I was finally able to track down what exists of the estate file of my 4-great grandfather, Elisha Spence (1776-1835), whose second wife was Jane Bell. Elisha last appears on the 1830 Census for Davidson, TN. That same year, a cousin (however distant) by the name of Jordan or Jourdan Spence, settled in Madison County. I suspect that Elisha relocated to Madison by 1833. His youngest brother William Spence (who was born 1785 after his father's death) lived next to Elisha in Davidson County. By 1833 William relocated to Rutherford County to live with his son, Richard. William may have moved because Elisha moved to Madison, or vice versa. When Elisha Spence died in 1835 in Madison County, an Anderson Skillians signed his estate inventory. [Elisha's estate was very small]. Jane Bell Spence married a William Skillians shortly after Elisha's death; however, she was soon widowed once again for William died in February 1836. Jane took her Spence name back; after all, she had it for 25 years, and then she moved to Marshall County. I believe that she died there in 1842 because by 1843, both of her daughters married; one of them relocated to Missouri first and then married in May of 1843. While searching through records at the library yesterday afternoon, I found some (S)killian names on deeds in Anson County, NC. This is the same county where I am "chasing some Spencers around." A (S)killion Creek existed there as early as 1754; I found a deed referencing a Lenord Killion on Killion's Creek and on Killion's land. I also found a Jacob, John, Lenard and Margaret Killion all in Anson County. I think that these people may have been related to the Bells and/or the Spencers there. Elisha Spence's first wife was a Spencer. The Spencer name in Anson first appears in 1765 in the following deed: 10 Aug 1765 Joseph Attaway of Coolspring to John Spencer of same for 90 pounds proc. money, 200 A on Bupores fork of Little River. Witnessed by William Spencer. Recorded by Samuel Spencer. 20 Aug 1766 Benj. Vines & Elizabeth Vines to Joseph Spencer for 40 pounds, 100 acres west side of Little River on branch a mile from mouth, granted James Denison 15 Nov. 1753. Witnesses: John Jeffrey; John Spencer. 3 June 1769 John & Susanna Spencer of Anson to Wm. Harvey of Rowan for 100 pounds; land on Little River, granted by William Stone in 1757. Witnesses: Wm. Ward, James Resnall. [my note: Susanna may have been the person referenced in the deed dated 23 Oct 1750: "John Williams of Craven Co. SC to William Rodes a minor of same, for s5 proc. money, 300 ac, part of a tract of 400 A sold to Williams by Jasper King, opposite Phillip Hensons...should said William Rodes expire, land shall go to his four sisters: Martha, Anne, Susannah & Elizabeth. John Williams seal with John Kemp & Anthony Hutchins." A William Rhodes later appears in Greenville SC on a witness list with John Spencer.] 10 July 1771 John McCleval to John Spencer, deed proved by William Culpeper. same date: Thomas Presley to John Spencer; deed proved by John McCleval. 9 Oct 1771 Deed: David Dumas to John Spencer. 11 Oct 1771 Wilson/Wade deed; proved by John Spencer 17 Nov 1772 Daniel Spencer appears as a witness; proved in court 1774 11 Oct 1774 Andrew Preston to John Spencer; deed by Andrew Preston. 11 Oct 1774 John Spencer & wife to William Spencer, acknowledged. 11 Jan 1775 John Spencer to William Culpeper; by Daniel Culpeper 4 April 1775 John Spencer's inventory, not signed. 12 July 1775 Administration on estate of John Spencer, dec'd granted to Susanna Spencer; bondsmen, Thos. Wilson, Chas. Ray & Wm. Pickett 500 pds. Spartanburg Co. SC Deed Book B-431, June 12, 1777. Deed of Gift: Susanna Spencer of Anson County, NC, for love & affection to Jesse Spencer, all her estate for the condition that he keep her 3 youngest children and raise them as best he can. Witnesses: John McIlvaile, Griffin Hogan. Then in Burke County, NC: another John Spencer: 12 Sept 1779 (1778) 200 acres on Gunpowder forks & own improvement for complement; grant entered for John Spencer. 15 Oct 1778; Land on Gunpowder Creek transferred to John Spencer; 150 acres. 30 Nov 1778; more land transferred to John Spencer. Names appearing on a list of NC land grants for 1778: John Spencer John Spencer, Junior Lucas Hood Abednego Inman Ezekiel Inman And I am also looking at a Thomas Spencer family I found living in Caswell County NC in 1781, the year his will was filed. Wife: Elizabeth Children: John, Frances, Betty, Robert, Mary, Susanna, Benjamin. I think that John Spencer of Burke is probably the John Spencer referred to here. But, I am speculating. I still have a lot of work to do. If you know anything about the Skillians families, however, I would certainly be interested. Barbara --part0_916546381_boundary--
