Park on Lake Hartwell now Travelers Rest Riverdale Road 1820-1838 Travelers Rest, located six miles east of Toccoa on Riverdale Road, has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. In 1784, when this section was ceded to Georgia, Jesse Walton, a Revolutionary soldier received over 10,000 acres of land on both sides of the Tugalo River (Now Lake Hartwell). On the land Jesse and his family built a two-room log cabin. The next owner was James Wyley who in 1820 built a four-room house on the property. In 1838, Wyley sold the house to Devereaux Jarrett, who enlarged it on the east side to its present size of twelve rooms. It became a well-known Old Post Road overnight stop. Before he died Deveraux Jarrett divided his many acres between his three sons: Thomas Patton, Robert and Charles Kennedy. His daughter, Sarah, married James Wallace Prather, owner of Riverside Plantation. Mary Jarrett White, thee first Georgia woman to ever cast a vote, lived in this house her entire lifetime. She was active in state and local politics. Charlotte Charlotte, E-mail:[email protected], ICQ #4446830 ***^--^*** When the going gets tought, the tought get going....
