed. There was a Spence girl in my line who married a Holt and I think Dakota descends from that line. Kathy Dietz asked me about a Johnson McKinley Spence who had a son named Sedrick in Pulaski Co VA. She didn't give me any dates, and I noticed that she had a webtv address. I deleted her message, checked my files, and typed her a message to give me some dates, and wouldn't you know I don't have her e- mail address. 2 webtv addresses I sent it to, came back. It was so simple, I thought. DIETZ at webtv.net, but NO, that's not her. So I tried another Dietzk and still not her. It was nice of those people to let me know I had the wrong addy. It was Dietz something at webtv. If you run across her, or she contacts you, please point me to her ! Carolyn
Hi all, James, I'll attempt to answer your questions. When I got this list from Rootsweb, they said they would notify the big 4 websites of our new list. I recall that Cyndi's List was one, but not the names of the other 3. To be honest I haven't had time to register it myself anywhere else. We went from 11 original subscribers to now over 35. The Spence list hosted by Barbara deals mainly with the Somerset Co. MD Spence family of David Spence of Old Somerset, and back overseas. We formed this group because we haven't gotton back far enough to know if we are in that Spence line or not. Maybe someday, we can connect. I of course subscribe to Barbara's list and many others do also. I browse her messages for anything on our Spences, but don't often see anything dealing with Virginia or the Southwest Virginia area, where our Spences took to the mountains and got lost ! If I do see anything, I forward it to this list. Your line has a beginning point in VA as Moses was supposedly born in VA before he went to GA. Please anyone, if you want to register this list, go ahead and let me know the URL and I'll get it registered. I think we have grown pretty good so far. I don't know where people find us, but they do. I periodically check the net for new people and find them also. Barbara's list has been going for over 3 years now, so there are lots of posts. I did a search on Burwell and only got 3 hits. 2 of those is how I found Mary Anne ! I don't remember if I did a Bluford search on their archives. Luanne and Sara found me on GenForum. I think Alana found me on the Roots index ? Jim Carver placed a query in the Carroll Co. VA Historical Society's newsletter and I answered. So we get connected. I've got my name in so many places on the net, it's hard not to stumble across me. Anyway, Rootsweb is setting up a GenForum type of board called GenConnect and Barbara will be hosting the Spence board on GenConnect. When she gets the board in place, we all need to post a brief query to that board, and then we will have all the Spence queries consolidated in one place. At least we are fortunate to know that we belong to either Burwell or the Bluford line. There are some of us that are close to the areas, but can't quite seem to make the connection yet. James, I belong to your Killian list ! Did you find me listed ? <g> I think that we can fulfill your Spence needs here on this list, and if I see anything that we all need to see on Barbara's list, I forward it to us all. One of our first subscribers joined our list looking for a Spence, that I recognized the name Lazarus as belonging to Barbara's line, so I sent her there.... She's happy ! Sorry, rambled on too long, but hoping I answered James questions and informed others who didn't know about Barbara's list. Carolyn
Carolyn, I haven't forgotten my research on Rant. Two cousins are helping me and it will be a couple of weeks before we have it together. It will be very lengthy. Do you want it e-mail or would hard copy mailed to you be better. Also, I found one of my uncles in Tocoa (I think), Georgia. His name is Everett. He is Rant's grandson and Tom's son. Tom is my grandfather. I keep seeing mail on the Georgia Spences and wonder how this all ties together. Looking forward to learning more about the internet and our family. Your cousin, Susan