Gang, Thanks Tom for the direction. You're right, it is very unfriendly. Let's see how many times I forget to include it ! I'd leave aol but I've got so many things so many places I want to be found should anyone respond. You know ? Jeffery, I try to keep my eyes open for the SpenceR spelling, but I don't pursue it. Every Spence I have known will correct a person real fast when they put a R on their name ! We have that very problem with the transcriptions of the early tax lists. There was a Joseph Spence or Spencer in early Montgomery VA, that some transcribe as Spence and others Spencer, so the only way I will ever know is to get an actual copy of the tax list, in the tax collector's own hand. Even then, you can never be sure. So let me try out my signature line now. Catch everyone later... Carolyn.....you wanted a brief insight to the Civil War Prison....called: LIBBY PRISON. LIBBY PRISON was located in Richmond, VA ..the CSA converted the Libby & Son Ship Chandlers & Grocery warehouse into a prison strickly for the securing of POW Union "Officers". The structure was 150 x 100 feet, three stories, containing 8 rooms. Housed in these 8 rooms along with rats and disease were 1,200 Union prisoners. The living conditions were the pits, ranked only 2nd to Andersville as being the worst prison within the control of the Confederate government. Hope this enlightens you a tad about this wonderful vacation site...where many checked in but failed to check out. FOR OUR INFORMATION..... Jim James F. Too, I noticed the surname Freeman, and Bette is researching that also. Freeman, the ones I have came in with my Stoneman line. Quakers from NJ to NC to Grayson/Carroll area. Lesters, try Patrick County VA and Henry Co VA When researching Carroll Co VA, also check Floyd Co. VA and Surry & Alleghany Co of NC. It really is a big help. I have all my info in WFT but I think I'll put it down like you have done yours. It's much easier to refer to. I joined the Carroll County Genealogy Club and received my first Newsletter today. I think it's great. I really appreciate all your help and look forward to all the daily e-mails. Everyday is a new find and leads me off in a different direction. Could you please tell me what counties in NC I should be searching? I am not familiar enough with the names to know which ones are close to VA and specifically Carroll County. I am trying to find the Pagans, Freemans, Lesters and Burnetts. They are not in Carroll County in any census' I've searched (at least none that I can link to the ones I'm looking for) so I'm trying all the surrounding areas. Do you have any suggestions of other avenues I can take? Again, thanks for all your help! Jan --part0_916455089_boundary--
Hi cousins, My mailbox was full today and some messages didn't get to me. Hopefully by now, my box is clean and the messages come through. I signed on for 4 GenConnect boards on other families of mine, and had to subscribe to a managers list for that, and believe you me, I'm canceling my sub to that list ! It's incredible the volume ! To answer some of your topics: My computer is all but shot also, and I'm in the process of getting a new one. The problem is that I haven't decided whether to get a laptop or what. See, between my husband, son and I , we have 3 computers and all three are on their last leg. So we are thinking about getting a laptop for husband and I, to share and cleaning up my old one for a upgrade for son. We have so much stored and are afraid of losing tons of stuff like the last time in 1995. I haven't began work on my webpage at rootsweb and have been putting it off until I get this computer conversion over with. James G. is a super webmaster as he has great webpages already in place for the GA line, and I must admit that I'm a little scared of the whole thing. I think James' idea of putting signature lines on our posts is a good idea, but honestly I don't know where in AOL to accomplish this. I've looked several times. James, can you guide me in getting mine established ? I may need to call on you for help on the webpage also, if you will help me. The Spence Chart that we are working with began with Claire in VA, who charted out her Bluford line as far as she had it on a huge piece of paper. She mailed one to Luanne in San Antonio TX and Luanne, bless her heart traveled all over town trying to find a copy shop that had a printer large enough to copy it for me. She mailed me a copy and I realized that the chart was an ideal way of seeing who was connected to who without going into your computer. So, I copied the chart onto some 11 X 20 card stock and added Burwell's bunch, some unattached Spences, the GA line, and several families in TN, KY and I need to add some NC families. The result so far is a 25 or so page booklet. I reduce the cards to 8 X 11 and can then mail them to who ever desires the chart. I try to post corrections on the list, so those who have them can get out their liquid paper and fix things, or add people to it. I carry it to work with me in my briefcase and can pull it out and study it any time I get an idea or want to check to see how someone was related to another. Corny, old fashioned ? Yes, but it works for me . So that's what the Spence chart is..... Yes there will be a Spence board on GenConnect at Rootsweb. I only hope