1. James Spence
2. James Carver
3. Goodmorning folks, Carolyn...as to your question regarding James Spence - s/o: James & Jane (Bluford) Spence of Augusta Co., VA. ...... I have no idea "what became of him" after 1790 but remember that his young, new bride: Jane Palmer died just after their marriage...thus they had NO children ...leaving him free to seek out new and interesting thing...Odds are that he remarried elsewhere and probably does have a bunch of rug-rats...we just don't know yet. .....I alway liked French Broads..... 1. FRENCH BROAD
2. Gang, Thank you Gloria for posting the excerpts from Chalkley's and on Isaac's line. I have charted Issac on 6-B for those keeping the chart. I would really like to see the document that page 404 of Chalkley's was excerpted from. I have asked before if any one has that document. JOHN, maybe you could see if you could locate it for us up in Richmond ???? I cracked up where it says that William Kilbreath has gone to the French Broad ! That certainly has a double meaning !! HA HA Seriously I want it to read the entire court case on the original document. I hate excerpts, as they are frequently wrong. Sometimes relying on excerpts will have you chasing your tail for years, when you could have interpreted the document better. The French Broad, for those who may not know, is a River that passes through TN, NC, and into SC. This may contain a clue as to those who migrated south, as waterways were followed early on. I'm curious about the case in general as to what Jane Bluford Spence said in her oath. Does anyone have this document, or any of the others ? I also want to thank BETTE for her posts on Clan McDuff. I have been thinking about ALANA's question about pictures. Would someone like to volunteer to be the photo carekeeper ? We could all send the pictures we have to the appointed person, and build a little collection and possibly JEFFERY could prepare them into some format to be shared ? This may be nothing, but, I'll throw it up for a jump ball. We have the James Spence born in 1776, son of James and Jane Bluford Spence, who married Jane Palmer and then we have no further info on him, do we ? Is it possible that he removed to the Holston and homesteaded there ? From my atlas the North Fork of the Holston River begins in Russell co. VA although it looks to be the same river as the Laurel Fork in Tazewell County. The South fork begins close to Marion VA and passes through Washington County. It passes just south of Bristol VA/TN and continues to north of Knoxville, TN. Just south of Knoxville, is that pesky FRENCH BROAD river.......... Later, Carolyn

1. to recap: THE BASICS
2. Cousins, Since we have several new members, I thought it a good time for a repeat of some basic things. This list is for descendants of James & Jane Bluford Spence of Augusta Co. VA and Burwell and Rebecca Spence of Carroll Co. VA. We invite any interested person who has reason to think that their elusive ancestor may have descended from either of these couples. We also invite anyone whose ancestor was in South West Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina, since access to these regions was gained by passing through SW Virginia. We also extend the invitation to descendants of Moses Spence, who was born in Virginia before moving to Georgia. So that we can maintain control of our objectives to center in Virginia research, I will again, as I have in the past, advise anyone who is new to researching the SPENCE surname to please check the archived messages on Barbara Beal's primary SPENCE list at Rootsweb. Barbara has years, if not decades, of Spence research behind her and is the utmost authority on the Spence surname. Her list is in it's 4th year of messages, and our list here at Spence-Bluford is only about 6 months old. Barbara is working on a book on the Spence name and has carried the line of David Spence of Somerset Maryland back into the 14th century. I always recommend to try Barbara's list first. Barbara can sometimes tell you exactly which branch a person belongs to, thereby saving years of wasted research effort. Please check the Spence archives at : RootsWeb Mailing Lists -- Interactive Search This address will work for any surname that has a list on Rootsweb, including our Spence-Bluford list. The Spence-Bluford list began with 5 ladies and has expanded to almost 40 people as of today. Our old list was located at : Vaspence You may want to view some of the old messages on the VASpence site, although be cautioned that some of the earlier research notes have been since corrected. Please feel free to ask us about an old issue that you may find. Lastly, since Rootsweb is totally free to researchers as we, and doesn't charge fees to view it's contents, please help Rootsweb with a donation. Also, when you transcribe documents that are in the public domain, please type them in text mode and contribute them to the USGenWeb project, most often to the county in which your ancestor lived. Since you traced your ancestor to that county, other researchers will find their way to the same county, thereby increasing your chances of meeting cousins and other interested persons of the surname. Any file contributed comes up in a GenWeb search, again increasing your chances of contact. If everyone would share their research efforts, great strides could be made. In closing, this list was and continues to be informal. We sometimes tell jokes and act quite silly to relieve the pressure of our research frustrations. We are one big family after all. We are happy to have you and hope you learn from our group ! Thanks, Carolyn Spence Listowner

1. Another assignment for the GA line
2. GA Cousins, I had a thought ! ( Watch out !) Some or all of you please go to the Augusta Co. VA genwebsite and link over to Chalkley's website on the early Pioneers of the Shenandoah Valley ( or something like that, I don't remember ) and see if you can find the article that listed the founding families of the Tinkling Springs Church. Jim, our Augusta Co. chairperson, is busy on another of his lines right now, and he has worked so hard getting us this far ! Let's give Jim a rest ! See if any of those families are also common surnames in GA, which may suggest a mass migration to GA from Augusta County VA. Has anyone checked Moses' Rev. War records ? Did he join in a VA regiment or was he already in GA before the War ? In other words, what do we have so far on him and his neighbors ? Later, Carolyn