Hi again, this is my last posting for tonight. I promise. I wanted to thank Bette for sending me the complete pension file on Burwell, all forty some pages. I have always relied on other transcriptions and what is printed in books on Burwell's pension applications. Right away I saw several things that made great sense. ALWAYS get the original source document if you can ! That is genealogy rule # ONE. In this case others transcriptions can and have been wrong. As I told Bette I had an envelope ready to go into the mail the very day she offered to send me these documents that she got from the National Archives. I'm sending her a CHART in gratitude and maybe a little surprise ! First, Burwell was uneducated. He could not sign his name. He signed with an X, so in these cases you always have to wonder, did they know what they signed ? Which leads me to question his Will, which in my personal opinion, is just a tad strange. Second, in Grayson court in 1832, they asked Burwell where he was born. He replied , " My parents tell me I was born in Bedford County." This little sentence tells me that Burwell had a set of parents ! He was not illegitimate. The word "tell" makes me wonder if his parents were still alive in 1832 ? He did NOT say "told" in the past tense, but in the present tense. When asked, when he was born, he replied that " he knows not." He thought himself to be 69 years old, which is where the 1763 birth year is coming from. Burwell did NOT say that he was born in 1763, he didn't know. If he knew the year, why wouldn't he have said so ? I'm working on transcribing these documents in addition to what Bette had already transcribed. I have poor copies in my records that I got a couple of years ago, that are copies of copies of copies and are really very poor quality. Already I have noticed several words that appear different between the originals and the copies. See why my plate is full ? Carolyn
Gang, Back to David Spence and Mary McElyea Spence: They had a son that the family couldn't agree on what his name was. He was born in North Carolina before 1790. Some of the family called him James. Some called him Joseph. Others thought his name was William. This son is thought to have died by 1840. Where ? unknown. It looks as if he left the family either in KY or TN when he was quite young and never returned to the family, so years later the descendants by 1885 couldn't be sure what his name was. In case you spot any similarities in the names of David & Mary McElyea Spence, they were: Thomas Phebe Mary aka Molly Daniel Dicie Martha Lydia Delilah John Lycurgas Sarah And what's his name ! Carolyn
Cousins, We are growing by leaps and bounds on this list. I wish I had good news to report on the GA line, but must admit, I'm still confused. I do agree that the GA line is related to the Bluford line. That much we all know. Let's re-examine James Spence's Revolutionary years. Those of you in the GA line will have to undertake this research because my plate is full. We only know of 3 sons, born ca. 1772, 1774, 1776. James was born in ca. 1748, so assuming he married around 20 years old, this would have been in 1768. You could expect a child born ca. 1769, and 1770. I don't have the dates of James' enlistment handy, but let's assume that there were no children born during his tour of duty. Although he had a leave or two, didn't he ? After leaving the service in what years could a child be expected ? Keep in mind Jane Bluford Spence's age .... This should open up some possibilities. Those with the Moses, Issac and Joshua lines, let us know the birthdates as near as can be known of those 3. Do they fit ? Regarding William Spence who showed up in Hickman Co. TN around 1800, was he definitely from Burke Co. GA ??? Carolyn
Gang, Now that the issue of James Madison Spence and George Spence who died in the Civil War has surfaced, I thought it a good time to remind everyone of the charts that have been compiled. I have the chart so I can easily see 2 Georges that are thought to have died in the War. It is so much easier to follow along with the discussions, when you can pull out the chart and see who we are looking at. It's a handy reference to have. I have some available for a book of stamps in return. Let me know if you want one. Perhaps you can spot something that everyone has overlooked. Carolyn
Gang, Sorry for not keeping in touch. I have been reviewing several things before I put my foot in my mouth again ! Just when you think everything fits, it pops out of place, and you have to start over. It looks like we need to re-examine James Madison Spence again since we have a book saying that he died in CSA. But I can't tackle that at this moment. At present, I've re-read the Fowler book looking for the TN and KY William Spences. I didn't find them there. I've also been reviewing the book for Thomas Spence of Surry Co. NC. The Fowler book does NOT state that Thomas Spence & Sarah Harriman Spence came to NC. I think they assume that because their David Spence was in Surry Co., that the Thomas was his