Barbara hasn't had as much trouble as I have getting mine up and going. Anything worthwhile takes time and persistance, so it will be great in time ! Mary Anne, that's great that Kathy Dietz or Deitz is in Burwell's line. Now I just have to find her again. Darn it, she asked so nicely if I would please respond to her message. I can't and I hope she hasn't lost hope. Normally I print every message but this particular day my printer was on the fritz ( as usual ) so I jotted down the addy, but must have written it wrong ! I'll do some searches on addys and see if I can locate her. Everyone please keep your eyes open for her name while you are surfing. Another brilliant idea ! Let's have a tug-o-war at the reunion between the Bluford Busters and the Burwell Bunch ! Winter recruitment People !!! Those of you unattached can be the referees ! Burwell's Bunch better get busy 'cause when we connect the GA line to the Bluford Busters, they will outnumber us !!! <grinning> Photographs: Jeffrey, that picture you sent me is GREAT !!! Do you know who the couple are ? The name says Jonathan H. Spence and Emma Jane Hunter Spence. I know the MD line married Hunters. When I get time ( if there is such a thing) I want Jeffrey to put all my ancestors pictures on a disc so I can preserve them. Jeffrey offers a great service and I encourage you all to look into this. Jeffrey, pass this to Larry please. Larry can you get into the genealogical research room at Danville VA sponsored by the Piedmont Gen. Soc.??? I hear that they have excellent records and books on the area of NC/VA line and Pittsylvania Co. VA. They are said to have one of the largest collections around and are highly recommended. If you can dig through Pitts., Greenville, and Brunswick Counties, maybe something will turn up in there. Alana, I don't know about the others as far as photos. I have none of the Spence family other than what Essie published in the Carroll Co. VA Heritage book. Bette sent me a picture of Nancy Spence and her husband Daniel Gardner, that Essie had sent to her years ago. I would love to find some ! I wonder what happened to them all ???? James G. , Yes I think you should divorce Thorpe and adopt Moses ! Even if you can't completely document the relationship, you have to go with what you can surmise. 2 +2 always equals 4...... If a square peg doesn't fit in a round hole, it simply won't fit. Put it where it will fit. There is nothing wrong in saying " It is thought by the available evidence". I like your map idea ! I don't know about Sebastian Spence. I have seen the name Irving Spence attached to cartoons on TV for years. Joe, let me chart out your line. That's Norman and Tom's line too. I think there is a definite connection there, it's just a matter of finding it. Enough for now, Carolyn Spencetop@aol.com
Spences, I thought maybe you all had said where the Spence chart is, so I have been going thru List emails that I have received since subing but failed to read. I do not see where it is. Is it on the web? Here are some recent mentions of the chart: From: SPENCETOP@aol.com Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 Susan: We are compiling a Spence chart ... I just look at the chart and wonder ! From: SPENCETOP@aol.com Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 The first one is on page # 2 of the New Spence chart Due to crashes, my email is chaotic so there may be other recent mentions. I just wanted you all to know I tried to answer my question before bothering you all. I will next try to use the search engine on old e-mail to learn more of this chart while I wait to hear from you all. What are the urls of your Spence web pages. You all can find my Spence Page on the web pages in my signature. Does this list have a Spence page? I gather the other Spence page is about to get pages at RootsWeb esp. a bulletin board. I've been working on my Spence pages today to try to divorce myself of Thorpe & adopt Moses. I am descended from Joshua Spence b.1800 GA. You all agree that I should trade out Thorpe & trade in Moses as Joshua's dad? That is what I think you all have said. Carolyn, thanks for the explanation of what each Spence list is for. Sounds like a good division. I think we need to put up maps on the web showing the Spence movements 1619-1800. -- James W. Spences, Is there any evidence that our Spences came from England vs. Scotland? I guess due to the time of arrival, 1619, that they came from England, but would rather they were Scot so we had a tartan, chief, territory, games, etc. -- James W. An answer to James Green. Spence (Spens) is a sept to Clan MacDuff. I am a member of the MacDuff Clan through the Spence name. They have several tartans that are very attractive. I first joined the clan at Grandfather's Mountain, Boone, N.C. in 1976. Although I moved to Vermont shortly after, I was asked to do the newsletter. Members sent me items and I typed it and sent it to another member, I think it was a Dr. Kilgore from a southern state. We started out with about 30 members at