1. Isaiah Spence, died CSA
2. Cousins, I want to make a notation on chart page # 17. This is the John & Keziah Spence family of Floyd and Carroll VA. John 's son Isaac had a son Isiah born 1838. I believe that this Isiah is the same Isiah from Floyd Co. VA that died in service in GA and is buried there. I'm going to put him as died in CSA, buried in GA. Anyone with contrary info, please let me know ! If you have an old chart and don't have page 17, let me know and I'll mail you one or post it. Carolyn

1. Isaac of GA
2. Gang, I haven't charted this line yet. As with Moses' group, I'm just the typist. We did hear from Kenneth the other day. Does anyone in that line have anything to add, before I post this up ? I have confusion on just how many kids this man had ! I have: Thorpe or Tharp Bluford or Bulford Winford or Winfrey Joshua Jackson Isaac R. Mary Ann ( which is Ken's line) Levi Olive Hannah and another girl Need some help, ya'll !! Carolyn

1. Moses Spence of GA
2. Gang, I want to add Moses of GA to the chart. Some of you have older charts and will have to chart this out, others have newer charts mailed in the past couple of days. this will be chart 6-A Moses Spence was born 1750-1764 somewhere in VA according to DAR records. He settled in GA after the war. His wife was Mary , surname unknown. Moses lived in Burke Co. GA next to Bluford Thorpe Spence, Sr., who was the son of James & Jane Bluford Spence. His known children are\were: Celia born ca. 1787 m. 1816 Abraham Eason died 1830 Mary b. ca. 1796 m. 1816 Benjamin Leggett Moses Jr.-- no other info at present A unknown female b. ca. 1805 Elizabeth b. ca. 1797 m. 1818 Henry Hilliard Joshua**** There is confusion about Joshua, but I think most agree that he was not Bluford's son, so we will chart him as Moses' son until (and if ) something contrary comes along. Joshua was born ca. 1793 m. 1824 Susan Middleton. He died 1875. Their children were: Mary Ann b. 1825 m. Jesse Carter Elizabeth b. 1827 m. James Carter Moses W. b. 1829 m. Susan McCall Susan b. 1832 m. Allen Howard John M. b. 1834 died 1904 m. Pheriba Hargraves, lived in Coffee Co. GA Emiline b. 1836 m. ? Cannon Olive b. 1838 m. George Eason Irene b. 1842 m. John Sapp William b. 1844- no further info at present **************************************************************** We may have to change some of these people around. I need for those of you descended from this line to post what you have, and see if all agree, or else I could appoint a subcommittee and let you all get it in agreement, then the chairperson can submit it to the group ??? hint, hint, hint, I have not studied this line, I do not know the area, I am just the typist on this one ! I need some help out there ! later, Carolyn

She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table and she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked her of children. Yes, she had quite a few -- the oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride, and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... the marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head and saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot" was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear, but she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. 1. more on Isaac of Ga
2. From all the census records of Isaac Spence of Emmanuel and Thomas Counties in Ga it appears that he was probably born between 1875 and 1885. Although he is shown as being born in Ga this could be incorrect. The name Blufrord or some form of it appears in Isaac's line. He could possibly have a son by that name. Other records of earlier Spence's. Deed abstracts of Montgomer Co, Ga 1. Moses Spence - 1812 2. Tharp Spence - 1803 Petitions to the Govenor of Georgia 1789 - 1793 1. John Spence 2. Moses Spence 3. 1. Georgia Spences
2. Hello to all the Spence's out there. I am researching the Spence name in Georgia and in particular Isaac Spence. I believe he may be a descendent of the Spence's of Virginia and very possible the son of Moses Spence. My ancestry to Isaac is through his daughter Mary Ann who married in Thomas County, Ga on Apr 9, 1838 to Wilson David Butts. They moved to Walton County, Florida about 1851 - 52,Mary Ann was also known as Mediann. The earliest know record of Issac Spence was in Emmanuel County, Ga in 1820.At this time his age was listed as to 45. He is listed as having six children, all boy's. He next appears in Thomas County, Ga in the 1830 census. he is now listed as being age 40 - 50 and with nine children in his home. he appears next in the 1840 census of Thomas County only this time his name is listed as Spencer he has ten children now in his home. Isaac was married on Apr 4, 1839 to Hannah Taylor in Thomas County. it is not sure if this is his second marriage or perhaps a third or more. The 1850 census of Thomas County shows Isaac as being age 65 wit wife Hannah as 30, also listed was a son named Jackson and two females names unknown. In 1860 Isaac is still listed in the census records of Thomas County. he is now shown to be age 87, and being born in Ga. Wife Hannah age is 41 and there two females age 7 and 6 there names are Elvia Conner and Lucianda. The 1870 census list Isaac as being age 95 and born in Ga. Wife Hannah age 60 with a Elvinia and Lucinda ages 18 and 16. These two are probably grand daughters of Isaac. Children of Isaac that are known are Mary Ann born about 1822 and levi, Joshua, Tharp, Olive, Hannah, Isaac R; and Winfrey. It is of interest to note the name Joshua which seems to come up in earlier Spence families.

Their children were: James born 1819 married Mahala Hale who was born in 1809 in TN Elizabeth b. ca. 1825 m. Thomas Jefferson Hale moved to Arkansas the MO John m. Tennesse Knight and they had 12 children. this info came from WSpence106@aol.com (non-member) William says: It is thought that Stephen was the son of a James Spence who homesteaded high on the Holston River and later owned land 6 miles east of Knoxville, TN.