relation. First, David married Mary McElyea in about 1783. He met her while retreating through Surry County after the battle of King's Mountain. However I don't see his PA unit involved in that battle. I followed the McElyea family and found that they obtained their land grant in 1787 and sold land in Caswell Co. NC in 1785. Mr. McElyea first appears on the state census of 1786 in Surry County. David acknowledged by his mark payment for his War services and all the dates are listed the last date being 10/31/1795 and this was in PA if I read the paragraph correctly. The more I delved into this Spence line the more convinced I am that this line hasn't anything in common with Burwell's line. For one reason, there are recorded Thomas and William Spences in old Rowan County NC, which became Surry Co. Thomas & William are both listed in the tax list of 1768 with Thomas Spence in Gideon Wright's District which was the Wilkes-Yadkin county areas. Daniel Boone first shows up on this tax list also. William Spence is in the present Guilford County NC area in Thomas Donnell's District. Thomas Spence is still listed in the 1771 and 1772 Surry Tax lists, and I checked several different sources on that. It is evident that there were one or more Thomas Spences in Surry/Wilkes county area a full 10 years before David Spence passed through with his Pennsylvania Unit and met Mary McElyea. So, therefore, in my opinion, these Thomas Spences of Surry County were not related to David Spence of PA. Barbara of the Spence list thinks that all Surry County Spences were related to David, and I thought so too, but now change my opinion entirely. I believe that Burwell's father and mother were in Surry Co. NC for a long time, and reading between the lines of Burwell's first pension application in Grayson Co VA in 1832, I think that Burwell had lived there quite a while also. He knew his way around the area pretty well. Number one on my priority list shall now be digging through Surry County to see what I can find. However Wilkes and Yadkin will have to be investigated also, because the corner of the Allen settlement was in the corner where these 3 counties meet. I think that our Thomas may have been the one nearest Low Gap, NC just beside the Ashe county line. If anyone has already researched these counties, please let me know so I don't duplicate your efforts. Carolyn

He died in the war, because a chancery suit was filed after the war to settle his estate. He may have died in 1862 while with the 54th, or he may have joined another company and died. Uriah was too old for the army but his only child, John Henry Spence died in the war."
Mary Anne and all, THANKS ! The notes on those 4 were new to me ! I would like to have more of the notes if you find time to post them. From looking at the chart, I see the Bluford line had 2 George Spences who died in CSA and both were born about the same time. Drury was probably Drury Spence's son. The John H. could be the John H. Spence son of Tire and America Spence. The John Henry Spence, son of Uriah Spence was born ca. 1823, 20 years earlier than this John H. The James Madison Spence that died must be the James Spence who married Lucinda Kinder. Both of these James Madison's were born ca. 1832, however we have Madison and Lucretia ( who married in Carroll County VA ) along with son Ira, alive and well in the 1870 census. Everything we can find will take us closer to putting these people in place. Thanks again, Carolyn
Hello Norma, For you and everyone else who needs information on searching the postings. Go here. <A HREF="http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl"> RootsWeb Mailing Lists -- Interactive Search</A> At the first screen type in SPENCE-BLUFORD or whatever list you want to search. the 2nd screen asks you for a search word. If you want for instance every message that listed Burwell, just type in Burwell. This search will work on any mail list, even if you don't belong. That's how I do most of my researching. Say I want to see if the Puckett list has any Spences, I go to the Puckett list, and do a search on Spence, or Rebecca, or Carroll, or Hillsville or Grayson, or whatever I think will bring me what I'm looking for. This way you don't have to belong to a list, you can just monitor it, as many do our group. Jim, thank you for the surprise ! It was pictures of the Old Stone Church in Augusta Co. VA ! Thanks also to everyone that I owe a THANK YOU and haven't gotton around to it yet ! Carolyn