Grandfather's Mountain and now have about 300 or so. After doing the newslatter for 2 years, I resigned my post to a more involved person who lived in the south and was closer to other members. I still belong and have mer several other members. Clan MacDuff has a tent at the Quechee, Vermont highland games every August. Hold on until I find the address. The convener for the upper south (VA, Kentucky, Tenn, NC,SC is Eiler R. Cook 1021 Saddlebrook Dr. Hendersonville, NC 28739. There were alot of Spence families on the east coast of NC. Also, the genealogist Barbara Huff-Duff , 237 Madeline Dr., Monrovia, CA 91016--2431. (e-mail: huffduff@cco.caltech.edu) Membership is $15.00 per person or $20.00 per family per year. All those from the Spence family ought to join. It's Fun! Bette Chayer

This message made me think to ask if any one on the list has any photos of any of our common ancestors that they'd be willing to scan or make copies of. I have a wealth of photos from my mother's Lithuanian side of the family(they're on my website if anyone's curious), but none from my Dad's Southwest Va. family. Just a thought. To: Marc & Alana- I guess you're referring to the photo I sent to Carolyn of John & Emma Spence. Obviously I have a scanner, and even though I'm not a spence, I receive the posts because my Brother-in-law, is Larry Spence, and he's from Pittsylvania Co., Va. and has no connection to tthe internet at this time but thru me. I have done a lot of scanning of stuff for him, and I could scan all of your material ( don't deluge me and want it all zip zap) for a nominal fee, and get it to you via diskette or email. If you have a LOT of photos to be scanned, I will just scan them for 50 cents each. If you have a lot and want them cleaned up ( scratches removed, etc) then I can also do that for you, for an extra 5o cents per photo, unless it's a eally bad one, and then it will take more effort and I would charge accordingly. That photo I had sent Carolyn, for example, was cleaned up, scratches removed, etc. I can get rid of tear markings, old tape marks, etc. I am an artist, and generally do portraits in pastel, and I have restored many an old photo for people just so I could get an idea of how to accurately paint their portraits. I recently restored and then painted, from a photo 90 years old, a couple that was the only picture they had of their Great-Grandsparents. I am not trying to drum up any business for myself, I just wanted to respond to you and let you know what I could do. Blufords, Where is the Bluford-Spence list listed? I find the Spence list listed at John Fuller's http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html under "S", but not this Bluford-Spence list. How is the Spence list doing? Are there lots of posts there? I guess if this Bluford-Spence list is not listed on Fuller's site, our kin join the Spence list rather than this list. Do you all post to that list inviting our Blufords to join this list or do we all need to subscribe to both lists to find all our Spence kin. I don't think I could read 2 Spence lists. I can't keep up on this Spence list. But I am trying. I updated my web page to list both Spence lists. Is there more than 2 Spence lists? -- James W. Names that I have confirmed are: Bea Spence, Oral Wilson Brewer, Bessie Bowman (the wife of Ivan Spence), Laura Spence Hughes, Ralph Brewer, Walter Strong, Katherine Hughes Botner, Bertha Mae Spence, Daliah Hughes Scott, Ivan Spence, Sigbie Scott, Devany Spence and Jackie Strong. The photograph contains about 40 individuals, most of them un-identified. If the name, place and time ring a bell with you and you can help me identify others in the photo, give me a mailing address and I will send you a copy. Bea Spence (referenced above) is one of my double first cousins. Thanks and Best Wishes to all in the new year. J. O. Hughes Las Cruces, New Mexico --part0_916371679_boundary--
Hi again, Kenneth I got your message. Welcome to the group ! I'm counting on you and Gloria to send in your info on Isaac's line, so we can add it to the chart. Cousins, Issac had a son named Bluford ! So , he fits in this puzzle somewhere too. I don't deserve any thanks for what I am doing with this list. I enjoy helping people find their Spence line. That's my reward. I remember when I started, I collected everything on a Spence, and I saw Burwell Spence's Will in Carroll County VA, and I had a gut feeling right then, the first time I saw it, that this was the line we belonged to. My father-in-law was born in 1909 in WV and everyone said, oh you must have came from the NY line. It took me a year to wrestle a death certificate out of WVA on my father-in-law's father Albert. When I got it, I was overjoyed. Albert was born in Carroll Co. VA !!! I don't forget that elation ! Your hunches sometimes pay off.... And with a name like Bluford, it's really not too hard to get that feeling of being oh so close ! Kenneth, please e-mail some info to the group on Issac. DOB, DOD, childrens names and who the children married. Carolyn