Thankyou James Carver for the information you sent on the churches in Augusta County. My ancestor, James Gardner came to VA after the revolution. He was born in Fishkill, NY in 1756 and enlisted in the revolution from NY and NJ. I found that he was married to a Rachel Wilson first and then my ancestor Tabitha Martin second. I have Family Tree Maker and went thru the marriage indexes for VA. Finally found a James Gardner who married Rachel Wilson in 1789 in Augusta Co. Received a copy of the marriage license and it read that a John Gardner and a James Gardner posted a marriage bond and that it was John Gardner who married Rachel Wilson. So now I'm more confused than ever. Anyway on the license the witnesses were her father William Willson(How his name was signed) and a James Willson. I think maybe the fwas the minister of the Stone church from 1780-1810 as you said. I still have to clearify the marriage of James to Rachel, I will try to contact Willson's and Gardner's from Augusta Co. and see if anyone knows anything. Thanks again for the information you put in the newsletter about the Stone church. Bette Chayer Woodstock, VT

Looks like we have another branch of the Bluford line. With children named Thorpe and Bluford, they have got to fit in the puzzle somewhere, don't you think ???? Gloria, the difference in mail mode and digest is that in mail mode you get each message as it is posted. In the digest mode you get one message once a week, with all the week's messages in one e-mail. Either way, it's a great bargain ! I tried to do it myself, but I am not very computer literate, so I wasn't successful. What is the difference in mail and digest mode? Now about Isaac. there are a lot of Spence folks down in the Florida panhandle and in Texas that are related to Isaac. There were also a lot of Isaac Spences. Mary Ann Spence (a very popular Spence name) was my GG-Gram. She went by the name of Median and was born in Thomas Co. Ga. about 1824. She married David Butts and they moved to Walton Co. Fl. about 1850. My grandmother, Tabitha, was their first child and was born in Thomas Co. 1839. In the S/W part of Ga. there is a town named Spence and that was named for my Isaac. It was called Spence Community in the old days. Isaac named some of his children Thorpe, Bluford, Winford,Joshua, Jackson, Isaac R. etc. All good Spence names. It is the thought of most of the Spence family I have come in contact with that James and Jane Bluford were the parents of Isaac, but that is only theory. As I mentioned, there are quite a few folks from this line that are anxiously doing research and contacting. I may be the newest one on the block as I didn't know anything about my fathers family 4 years ago. I love this Spence family and look forward to being in contact with folks that are "really" looking. Isaac married Hannah Taylor (who might have been related to Zachary Taylor) but my GGG-grandmother, whoever she was, was his first wife. Gloria --part0_915941927_boundary--
Bette, I got the envelope today ! THANK YOU. THANK YOU ! I'm like a kid at Christmas ! I'm going to work on transcribing everything that you haven't. I picked some new info out of some of the descendancy reports that I didn't know. I started writing this as a personal note, and then got so carried away, I am sending it to the other cousins also. Maybe we can generate some discussion on some of this . I agree with you about the Puckett's. There was also a Drury Puckett in Russell Co. VA that I think was in this bunch somewhere. My best guess is that Rebecca was a daughter of Thomas Puckett and sister to John Puckett who married Martha. Speaking of Martha, some say she was a Spence and some say she was a Hensley. Here's the jest of it. A man in FL who descends from Martha, has a paper written by his great Aunt that said that Martha was born in 1771 in Bedford Co. VA and she was Burwell's younger sister. She married John Puckett in NC, probably as a 2nd husband. It is thought her full name was Martha Virginia Spence, or Virginia Martha Spence. I recently met a descendant of Lucy Spence McGrady, who has the family tradition that Lucy was Burwell's niece. Lucy's husband Mr. William McGrady did not die. He simply disappeared (abandoned ?) . Then Lucy came to Carroll Co in the 1830's. There were the 4 children that John P. Alderman knew about that he wrote about in the 1850 census. So anyway, the marriage license of Virginia McGrady, aka Janie, who married Isaac Mabry in 1848, lists her mother as Lucy Spence. Now this is still in the theory stage, but if Lucy Spence McGrady was Burwell's niece, and she named her daughter Virginia after her mother, maybe the mother was in fact Virginia Martha Spence Hensley Puckett.... Where John Alderman thought that Lucy Spence McGrady was Burwell's sister, he could have been mistaken in that Lucy was the daughter of Burwell's sister, not in fact Burwell's sister.... Lucy was born abt. 1790, which puts 27 years in between Burwell and Lucy. A reasonable range, BUT I think that Burwell was a younger child of his parents, not an older child. It is more reasonable to think, in my way of thinking that Lucy Spence McGrady came to Carroll Co. VA from Ashe Co. NC, not to be near her brother, but her MOTHER. As to why & when John & Martha Puckett came to Carroll Co., I think it was about the same time that Burwell & Rebecca came from Ashe Co., so that leads me to think that John Puckett and Rebecca were brother & sister. That's my best guess. Puckett is the hardest line I have ever tried to wade through ! Those of you working on it know what I mean. We have the line all around us, and our Pucketts are the ones that no mention is made of. ( Black sheeps ? ) They were in Grayson Co. VA just after it was established, and also at the bottom of the mountain in Surry and Ashe NC. but we can't find our place within the family. Which leads me to another question . If Rebecca Puckett Spence was a daughter of Thomas Puckett and Burwell Spence was a son of Thomas Spence, then why did they not name a son Thomas ? Or did they ? Seems I saw a Thomas Spence in the old Grayson census somewhere ? Thomas Puckett had a son Isom ( Isham) Puckett, and Thomas Puckett's father was Ishom Puckett. Perfect naming pattern there. Burwell and Rebecca's first known son was also Isham aka Isom, Ishom. Let me hear from the other cousins... IS YOUR Puckett research on this same idea ? This comes from my inquiring mind ( what little I still possess ) that Burwell had 2 daughters, Mary and Elizabeth. Let's hope one was named for Burwell's mother and one for Rebecca's mother. So which was which ? I thought that I had somewhere that Thomas Puckett's wife was named Elizabeth, but can't find it at this minute. If the above holds true, then Burwell's mother was a Mary. That's why this Thomas & Mary Green(e) Spence are so critical ! Where, oh where, are Thomas & Mary Spence ??? Until later, Carolyn
>From the Lexington Prebytery Heritage, pg. 208 - Chapter XI "Churches in Augusta County" ....: " the Stone Meeting House in Augusta", nine miles north of Stauton on U.S. highway 11, had it's beginning when JAMES ANDERSON formed in 1738 a Christian Society, called "The Triple Forks of the Shenando". The society encompassed the settlements on South, Middle, and North rivers between the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Mountains. John Craig, after supplying (?)in Virginia during the winter of 1739-1740, accepted from among several calls the one to a people later to become Augusta Stone and Tinkling Springs churches. This group continued as a unitied congregation until 1764 when he gave full time to Augusta Stone. During a meeting of Donegal Prebytery in Pennsylvania in 1740, Craig was ordained and installed with Robert Poage taking the vows for the Augusta Stone congregation. Messy Creek, Mt. Horeb, and Spring Hill churches were developed within the bounds of the congregation, and the church operated Bezetha Chapel at Burketown. According to an old letter, the congregation first worshipped in a log building adjacent to the old cemetery. The front part of the present structure, built 1747-1749 solely as a place of worship, is the oldest Presbyterian Church building in continuous use in Virginia. Tradition says the women carried sand on horseback for the mortar. The old sanctuary enlarged and Sunday school rooms added in 1922. The John Craig Fellowship Hall was dedicated in 1956. The membership declined to 92 in 1866, rose to 378 in 1916, and was 270 in 1970. ----------------------------------------- notes: ....The Rev. James Anderson who founded the Augusta Stone Church in 1738 was from Scotland, first settled in PA and was sent to Augusta (then territory of Orange Co., VA) to establish a base of worship for the pioneers. ....Rev. John Craig served as Pastor of the Augusta Stone church between 1740-1774. a six year gap lasted until : Rev. William Wilson became Pastor of Augusta Stone Church between 1780 - 1810. ****** it was Augusta Stone Church where the Rev. William Wilson married in 1792 ...: WILLIAM SPENCE & POLLY ANDERSON. --------------------------------------------------------------- FOR YOUR INFORMATION ........Jim James F.
